  • Did you know that Henrico has a group of employees who study the local species of mosquitos and test them for diseases? The mosquito team, which is part of the Department of Public Works' Environmental Services Division, provides services and education to help reduce the impact of these irritating insects. With a focus on educating and protecting the health of the community, this team embodies The Henrico Way, every day!
During mosquito season from April to October, team members catch the insects in traps and then take them back to their lab for study. They can determine what species are the most prevalent in certain areas and test for the West Nile virus. In addition, the team treats sites with standing water, such as ditches, to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching.
"At Henrico County, we treat over 600 sites in county right-of-ways with an environmentally friendly larvicide," said Gina Serge, an environmental and vector control specialist. "It is safe for people, pets, plants and other animals. It is only toxic to mosquitos, fungus gnat and black fly larvae."
If you're noticing a lot of mosquitos on your property, the team can even help with that! Call to set up a free mosquito inspection, where an employee will inspect your property for potential breeding sites and advise on how treat them.
