Just a quick word about my daughter’s personal journey with Ozempic, another semaglutide. She had been overweight since puberty, she lost some weight on Keto, then hit a plateau. She started taking Ozempic and gradually upped the dosage. She took it for approximately 2 years, got down to her ideal weight, stopped the Ozempic and has maintained her weight loss for the past ten months! She had no adverse reactions. Nobody should intend to take this medication forever, it’s a tool to assist your weight loss journey, not a magic wand!

It was inevitable. People used to it wholesome foods. Foods you could see by naked eye for what they are. Eggs, from your local farm market, meat from your local butcher, chicken, sausages, fresh vegetables and fruits. We used to know when they all come from. We used to buy cuts of meats from local butcher and mince it to make own mince meat for burgers or spagetti bolognese, etc. Now, we go to supermarket and we don't have idea where these products on the shelf come from. Looking at the labels , we see list of ingredients we have no idea what they are. We buy meat, but it's no longer just a meat. It says another dozen of ingredients on the label. We are all lab rats for all I care. No wonder we get sick, we get ill, we prematurely die of some strange and new diseases no-one heard before. This convenient food is killing us. We are like cows, being fed blindly by supermarkets selling us rubbish food for as much as they can get away with. They only care to produce food as cheap as they can get away with and with highest markup they can. This is our reality now...

No more high cholesterol, BP, diabetes, depression, insomnia. My back injury pain required gabapentin, baclofen, and a pain patch to deliver 24-hour relief. I was so depressed from chronic pain I was on 3 anti-depressants, zolpidem and Xanax, my high blood pressure required 2 pills twice a day, and a statin, plus metformin for diabetes. Shall I go on? I can never remember it being mentioned. One doctor put me on a heart med, then doubled it, then raised the dose yet again. Years later I had one of these good docs tell me I should never have been put that drug and why. (He is retired and 93, and is still educating himself). For my entire life, even as a small child, I've been melancholic. I thought it was just part of who I was. Nothing major just a general sadness most of the time but there were a few weeks every year where I would fall into an actual depression.
I remember 5-10 years old trying to go to sleep, staring into the darkness and my mind racing with thoughts about life and the universe. Why do we exist? What happens when we die? Is the universe an infinity of nothingness? Would it be worse to live forever or die?
I'm sure most people can relate, and it did calm down as I moved into my 20's but only since going carnivore did I notice happiness and a general sense of being at ease sweep over me.
      Cure for depression? Ribeye steak!

I’m on a GLP-1 agonist as well. I’m also nearly carnivore working my way to weaning off carbs 100%. It’s helped curb my night time and sugar cravings. It’s not costing me $1200 a month, more like $100. I’m also on a lower dose and don’t take it everyday-I’m on a daily micro injector so I can pick which days I want it and better modulate my dose so I don’t get nausea. I fast in the morning, take my injection at noon. Mostly meat dinner and then no snacks. I’m also morbidly obese and scared to die, I’m desperate and scared. I'd been on Ozempic for 5months and in that time I lost 56 lbs but did suffer quite badly with nausea, for this reason I wasn't able to increase my dose above 0.50 at any time. The effect it had on me was that I felt full MUCH quicker and I stayed full for a lot longer. Also a very interesting difference I found was that all my life I had a very sweet tooth, after first 2 months on Ozempic no longer craved or wanted or enjoyed sweet things, if I ate them I felt like "hmm yea that chocolate was ok but nothing special" which meant I no longer wanted it. I haven't been paid to take Ozempic, in fact as I'm in the U.K I had to pay for a private prescription (£130 for a 3 month prescription ) and then at the pharmacy I paid £86 for each pen (a pen lasts 4 weeks). Ozempic has changed my life, it's stopped my cravings for sweets & candy cakes etc and it has given me my life back

Well, I am diabetic type two, and since three month I am getting treated with a semaglutide at a dosage of 0,5mg once a week. Not only did it cut my insuline intake in half, and brought my HBA1C down, it also completely changed, or better calmed my hunger. I already lost 9kg (about 20 pounds) and I have no problem to keep on doing intermittent fasting for 7 days a week. The first time in decades I actually can say "no" to food and have no problem around snacks and sweets, that other people carelessly put into my way. So, I think it may be lifechanging for a lot of people.

