I believe this is the most beautiful song ever written. Makes me cry every time I hear it. He was such a beautiful story teller. His voice is so beautiful.
There are a few of us, at least. Surprisingly, after watching the fantastic Doctor Who episode about Vincent Van Gough, this song makes me cry even more.
One of the saddest, yet most beautiful songs ever written. In my top five for probably fifty years now. The lyrics…. “When no hope was left in sight on that starry, starry night, you took your life as lovers often do. But I could’ve told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” Breathtaking.
Vincent did see rings around everything he looked at, a symptom of acute lead poisoning, indicating a level of poisoning sufficient to cause brain damage. Thus, it seems likely that much if not all of Vincent's mental illness was also an affect of the lead poisoning. Ironically, the aberration of his visual perception, the bright rings around what he saw in day to day life, was also one of the most admired affects in his work. A sad life for our genius. His greatness went unrecognized in his lifetime, and he died poor and penniless and alone. Don's tribute to Vincent touches my heart. And Vincent lives on . . . .
I remember studying Van Gogh at high school and the teacher played this song while we were painting. He asked us why it made us sad and I said the line ‘this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you’ was crushing because those are the people we need more than anything in it. He gave me a smile and said ‘never forget that’. And I never did Mr.J! 💫❤💫
That's a great teacher! By asking you the question and letting you come to that conclusion, it resonates much more than if you are simply told something. Adding "never forget that" was a very powerful statement to you and others in that class.
Your silence/speechlessness immediately after the video ended, Salvo, was the ABSOLUTE perfect reaction. (Though, as always, I loved your particularly thoughtful comments, too.)
So many people think Vincent van Gogh was just 'the painter who cut off his ear' when in fact, he was so much more than that. He endured such a long struggle with mental illness yet was capable of such breathtaking beauty.
really...'so many people'...who thinks that? Most are very very familiar with this incredible renowed iconic artist and the struggles, pain and sorrows he sadly endured.
The beautiful song Killing Me Softly was written after Lori Leiberman heard him perform Empty Chairs. Beauty inspired beauty. Killing Me Softly came to fame with the amazing Roberta Flack recording, which I think you would enjoy.
@stevehackett2678 It was definitely Empty Chairs according to the writer. I met Don back in 1982. During a break, we were having a smoke, and I asked him about it since Killing Me Softly is a childhood favorite. He said that most people think it was it was American Pie because it was his best known aong.
So beautiful…such a sad life Vincent had, in life. They say the many rings of light he painted were a direct result of his psychotic episodes. He saw things that way. Enjoying your reactions!
My darling brother committed suicide a year ago March due to a terminal illness in which there was no hope. This song sends me right over the edge so I rarely listen to it. In Tom's obituary were the words 'This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.' I never thought a song that was written the year he was born would be such a magnificent tribute to (him) in death. Your reaction was perfect. That's why I watched. Your reactions are always so thoughtful.
Back in my high school days (1979), I was in art class and my teacher was showing us a slide show of Van Gogh paintings and she was playing this song to accompany the slides. I cried sitting there in my seat. My teacher took a personal interest in me after witnessing my emotional response.
This is an amazing tribute and to be able to paint with words Van Gogh's life and paintings is understated brilliance. One of those songs that holds your attention from beginning to end.
Don rereleased this song at age 78 in a collab with the a cappella group Home Free! He sounds just as good as he did then. The Home Free collab is beautiful and you should check it out! He also did a collab with them on American Pie during covid lockdown!
Like millions of artists, outcasts, and simply lonely people, I’ve always loved Vincent. If you haven’t read his life story, please do-just prepare your heart in advance
This is a really good example of the type of folk songs that were popular in the 60’s and early 70’s. Lyrics that are so deep with music that is so soothing and singable.
Home Free joined Don on this song 'Vincent' back in April of this year. It is gorgeous with the backing harmonies by Home Free & in the background of the video are Van Gogh paintings. Very clever ending. A must watch.
This song never fails to bring me to tears. I went to one of those immersive Van Gogh exhibits where they project his images on the wall in a huge room, and towards the end they played this song and I completely lost it. It's just such a hauntingly beautiful piece.
Somewhere, Lori Liebermann is in that audience and Mr. McLean is the reason that she wrote the lyrics to "Killing Me Softly" that night (Roberta Flack made it a huge hit)
This sing has haunted me with its tragic yet beautiful lyrics and Don's performance, I recently flew from the UK to NY for a holiday, top of my list was a visit to MoMa, to stand in front of The Starry Night brought tears to my eyes. RIP Vincent Van Gogh you were before your time, we are listening now
Thanks, Salvo - this is my favorite by Don.. pure poetry and an amazing tribute to Vincent Van Gogh... (everybody knows DM primarily for "American Pie"... but IMHO this is true Don.. at his best.) appreciate your reaction...
Like millions of artists, outcasts, and simply lonely people, I’ve always loved Vincent. If you haven’t read his life story, please do; but prepare your heart in advance
Genius is spot on! This song blew my mind when I first heard it many years ago and continues to be one of my all-time favorites! It is written so well that even those who have no idea who Vincent van Gogh was are moved by the incredible lyrics and search out the story of his amazing yet tragic life. If you have not seen his work.. take a moment to take it in, and read about Vincent and what he was trying to portray thru his paintings.
I went to the Van Gogh tour in Minneapolis when it was here in town. There was a guy outside the venue who dropped by and played this song near the entrance. A lot of people stopped to listen and I think it had an impact. I think at least a few people left the exhibit understanding Vincent, and the beauty of the world that he painted, just a little bit better because of that unknown singer.
Don McLean is a true wordsmith. His ability to put his thoughts on paper and then into song is truly amazing. And I believe that it is something that has been lost over the past few generations.
I can’t believe you haven’t done this before! This is an amazing song, like absolutely no other ever in the world. A sad but beautiful thing that gives me goosebumps every time ❤
