Chief Darryl Gates was not pleased with the video. A personnel investigations was conducted culminating with a ten-day suspension for one of the LASD deputies. I had a great time fishing in the Eastern Sierras!
The sergeant did check our ID cards, but then he started to wonder if the cards were fake too. Once they allowed me to use my radio, an LASD watch commander arrived in a black & white. They were still concerned he was an imposter...
Subsequently, the offending officer was fired when he committed a telephonic terrorist threat against one of the victim deputies. This was after his initial board of rights hearing.
Not even so much as thick skin as we were allowed to learn by laughing at our mistakes. Instead of having to issue Public Relation's firm vetted apologies for any tiny misstep.
This is a great video and I had acopy when it first came out and I played it at roll call. Most officers thought it was great but a few were offended. I still think it is one of the greatest LASD\LAPD videos ever done. Code 7. I remeber coming out of the academy and being assigned to a training officer that had more time on the job than I had been alive. We kept requesting Code 7 and were told to "continue partol and handle the following call". My traying officer told me "A good policeman is never cold, wet or hungry". " We handled all our radio calls, we ate and we got off at EOW. I passed this on when I became a training officer.
what a find, I had this video in 87 and I lost it when I let a few friends show it at rollcall in 89. Its a great video, however it does have a serious message.
The guy they used for the uniform tests was prefect. he just has that 80's movie police officer look. Hell he looks like he would have fit in on the 'Super Troopers' team.
It's not funny at all...this really happened and demonstrates just how poorly trained and lacking discipline and COMMON SENSE that LAPD had back then and is so much worse today.....oh yea, they now have an extensive line up of officers that are NOT CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES......
I forgot how funny this video was! I laughed as hard now as when I first saw it nearly 20 years ago! I haven't seen it years, since it made the rounds at briefing. Great job guys!
I found this video from a link on Quora. I'm not a cop, but I've worked with them closely throughout my career as a firefighter. If I'd been the chief of LAPD when this happened, the involved officers would have been fired. All of them. Inexcusable lapse of judgement.
I'm a retired LA County deputy and let me tell you you do have some rookie cops that don't know what the hell they're doing I was pulled over once at gunpoint and when I came out of the car everybody's doll dropped because two of the idiots I was talking to in the county jail when they brought some inmates about a day ago one good thing about it I got free lunch had a good laugh shook hands and I told him don't let this happen again every Department has an idiot run the plate and I'll come back with agency or call that agency they claim they work for their division Captain will gladly tell you if they're legit or not using common sense
And it wasn't ONE report to write in the field, it might be six, eight or ten. Find a large empty parking lot with an overhead light to park under, roll front windows down about two inches so you can hear, set mirrors so you can see to the rear, and get your metal patrol box out and sharp pencils, eraser, and for me a tiny dictionary, and hope to get done before EOW.

I LOVE this video! GOOD JOB!!!!! LAPD had it coming to them, but I'm sure this video didn't help mend relations - but then again, perhaps it opened a few eyes and everyone learned a lesson.
I just loved this video, which I had never seen before. Having worked with both L.A.S.D. & L.A.P.D. I can appreciate the sense of humour generated by a stupid incident. I hope that the L.A.P.D. officers involved at the time also saw the funny side of this & learnt to laugh at themselves.
Since I posted that I found out it is a Hoyt Breakfront, they haven't made them since the 80's. Tex Shoemaker never made that kind, though I own several of his products they were ALWAYS so damn nice and fine quality, including a swivel Walking Dead holster for my 686. For the holster used in this video, A.E. Nelson Gunleather still makes a reproduction of this holster, you can get it in swivel, high ride or low drop swivel.
I had and will always respect officers at LAPD. In 20 years in LASD I have never doubted their professionalism and integrity. both LAPD and LASD have made mistakes hiring hothead mall security guards, both our departments need to stop hiring these questionable wanabees to prevent any future embarrasments.note to the three LAPD officers at the incident, "couldn't you just check if they are carrying an official LASD identification cards?"
Was that a .357 Magnum he was carrying, or a .38 special? Either way a very nice looking revolver. The LAPD switched over to the semi auto Beretta 92F around this time, didn't they?
It was a 357 and I believe the sheriffs department switched to Berettas in 88 or 89 but revolvers were still authorized for carry well into the mid late 90s

SDCA92101:::: Yep, we (LASD) are envious of the fact that we can make an arrest without a field supervisor present. Kai Myers This video was made in response to LAPD literally detaining LASD deputies at gun point thinking they were impersonators and felony suspects in a recent robbery so this is a satirical response to the LAPD Harbor division being inept.
