  • The Hollies are an English pop and rock group, formed in Manchester in the early 1960s, though most of the band members are from throughout East Lancashire. Known for their distinctive vocal harmony style, they became one of the leading British groups of the 1960s and early-1970s. They enjoyed considerable popularity in many countries, although they did not achieve major US chart success until 1966. Along with The Rolling Stones and The Searchers, they are one of the few British pop groups of the early 1960s that have never officially broken up and that continue to record and perform. The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 - Courtesy Wikepedia.

My brother passed away last week. This was the song I chose for my song 2 his funeral. He had such courage during his illness & always apologized for"being a burden", which he certainly wasn't. We were blessed 2 have him & know where he is. Until I see u again my precious brother rest in peace u so deserve. U are loved.❤

Agree with you Clive Shaw . Their lyrics, performances and their harmonies are epic. Those set them apart from other bands. Add Allan Clarke's haunting, soulful , distinct voice, its then complete.

Undoubtedly they should've enjoyed more commercial success. Graham Nash's departure shortly after their move to Epic was pivotal. The group had a more hits after he left including this song and long cool woman. They were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2010, owing to their success and legitimacy as great band. They're still a 60's fav of mine and I keep them in my Playlist.

I graduated high school in 1976. This is the song we all sang at our graduation ceremony. I remember the two classmates that were standing on either side of me as we sang, and looking at them both. As the years have past bye I have wondered how they are and what their lives have been like, as I’ve wondered about many of my other classmates. I went to my 5th reunion but I haven’t seen anyone since. I’m 63 years old now and hope my former classmates have had happy, healthy fulfilling lives.

My 7 years older brother suffered with depression and addiction most of his life. I refused to quit on him. I helped in any way I could and later on he straightened himself out and had a good life until he contracted pancreatic cancer at 53. We said our goodbyes knowing that death could not break our brotherly love. This song leaves me emotional every time I hear it.

For being considered a pop group, this one of the most profound and touching songs I have ever heard. It was a popular song of war in the 60’s but is eternally relevant. It tells of the road of life from which there is no return and how we should treat each other along the way.

Lyrics could stand by themselves, but to be backed by a wonderful melody, unique chord changes, timing structure, simply leaves me aghast every time I listen to it.

I am in awe at the humility of the Brits. I looked it all up, and see that Allan unceremoniously stepped down when he lost his voice - to every season - and was reminded also today for some reason of the Scarlet Pimpernel - one of my all time favorite movies - and also saw that Anthony Andrews is not a press monger and is quietly living his life, as Allan, with his wife of several years, in a dignified way. Our American celebrities, even of a certain age, have lost that.

This is a passage from the book Beyond Valor, WWII, fighting in the Arddenes, my Uncle Ray Gonzalez: While we were pulling back we were getting a lot of machine gun and sniper fire. [Someone in the platoon] said Breyers got hit. I said, "Well I didn't see him." He said, "He's right up there by that hill." Everybody left because we were under heavy fire and weren't supposed to bring the wounded out; we left them there and the mdics would take care of them. But I wasn't going to leave him behind, so I threw my knapsack down and I went over there and said, "How ya doing, Breyers?" He said, "Okay." I said, "I'm not leaving you. They told me to move out, but I'm not moving." He said, "Move out, soldier." I said, " I'm not moving."
In D-day I had lost my toothbrush, and Breyers loaned me his toothbrush to brush my teeth, and that's how close we were. He was like a brother to me. It was getting dusk and I told him, "I'm going back to camp and get some help." I went back and got some help and some men in a jeep to take care of Breyers.
As I was walking through fields to find my company and I found another kid from K Company that I knew and he was wounded, he had his knee knocked out. and he asked me not to leave him. I said I wouldn't leave him. I picked him up and put him over my shoulder, and his wounded knee was right by my face, and all he could do was squirt blood on me. I walked with him for about a half-hour; all I wanted to do was get away from that shell, they were shelling the shit out of us. Found another wounded man and tried to help him, also. I said, "Well, let's try and get out of here." I picked him up and I fell down with him and said, "I am going to go over here to find some help."
I stayed by the two men that got hit. I just forget it because it would wear you out to keep thinking of it.
Ray Gonzalez 82nd Airborne, All Americans, 505th, C Company. Uncle Ray was awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and many other metals for Valor.

Here’s to our friends now gone we should have cared more about and loved more than we did. This song was and still is a word from Heaven concerning what we should have whole heartedly done for the people placed in our lives.I know as tears fill my eyes for those I knew.I fell short and could have done more.Love and be kind to those God places before you for some of them you will never get another chance to tell them how precious they were to you even though you didn’t realize it when they were once in your life.

Something most of us only realise
when it's TOO late. The damage done can never be undone except
by remembering them in prayer .
      They will know.
