The alert system on this radio seems more like a squelch control switch.

I really, REALLY wish that such radios had a switch to chose between the solar cell powering the radio and charging the battery. It makes no sense to me to build a radio with solar cells and not have the option to power the radio directly off of the cells.
People in places that get hit by hurricanes get these things thinking that they will work with something that there's a lot of in such locations; sunlight. Using that power to charge a battery is a lot less useful than using it to power the radio in such a situation.
Tips for people who want or need an "emergency" radio:
Get a radio that runs on a 9V as they're always the last batteries available, and you can always snag one out of a smoke detector.
Get or build a crystal radio...not batteries, or power of any kind required. Just connect it to an antenna. Landline telephone wires work quite well as an antenna. Often even an (unplugged, of course) extension cord will do the job...the long outdoor/power tool type work really well.

Question for you. If I were to find some golden age radio shows to download where should I start? What shows are your favorite? May be good idea for a video. I would play them from my phone through my CCradio3.

I like to see you understand on actually how many manufacturing companies make radios and how many companies buy the raido and slap their name on the cover of the radio. And actly what raido manufactures you recommend. If there be any way to find the original manufacturing company. Like car batteries my under standing there are only 3 or 4 manufacturing companies under various names.

Yes this radio and other brands todderbert mentioned are made by Shenzhen E Style Technology. Most china radios are made in the province of Shenzhen.