It also has heart benefits as well and as a stroke survivor, I am not complaining. It also helps to control blood sugars and my A1C is down to 6.5. I am very happy with this drug. Please don't misunderstand my enthusiasm. I also have made an effort to eat a healthy diet. After my stroke I developed an aneurysm at the top of my right leg due to the stent procedure I had. I had a partial blockage in my carotid artery. The surgery to repair my femoral artery and remove the aneurysm left me with permanent nerve damage in my leg. I don't move so well anymore as a result. I use a cane to get around. So in light of not being able to exercise properly this drug has had a great benefit to me. But I am only one individual, so take that for what it is.

I have begun a proper diet when I started taking the medication. I feel in the next few days I will be ready & plan on incorporating exercise. My observation on Semaglutide is that there is a bigger correlation with blood sugar levels in my system and how I eat than I thought. Hi. Type 2 diabetic here. I was prescribed this injection and started it two weeks ago. I couldn't control my blood sugars at all no matter what I did. I have been on three different medications at once (metformin, januvia and forxiga) and then put on insulin. All of the above became necessary in order to live. The biggest issue was that it has made weight loss nearly impossible. The more weight I gain, the more medication I need then the medication packs on more weight. I have to admit, that this all felt very hopeless. I could eat next to nothing even with keto and I still gained weight. I still had nasty sugar spikes. At the rate I've been going it has not been looking good at all, and no, my diet is not poor or unmanaged. I eat according to the keto diet. I also practice intermittent fasting (18 hours minimum / day). My liver releases sugar into my blood stream and the cycle starts again. I've never been able to get to the state of ketosis.
There is something called dawn phenomenon or DP. This is a release of hormones in preparation of waking up for the day and boosts your Bg level. In some people it is a lot more significant than in others. Usually it happens between about 5 and 6 am, but it can happen anytime. Some people also/or get something called feet on the floor FOTF, which causes your BG to rise right after you wake up and get out of bed. I was lucky enough to end up with this being one of my biggest issues. Both of these also cause insulin resistance for a few hours after you have woken up.
BTW - Diabetic nutrition specialists here in Canada are old school and do NOT teach anyone what to do other than portion everything. The main thing I've ever come across is indulge if you feel the urge but remember moderation. This is really bad advice and they go by the old model for the food pyramid where they want you to eat up to 8 portions of grains a day and do NOT recommend Keto at all. The only reason I was approved by my doctor was because I had epilepsy and I guess Keto is recommended for that.
My BMI is 36 and I've been this weight for the last 22 years. My metabolism was badly damaged and slowed down to a terrible crawl when I was 16 . I was given a shot for a 3 month long birth control and I never recovered from that. It was at the beginning of the trial and in those three months I gained 70lbs. I friend of mine was rendered infertile. Another was so sick that she had to be sent to the hospital. I went from 160lbs to 230lbs in three months. Just let that sit with you for a minute. I'm just lucky when I can keep that number stable. Nevermind loosing any of it.
The goal according to my doctor though, is to increase the dose slowly and then ease off of the other medication. This should help with the weight loss, the neuropathy, the insomnia, the hair loss / thinning and many other problems I've got going on. I still have to keep up with continuing the healthy diet and exercise. I do have some bad side effects. I feel sick most of the time and my appetite is next to nothing. Even fasting hadn't gotten me anywhere. My blood sugars have been going down since I started taking the shot, thankfully, not fast but they look a lot better. I've went from an average of 16.6 mmol/l = 298.8 mg/dl (just after lunch reading) to 10.2 mmol/l = 183.6 mg/dl (just after lunch reading). That's huge for me!
Don't get me wrong, this does scare me. I'm prone to side effects and have a weak immune system as it is, but desperation does turn to hope when it comes to things like this. Everything has to be kept charted. My blood sugars, side effects, blood pressure, how much I sleep, when I eat and what it is. Even how many fluids I have a day. I have to track my activity and take multivitamins. This injection can cause lean muscle loss so even there I have to stay mindful. Luckily my doctor is pretty amazing and will keep track with me. I see her every week. It was either take a chance on this, or face organ shut down eventually with the diabetes.
Please don't judge someone for a struggle that you don't have to experience yourself. I've read a lot of the comments and they are heartbreaking. Circumstances are different for every person. Be kind please. :(
Thank you Dr. Berry for posting this video. I appreciate a neutral look at medication. I would also welcome any advice.

