I am in Occupational Therapy school and hearing how it important it is for you to complete your tasks independently reminds me of why I’m in school in the first place! You are a rockstar!!
It’s very important for the patient to have that sense of autonomy you know. I’m physically disabled so I know what it’s like
It's not that we subscribers don't know that after your accident how hard it is to do the normal everyday things, or that we don't see your independence, your beauty from within, or that there are times, mostly off camera that you want to scream, get mad or just frustrated over your current physical status, or that there are times your in physical pain . . Yet, it IS your sprit of courage, self determination and yes even your sense of humor that is just so awe inspiring. Many would cave, and yes they'd have a right to do that. But you don't. Your courage under fire, your dignity no matter how tough it is makes us your subscribers love and admire you forever. It's what you do and become when it's the toughest that is the true essence of a person. I salute you.
I can’t even put into words just how inspirational you are. To say that you are brave and strong would be selling you short. You are my hero.
Love this! So glad the door frame allows you to wheel in.
You can try removing the cabinet door so your knees can fit in there and possibly allow you to get closer to the sink/mirror. We did this for my mom when she was in a wheelchair and wanted to reach the sink knob.

it's so unbelievably sweet how much Myriah loves to support her, yet it's also awesome to see Makayla succeeding at doing things for herself! I would love to see more videos like this, it's so exciting to watch as Makayla grows more and more capable! rooting for you both!

The live studio audience of your furry family helping you in the bathroom was absolutely adorable. You inspire me Mak! You're even more beautiful on the inside than you are on the outside, which is hard to fathom, yet there you are doing it effortlessly. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

As a fellow wheelchair user I can relate to having to say you figure it out to able-bodied people and I can’t say I relate to you completely because I’ve had my disability my entire life but I can relate to learning new things in therapy and finally being able to do things by yourself it’s a great feeling keep up the good work Mikayla you got this and you have the best attitude about it Also I noticed that you were having trouble picking things up and I actually have a service animal for that and he’s really helpful so just thought I’d share I know it’s not for everyone but just thought I’d mention it from somebody that struggles to pick up caps all the time

Makayla there are so many things I want to say but I’ll keep it short. I’ve commented one or two times previously and I’m trying not to repeat myself. You are the bravest, strongest, most beautiful young lady I know. A lot of the time I don’t understand God’s plan for me or for you. We do know though how much we need him. I ask God to be with you, protect you and to never stop blessing you. In Jesus name I pray. Keep shining girl!

Makayla you are just such a remarkable young woman. There really are no words to accurately describe your determination. I watched this video and am just so amazed at all the ways you have figured out life. You have found a way to make things work so that you can be independent. Those skills are just priceless. So proud of you! One tip or trick I have for you is maybe have a small plastic cutting board in the bathroom, to put on your lap to give a firm surface to push down when you are trying to use the pump on products.
You are amazing and an inspiration! ❤ While I’m not paralyzed, I do have some mobility issues in my legs, so I’m not able to do many things as easily (or at all) anymore, so I can empathize with being able to do things for yourself again. It’s definitely liberating, and you definitely should be proud of yourself.
I would love to see more videos of you doing things for yourself. I think it’s great for people to see and to appreciate all the hard work you’ve done and continue to do with your progress. You truly are doing amazing ❤

Hi Mak, there are specialized sinks for wheelchair users which are shallow and better accessible. Also they have taps with extended handles.

Hi Mak, just a couple ideas..you could leave the lids off of your bottles with pumps. Also they do make toothpaste in a bottle with a pump or a flip cap. Another idea is to use a wet washcloth when washing your face instead of splashing it with water. Sending love! 💕🙂
This was awesome and so educational. By that I mean the everyday things we all do (wash face etc) we never think twice about and watching how you navigate through each thing is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us!

God has made you with such loving purpose and He chose for your lives to shine in this very moment, in all of history from creation to the end, he decided our world needed you in this moment at this time. So awesome that the gentleman was able to widen the door and you can be more independent! How great . I hear just found your channel . I loved seeing the adaptive sports you did in Idaho with Higher Ground. I am a ski instructor, but adaptive skiing has always intrigued me. What is the rest of your morning routine? Also when you were in rehab doing your therapy what kind of training did you mom and sister in order to be prepared to care for you when you came home?

Instead of changing your products, maybe contact the company of the products you use and see if they can change the packaging to make it accessible for you. You have come a long way and look forward to seeing your progress over this next year.

as a fellow quadriplegic who brushes her teeth parallel next to the sink as well, i can offer one piece of advice! dixie cups! fill one with water to rinse your mouth and then spit in the other. then dump them in the sink once you are done. it saves a lot of mess and water :) much love xx

You are so beautiful inside and out Makayla! Just a thought that could make your morning routine a little easier: actually, rinsing with water after you brush your teeth can be counterproductive. Some dentists advise instead just spitting out the excess toothpaste but not using water so the fluoride can soak into your teeth. Could make your morning a little easier if you don’t have to worry about the water bottle 💓
Hi Makayla. I have limited hand function like you I’m young and I love my independence. I find the brand PIXI really good for my skin plus they’re quite easy to open independently like the gel cleanser and glow mist tubes and bottles.
You are a huge inspiration, even able Body ppl should take notice. You should be proud of yourself, life gives us huge bumps some worse than other but we all have to have faith in our self.