Even in the hippie & folk scene of the time, this song was one of those that towered above the rest. The early 70s was a very mellow time period on public radio after the wild hard rocking late 60s. The airwaves were filled with tunes like this. It was a special time that died out with the birth of disco in 74.
Powerful, beautiful tribute to Van Gogh. Delivered sincerely, honestly and impactfully. And your reaction, as always as sincere as the tribute song....
A soul and genius to match Vincent's. How can these words and music not make your heart bleed for Vincent. McLean has created a timeless masterpiece that we can hear and feel. Only after he is gone and decades later does Vincent receive the love and admiration he desired and needed. His life and story is fascinating!!! The best portrail I've seen is "At eternity's gate" I hope you check it out 😊 always enjoy your reactions and the feeling you are not afraid to show. You say everything so well and I always learn things I never knew! Peace
I love this song. The first time I heard it …Dons beautiful words just floored me, then the honey sweet voice and tender melody, made me cry. Not very many men expose that tenderness and vulnerability publicly. Yes, Don is a troubadour of the best kind. His storytelling is riveting and his kindness in the way he relates his music to us is extraordinary. Thank you for your reaction.
After over 50 years of listening to this song it still brings a tear my, I as I have struggled with mental health for 50 years because I was born into a dysfunctional existence. The greatest gift from my life experience of struggling is the Empathy I've gained for other people. Don McClean encapsulates this Gift as a Singer Songwriter. ☮️
Man so happy u added this to ur repertoire of reactions! I cant listen to this without getting goosebumps. Also it's seldom I say this but u should listen to the audio version of this too, on ur own. Not too different but u can hear the beginning much better. With this one being so touching, it's best imho to have ur personal time with it melodically & lyrically. Maybe that's just me tho. Thank you Salvo .. a classic for sure. Enjoy the evening 😊
Such a beautiful tribute song, it is a timeless classic in my opinion. Great lyrics such outstanding poetry. When you understand that VanGogh only sold one painting while he was alive, the underlying pain of his life's struggle is punctuated by the swirls and colors within his paintings. He had a wealthy brother who gave him shelter and cared for him but for much of the time, Vincent continued to choose to live on the street. MacLean's vocals are a smooth and gentle as the brush strokes VanGogh laid upon the canvas. Thank you.
Don comes across as sincere for a reason few note -- he was not only singing about Van Gogh but also about himself. McLean grew up a five-minute bike ride from my home -- he used to sing and play guitar for neighborhood kids before he became famous. But his talent was matched by sadness and feeling of isolation. He had a tumultuous with his father, who died of a heart attack after seeing one of Don's report cards, he has a sister who struggled with mental illness, he had trouble feeling close to his peers, and his first marriage was falling apart at the time he wrote Vincent. In short, Don felt like he was misunderstood and unappreciated by those closest to him, so when he read a bio of Van Gogh written by the artist's brother, he felt empathy so strong he jotted down the lyrics on napkins in the school where he worked in the high school's music department.
I love the video by wysty67 on RUclips with 66 million views, it showcases all of Van-Gogh's paintings referenced in the lyrics. McLean's artistry of lyrics captures the paintings brilliantly.
This was one of my favorite songs when I was a teenager. Like Don, I got interested in Van Gogh after reading a book about his life - in my case, Lust for Life which was made into a film starring Kirk Douglas as Vincent. Both the book and this song get me choked up every time. As others have noted, there is a fantastic song/video with Don and Home Free singing this that was released this year. I know you would enjoy it. I have seen Don McLean (pronounce MacLain) live in concert and he is magical. He is still performing.
This song is a life changer, honestly. Someone on RUclips has a video that puts the paintings in the background of the song. I recommend you watch that too even if on your own.
Love you bro. Your sincerity and honesty has made you one of my favorite channels. Keep on being your humble self. In my book, it keeps you above the rest.
He paints with words. I always choke up when he begins...and when no hope was left in sight...that rips my heart out every time. Van Gogh never sold during his lifetime. An artist committed to his work but with no soft place to fall. Another great reaction from you. Oh and when are we hearing more Bee Gees? Hmm?
This song and the real Vincent have touched me deeply through my adult life. I discovered Van Gogh art and his tragic story about the time this song came out. I was about 20 years old in college, and struggling with serious depression, isolation, and thoughts of suicide. Having an artist hero helped me hang on off and on through my years. I'm 73 and still here, still love this song, and still love Vincent.
I've loved this song since the 80s ..it's about the artist. Vincent Van Gogh. Whom it was thought to have suffered from Schizophrenia. My favourite artist.such a beautiful dedication .
1. I can't hear this without tearing up. 2. "Flaming flowers that brightly blaze" has got to be the most incredible 5-word phrase in all of popular music 3. I visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and although "The Starry Night" was not there, there was a still life of pears that took my breath away. And I don't mean I really liked it -- I mean it literally made me stop breathing. The man had just an unbelievable talent.
I disagree. I like that version, but the single voice of McLean on the original conveys a feeling of isolation that Vincent must have felt, and that McLean felt when he wrote the song.
I saw him this past July, he still has a great voice. But this song "LIVE" is impossible to beat. It will make you think. It has always been my favorite song by Don McLean.
Lol Lynn bought the song reaction on Patreon, gifted to me, and I requested a song for Jodi. ~SALVO SQUAD~
nice group effort there
I believe this is the most beautiful song ever written. Makes me cry every time I hear it. He was such a beautiful story teller. His voice is so beautiful.
Me too.
Yes. I cried again. And his rendition here with just the guitar is every bit as powerful as the studio recording.
I agree. It is flawlessly beautiful. So sincere.
Me too.
But I could’ve told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.”
Breathtaking.
I totally agree
Even after multiple listenings, that line still gets me every time. 😢
I also love the lines A silver thorn of bloody rose, lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.
How you suffered for your sanity also gets every time.
I've heard it a millions times and it still gets to me
For anyone who hasn't seen the lyric video that features Van Gogh's paintings, it is quite lovely:

