I’ve been researching Kalimbas all evening. This one has stopped me in my tracks! Absolutely incredible! Has to be, once again, incredible German engineering...
Wished that the notation tabs were given here too. The sounds are wonderfully resonating like I'm enchanted in Wonderland! Thank you. That really takes away my stresses...🌞🌹💕💕💕💕
Ok, I’m gonna do it, I’m going to try and slow this video way down and write down the tabs for this so those of us who are in love with the song can finally play it!!! Wish me luck!!
I liked the sound of the Hokema instrument so I bought it through overseas delivery. Please tell me the name of the song played in this video. I love your performance~ ^^*
Yea. but in my experience it won't sound so good. Alternatively, you can buy metal picks that you wore on the tip of your finger, but when you touch the kalimba with that you'd make a metal to metal touch sound. i know how you feel. After buying kalimba is my first time growing my thumb nails :D
Thumb nails are so important with Kalimbas and your sound quality. This particular Kalimba is excellent for very shorter nails. I was playing a Kimi acrylic, and a Gecko17 before I got my Hokema and my nails were breaking constantly to the point that I was gel manicuring just my thumbs myself so that they would hold up longer! (You could do this just in clear so nobody would see it) It was extreme but when I can’t play I get really depressed... I finally decided that my skill level was high enough that I was ready for a professional level Kalimba and I chose this one JUST based on its’ tone. It’s gorgeous. I was very shocked when it arrived to find that it has much softer tines than my other two, thus I needed way less stronger nails and way less longer nails to get the sound I wanted. The finger picks or Alaska picks in plastic and metal that I’ve tried are awful and they affect the tone of your produced sound. There is a definite plinky plastic and metallic sound when you use them. I’m finding on the Hokema that it actually sounds best with shorter nails, just a bit longer than your thumb, so that when you play you are striking the tines with a mixture of nails and flesh, this allows you to alter your sound tone on the fly, using more of the flesh of your thumb for softer, muted tones, or the tip of the nail for crisper louder tones. I have also played this with nearly no thumb nails and it really isn’t uncomfortable and it still sounds good! God, I’m a geek with this thing... 🤪
On the topic of hole versus no hole... no hole all the way for me. I like an instrument that has a more ethereal music boxy sound to it, so when you add a hollow body to that, you get this distorted almost booming sound that loses most of it’s charm and honestly for me, became annoying. I had to put a LOT of effort into playing softly and prettily with my Gecko17. Never again but to each his own! The HokemaB17 is likely the Rolls-Royce of manufactured European Kalimbas. I researched and hunted for the best of the best for over 6 months. You truly can’t go wrong with it! One of the best purchases of my LIFE! (Which I almost didn’t make but thankfully my husband nudged me to get it!)
@@jennaleonard876 thanks for the info. Never thought that I could still play Kalimba with short nail. I'd cut them as soon as I could buy this Hokema B17. I dont like having long nails but bearing it on my thumbs just so that I can sound well playing kalimba. My Kalimba is Gecko-April Yang btw.
Das instrument klingt natürlich wunderschön aber warum war es nötig die base sp breit zu machen? Ich zb habe sehr kleine hände, ich glaube nicht dass ich die b17 komfortabel spielen kann

I ordered one here in California...💕🌹🌞
Is it possible to play as cool but without nails? Which kalimba do you like with a hole or this one?