Back in the early 1990s my husband and I got Fen-Phen from our doctor, shortly after it was FDA approved. I couldn’t take it because I had all the side effects listed below, not to mention I didn’t lose one pound. FDA pulled Fen-Phen from shelves in 1997 due to concerns about damage the drug was doing to patients' heart valves.
Some of the serious side effects of Fen-Phen include increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, restlessness, dizziness, tremor, insomnia, shortness of breath, chest pain, and swelling of the legs and ankles.
I don’t believe taking a pill will solve the obesity problem because changing your life style forever is what I believe works to lose weight.
However, some people are just frustrated and will use this drug to solve their obesity problems.
Only time will tell how dangerous this drug will be just like all the others approved by the FDA so billions of dollars will be made by big pharma.

    Dr. Berry,
I really enjoy your videos so much. I know that coming from a physician that the information is exact and well researched. I’m trying so hard, but not to too hard, because of my disability. See, I’ve had a brain aneurysm/stroke in 2010 so I have problems with balance so I walk with a cane. My memory is a little blurry at times especially to the things in the past. I’ve lost 6 pounds but been on this half way for about a month. I can handle the intermittent fasting but I’m not eating the meat 🥩 that I should on a carnivore diet. I had an EGD a couple weeks ago which showed terrible irritation in my esophagus and stomach- the dr put me on proton pump inhibitors thus took me off my Pepcid 40mg BID. It has been difficult to swallow steak and meats so I’ve been eating soups which hasn’t contributed to my weight loss. Do you have any suggestions for me on what to do? What to eat that would not be so irritating to my gut/esophagus? I would appreciate it so much 🌺🌺🌺 I appreciate all your hard work - I worked for 26 years as a ICU RN. I miss it.

3:12 Yes, that is exactly my experience with daily semaglutide (Victoza). Combined with gym and keto, I lost 40 lbs initially (2 years ago). It stopped working after about 12 weeks. I've tried it a couple of times since with initial benefit, but stops after about 8 weeks. Seems like keto and IF are better long term.
10:30 The key to eliminating side effects with semaglutide is to not overeat at any one meal. Semaglutide slows gastric emptying, and it raises hell if a meal is too large. It took one episode for me to learn that lesson; zero side effects after I slowed down a bit.

Victoza (Liraglutide= quite similar to semaglutide) is aimed at Type-2 diabetics to help them avoid being dependent on Insulin and does actually quite a good job.
Weight loss is only a side effect.
What they did here is that they upped the dosage so that the side effect becomes the main effect.

I think they're on the right track, as far as altering appetite hormones. As far as people taking advantage and eating junk, etc., people who are non obese are doing that too. So there's this perception that only obese are eating bad food. It's a "hormonal" disease more and more. Non obese people aren't superior in their behaviors, in their nutritional behaviors, they just don't have the disease of messed up appetite hormones.

Most men are looking for that magic pill, instant gratification, and jeopardize their health for it, because they all know they are invincible and will live forever! 😵‍💫🥴🥺 The only 'short cut' is shortening our lives! But fast (this includes sleep time),and eating orgainic, grass fed, etc. in an 8 hours window only, removing sugars, that includes carbs that turn to sugar. Organic fruit will become your best friend but you can't taste fruit if you have eaten sugar, and my own fail is to not eat 3 hours before bed, and getting to sleep at a reasonable time! All of this including healthy fats in your diet, and exercise will help you avoid Alzheimers, and lose weight. Eating at restaurant, even only a salad, has caused inflammation in my body, and weight. Going back to my own organic kitchen! Be healthy, all!☺️

Two things should be noted regarding this study:
    1. It tested participants who had a BMI of 30 or OVER
    2. They concede that the drug was administered in addition to "...lifestyle intervention"
Regarding point #1. Individuals with a BMI over 30 tend to lose weight quickly initially. So a lion share of that percentage of weight loss could be achieved naturally, with only small changes in dietary habits. In fact, losing 14.9 percent of ones body weight over the course of 68 weeks (more than a year) when someone is that heavy is actually kind of pathetic. Many low carb adherents lose that much weight in less than half that time. For example, when I started low carb 6 years ago, I lost 28 percent of my weight in 39 weeks, going from 230 lbs to 165 lbs - from a BMI of 37 to 26.6. I continued to lose until I got down to 130 lbs.
Regarding point #2. How much of the 14.9 percent weight loss was the result of life style intervention? Without knowing how much lifestyle contributed to the weight loss, there is no way to truly evaluate the efficacy of this drug.

the problem with these quick fixes is that it doesn't teach people about their relationship with food. If you can still keep eating garbage and still lose weight, you will NEVER keep it off. You can't change the outcome over the long term until you change the problem that created the situation in the first place. This is why certain entities get away with telling the general public that type 2 diabetes is a LIFE LONG affliction that needs to be "managed" instead of telling them that they CAN CURE it if they really want to, but it takes WORK and WANT.