One of the most beautifully sad songs ever written
This song breaks me every time i hear it. So beautiful, so tragic
There is a video of this song with Van Gogh's artwork in the background. It is really good and helps bring the words to life.
I think it also has the lyrics, which are sheer poetry. I was also going to suggest that video.
I love that one so much ❤
I remember studying Van Gogh at high school and the teacher played this song while we were painting. He asked us why it made us sad and I said the line ‘this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you’ was crushing because those are the people we need more than anything in it. To paraphrase Milton, a good teacher is a thing of joy forever.
That's a great teacher! By asking you the question and letting you come to that conclusion, it resonates much more than if you are simply told something. Adding "never forget that" was a very powerful statement to you and others in that class.
Wise beyond your years. And we also need you in our world especially now.
Your silence/speechlessness immediately after the video ended, Salvo, was the ABSOLUTE perfect reaction. (Though, as always, I loved your particularly thoughtful comments, too.)
Yes! That stunned silence spoke volumes.
A musical masterpiece…a fabulous tribute to master painter.
One of the best and most emotional stories ever made or sung!😢
Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Just flawlessly beautiful.
So many people think Vincent van Gogh was just 'the painter who cut off his ear' when in fact, he was so much more than that. He endured such a long struggle with mental illness yet was capable of such breathtaking beauty.

