  • I wanted to go over the changes I've made with my bmpcc 6k pro. Now using the smallrig cage I'm also able to balance better on the Crane 3s. In this video I go over the updates to my minimalist setup primarily designed for weddings and to be easily thrown on a gimbal. I also talk about my solution to a known issue when balancing the blackmagic 6k pro or pocket 6k on the Crane 3s Gimbal.

    I had the small rig cage because it was first, but I couldn't use the battery grip, which sucked. But it did have the built in SSD holder and that was rad, but when the tilta cage came out, I snagged that and that's the one that's stayed with. Having a cage plus the battery grip is money. And it looks badass.

    First off, the quality of this video... Damn man. A lot of people could learn from you. Amazingly well done! Definitely gunna check out more of your channel to see what else I can learn!
    I just picked up a BMPCC 6k Pro 5 days ago and have only had a chance to test it out a couple of times but overall I am beyond happy with the upgrade. Started out with canon rebel t5i, then swapped over to a canon m50 mark ii. Had a rig set up for that but it just was not delivering what I was looking for the most.
    So grabbed the 6k pro and damn... just need to pick up a cage real quick, and the rest of my rig can be transitioned over to the 6k cage as well. Gotta pickup a 1tb drive as well... The Cfast card that came with the camera is no where near enough storage at just over 200gb. Definitely looking to try out the battery solution you showed in this as well. The camera I bought came used with 5 batteries but having to stop constantly to swap batteries is a pain for sure. As for the gimbal issues... I have not tried it yet on my Ronin S but I am curious as to if it will have any issues.. Hm. I will test that tomorrow...

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  2 года назад +1

      Hey man thanks so much for the support and kind words. Welcome to the Blackmagic family. Definitely my favorite camera system hands down. 6k pro minimalist setup is king.
      I always say, buy CFast cards but they are more expensive. They are more reliable and faster loading when powering on the camera.
      As for gimbal, grab the DJI RS3. Hands down the best setup. Basically like a crane but soooo much lighter.

    • @antoniosamora9009
      @antoniosamora9009 2 года назад

      @@JustinPorterMedia Thanks man! I think this is my new favorite system as well. Honestly, it is taking even cheap canon ef-s lenses and turning out beautiful quality that the other cameras couldnt match.
      For the CFast cards, I had definitely looked into that. Strange that they would be more reliable and faster than mounting a T7 SSD onto the cage. I will look into getting some more of those cards eventually then! For now as a college student still starting out, the SSD will be more feasible haha.
      I will look into the RS3, thanks man!

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  2 года назад

      @@antoniosamora9009 oh shoot! FIRST, T7 don’t work! Only T5s work. The T7 doesn’t have constant read/write which will make the camera drop frames or stop recording. Gotta get the T5.
      But yes, I’ve had issues with my usb cable getting shorted out. T5s are very reliable. The best cables I’ve used were Kondor Blue.

    • @antoniosamora9009
      @antoniosamora9009 2 года назад

    I wish RUclips would have suggested me your video sooner. I have gonex through so many giamt rig builds that I was getting discouraged. So many people ruin the utility of this camera with massive rail rigs and v mount batteries. Your setup is exactly what I'm hoping for when I upgrade to the 6k pro.
    A couple questions if you're answering :
    1. Have you looked at the portkey focus handle? It takes the same batteries your ingenious solution uses and has a lot more functions than the tilta handle. Not sure if zoom is something you can control though.
    2. Do you ever find yourself as wanting the EVF?
    I've already qued up a number of your other videos that have interested me as part of a new production company myself and am still fairly new to the professional film world. Thank you!!!

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  3 года назад +1

      Same! I really wanted to keep the pocket as small as possible but efficient lol.
      To answer your questions, I’ve never heard of the port key handle. I’ll have to check into it. The tilta one works well and I already had a few nano motors to make it work lol.
      I’ve never wanted the Evf. I personally would find it more of a struggle to use it if I wasn’t on sticks.

    • @Sustainavore
      @Sustainavore 3 года назад

      @@JustinPorterMedia one thing that the portkey handle might help with as well is that it has a power out that can power the nano, so you wouldn't need to charge multiple kinds of batteries. At least I think so. I don't yet have it, but I it seems like it would be the easiest setup.

    • @JustinPorterMedia

Since then I really try to have as few extras as possible. The 6K Pro is quite convenient for that. I don't see that the Tilta plate installed upside-down lines up centerline with the SmallRig cage on the top because the cage uses the 1/4 20 slot right there to install to the camera... Did you do some something different or did you offset to the next row of 1/4 20 there?

    • @JustinPorterMedia
      @JustinPorterMedia  2 года назад

      Oh man I have no idea how I didn’t mention that. I used a “Unibit” to drill a new hole into the tilta plate. Super easy you just need the bit and a drill. I screwed the plate to a 2x4 and drilled a small hole so I can add another 1/4-20 screw. This way the plate doesn’t rotate.

      @aulcamedia 3 года назад

      @@JustinPorterMedia Thanks for that Justin. I've tried three cables so far, one too short, one drops frames, and the current one is longer than I need. A right angle connector is really required as the standard connector sticks out too far. I originally had my T5 in the slot at the bottom of the cage but the cable kept getting in the way of my left hand so I have moved it up and attached it to the side of the handle with rubber bands. Works ok, and without the smallrig cable clamp which is mostly a nuisance. I keep a Manfrotto plate on the bottom of the cage - I can rest this on my left hand and reach the focus ring with finger and thumb at the same time. The Kondor Blue cable should help tidy the rig up.

  • @bradpaulp

    Do you find the focus assist to be helpful? I have it turned on and at “high” but it never seems to properly outline people. It makes trees and buildings completely red but when focused on a person I assume it would color them red also. I just get an outline and so it’s hard to tell if they’re in focus or not. :/
