NICE WORK... I watched all your episodes and was surprised with the care you take in accuracy and providing details for the watchers!
.....been wanting to make a cannon for quite some time now but just wish we had the scrap yards like you... here in eastern Ohio the scrap yards are EXTREMELY scandalous. They take your scrap metals for how ever many cents per pound but then refuse to sell anything to the public even when making them a generous offer to pay more for the metals than what they paid for it per pound. From what I can gather, the scrap yards contracted with bigger businesses who periodically collect the brass, aluminum, stainless steel, angle iron, round and flat stock, I & H beam, etc from them. This now also helps the businesses who sell these products new and can charge you a HEFTY price since you can't get it anywhere else.

Actually built one in high school machine shop back in the 70's that fired....built the carriage in wood shop.
Try that today, or even in a trade school class. Also built a steel one that could use smokeless powder.

A friend and I, (with the metal shop teacher's help)
built a .22 "zip gun." It did work. Kind of a pen gun.
Had a 3 inch barrel, from one of his (my friend)
      father's guns.
I also made a "jimmy" to open some lockers
on the school. Proved it worked, and never
      used it again.

When i built mine I went to a steel supplier and bought a 26 inch piece of DOM seamless tubing. I had a machine shop tap one end of it and I screwed a grade 8 bolt in 4 inches and cut what was left sticking out of the barrel flush with the barrel. I then welded the bolt and the barrel together. I cut a oxygen bottle cap in half and used the round end for a cap on the closed end on the barrel. I also had the machine shop taper 13 inches of the barrel for the proper look. I shoot golf balls in it with 200 grains of black powder.

Pretty sure rifling would make a golf ball curve in flight. When you don't hit a golf ball square and it has spin, the ball will cut and curve off from where you hit it.

One little mistake , black powder blows up faster then , the cellulose flake powders . The pressure is the expansion rates when compressed. Pour a strip of each and life them the black powder will go sip and done but the modern strip will slow burn to the end much slower.

Actually the dimples on a golf ball are not to make it go straight. Its to make it curve toward the retreating side of the spin. The golf club puts a spin on the ball with the front of the ball rising and the back of the ball falling causing a curve toward the sky,...i.e. it makes lift by "scooping" air from the front of the ball up and over the ball's top like a wing. Its also how a pitcher curves or sinkers a baseball (the stitches help a little). A cannon ball will spin differently on every exit from your barrel depending which side/top/bottom it hits last before exit. paintball barrels have have a slight joggle in the barrel itself which causes a predictable contact point on exit and therefore a predictable spin. Without a predictable spin you are better off with a smooth ball as lack of dimples will reduce (but not eliminate) the lift generated by spin due to smooth surface "scoops" less. This is why we invented non-spherical projectiles and rifling. Either way love you channel and this project so far.

    • @tomwatson8144
      @tomwatson8144 5 лет назад

don't the dimples reduce the surface tension of the air passing over the ball thereby allowing the ball to fly further? The direction of spin would then dictate an arc due to pressure differential on opposite sides of the ball.@X-Ray Crystallography

Trunions should be bore diameter and the barrel should be on a carriage that will allow recoil to send the unit to the rear. Without proper recoil, the unit will be torn up. Golf ball will not generate much recoil at all. The fun of shooting a lead ball and the sound of the explosion is something. Instead of wadding, try sawdust. You should have made the bore golf ball diameter. They don't vary in diameter. Smoothbore accuracy is only 65 yards.

Both wrong dimples make for lesser wind resistance. so it can go farther and not slow down so much, perfect for a Cannon but for a different reason. and thats a fact worth knowing if you want to save fuel in your car. ;)

"All the pressure has to go somewhere." With black powder there is virtually no pressure unless pushing a projectile over 6 pounds. This is why cast iron and bronze was used long ago....little pressure. Smokeless powder however will easily generate 100,000 pounds per square inch. This is why most machine shops will ask you to leave if you inquire about them boring a cannon for you. Liability for all the people that don't know the difference between black powder and smokeless and are tragically headed for an accident.

Both are excellent. I would recommend the SW 200 over the 225. Only because it is smaller, lightweight, and is a asymmetric TIG welder, The 225 is an older technology machine. Both are solid! the 225 is the way to go for TIG. The 210 is awesome also. Doritefab@gmail.com

Dimples on a golf ball create a thin turbulent boundary layer of air that clings to theball's surface. This allows the smoothly flowing air to follow the ball's surface a little farther around the back side of the ball, thereby decreasing the size of the wake. ...Dimples also affect lift. Be careful with those golf ball, they can expand and wedge in the barrel and could cause an explosion, that is what I've been told many times. Not sure how much truth to it . I've built a lot of small cannons, my biggest was 3 in.dia. with 1 1/4 in bore. But all the old timers I hung around with always said never shoot golf balls, they will expand and blow it up.