@@christopherone1Probably more than you would guess it seems. But this song is hauntingly beautiful.
I went to the Van Gogh exhibit. Look over some of his paintings, and the lyrics will make even more sense.
The video with all of Vincent’s paintings in it is so much more beautiful!
One of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever written.
The beautiful song Killing Me Softly was written after Lori Leiberman heard him perform Empty Chairs. Beauty inspired beauty. Killing Me Softly came to fame with the amazing Roberta Flack recording, which I think you would enjoy.
👍Empty Chairs kills me too. 😭
@@daz_n It's another break-you kind of song. This album has no skippable tracks.
I always heard it was American Pie.

His writing is just wild. A true poet
Can we also talk about how good these old analog recordings sound 😍
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
RIP Vincent Van Gogh.
My darling brother committed suicide a year ago March due to a terminal illness in which there was no hope.
This song sends me right over the edge so I rarely listen to it.

💔 Sincerest condolences. Your comment really touched me. What a heartbreaking situation. I bet Tom was especially close to you today. ❤❤❤
So sorry. I completely relate that many songs are impossible to listen to after losing a loved one 💔💧
Sorry for such a loss. It sounds like you were very close.💔
Back in my high school days (1979), I was in art class and my teacher was showing us a slide show of Van Gogh paintings and she was playing this song to accompany the slides. I cried sitting there in my seat. My teacher took a personal interest in me after witnessing my emotional response.
Those teachers are the best aren’t they? I had a similar experience.
This is where lyrics end and poetry begins. So well written!
This is an amazing tribute and to be able to paint with words Van Gogh's life and paintings is understated brilliance. One of those songs that holds your attention from beginning to end.
This song is so beautiful. I cry every time I hear it.

This song touches me everytime I hear it. A beautiful song by a wonderful storyteller.
Such a beautiful song and sang with soul and emotion with an amazing voice..... Love it! Being Dutch this is extra special... LJ
Pure poetry. Don McLean is a national treasure. Such a heartfelt, sincere voice. You must listen to his version of "Crying" - so powerful.
This is a really good example of the type of folk songs that were popular in the 60’s and early 70’s. Lyrics that are so deep with music that is so soothing and singable.

Stunningly beautiful song. The studio version is unbelievable.
Beautiful tune. Beautiful artist.
The lyrics to this song are just beautiful poetry. The melody feels like a bonus.
This is such a beautiful song
There is a wonderful video using his paintings to help tell the story and illustrate the verses.

Brilliantly crafted lyrics and an overall composition that is criminally underrated.

I have always loved this song. One artist describing another artist so beautifully.
"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you". sigh
♥️
One of my favorite songs and artist, Don McLean. I usually a mess after playing this song.Brilliant song!!!!
Don McLean teamed with Home Free to release this. It is certainly a beautiful song, and Don's voice STILL brings this song!
As soon as I hear the first three words, I instantly relax. It's an all-time favorite in my life. Thanks for doing this reaction!
Thank you, you opened my Eyes on this one. Absolutely Beautiful.

It is a really beautiful song.

this song hurts me, I can empathize with Vincent, depression, no value , he was heartbroken and misunderstood. My favorite artist.
Love you bro. Your sincerity and honesty has made you one of my favorite channels. Keep on being your humble self. In my book, it keeps you above the rest.

Your reaction as usual relays what I ve felt about this song for 50 years.I get a tear every time I hear it .Just beautiful and sad too 😢
I've loved this song since the 80s ..it's about the artist. Vincent Van Gogh. Whom it was thought to have suffered from Schizophrenia. My favourite artist.such a beautiful dedication .

Now you need to hear the collaboration of this sing with Home Free and Don McLean. It is more beautiful even than the original!
I’ve always LOVED this song ♥️