Ive lost good amounts of weight (30-60 lbs) in the past, mostly by doing low carb/sugar and high protien diets. Every single time I have been derailed by my desire to eat sugary foods. As an alcoholic/addict in recovery I can say that the draw to consume sugar, for me, is similar to the draw I have felt for drugs and alcohol. The 'phenomena of craving' is very similar in that once I start doing any of the above, I struggle greatly to stop myself. Im hoping this drug and its ability to lessen cravings =, when combined with a push to eat better, will help me drop the weight and not ruin it by giving in to cravings.

Pharma is like any other business. They foster innovation. Imagine if they didn't exist. I don't think people would want that either. It's a balance. Pharma products are not a one size fit all. This doesn't mean that Pharma companies are perfect either. Some Pharma products wouldn't exist if people took their health more seriously because of the lack of demand for those products. I think the food industry and governments should get more slack for their enablement of unhealthy food advertisement. All the sugar, carbs, fast food that people especially kids are fed on a daily basis is terrible. Kids are being conditioned at an early age through advertisements to eat cereals and drink sugary drinks. I am a pharmacist as well and seen lots of my patients loose weight and feel better with Semaglutide. Now, if a patient can loose weight without a drug then that's awesome, but doesn't mean there isn't room for Semaglutide for some patients. It does work.

I've struggled with obesity most of my life, I had pcos and insulin resistance before I lost 100 lbs with GS surgery in 2013, I have 50 more to go but it's been rough mostly because I've added sugar and carbs back into my diet😭 my doc suggested semaglutide and gave me a sample to try, so far I've been on it for about a month and I've noticed an increased heart rate, mild nausea and constipation. Not sure if it's worth the side effects kind of scary! To be completely honest it really is about changing your diet and exercising regularly, its just harder for some of us.

Dr Berry, I mostly agree with you, however I am currently taking Mounjaro for weight loss. I had already lost 78 pounds completely on my own with keto/low carb and maintained for over 3 years. However I had stalled and couldn’t move past my lowest weight of 203. With Mounjaro and changing my diet slightly (still low carb) but also counting calories to make sure I’m in a calorie deficit. I’ve been on Mounjaro since August 11 and currently have a loss of 20 pounds! I have zero intention of staying on this drug any longer than necessary. I am using this time as a training experience for my eating habits. Thanks so much for your videos! You are so informative!

I have lost 22 lbs so far with exercise ,cutting out carbs and injecting MJ every week. I wonder the same thing about the weight regain, not from eating but from the metabolic changes that occurred when on Wegovy vs when you go off it. I wonder if there will be a metabolic rebound, making it almost impossible to metabolize food normally without it. It is insulin, isn't it? I guess, I am not understanding how insulin can JUST effect the brain pathways and not the rest of body.

I was thinking the same thing about using it as a temporary head start, just to get your weight loss going and establish some better (keto or carnivore) eating habits. I have a friend who is over 300 lbs, diabetic and needs hip replacement surgery. If he could lose 30 to 50 pounds in a few months, he could get the surgery and then be able to exercise again and hopefully stick to healthier eating.
Even weight loss surgery requires that you eat healthier to achieve and maintain weight loss. I had a friend who died during WLS, so for me, it's not a solution.

  • @ineedhoez
    @ineedhoez 2 года назад +2

I started at 1 mg dosage. I didn't have any side effects that seemed any different than when I water fast. I was already in ketosis when I started the medication. I was concerned about my blood sugar dropping really low. When i water fast my blood sugar normally hangs around the fifties and sixties, but I don't experience any hypoglycemic symptoms. I decided to start eating (low carb) and not water fast while using the medication.
I think the people that suffer the most are people who are in really bad metabolic condition to start. My mom takes it and she eats like crap. She probably consumes 500g of sugar A-day. A1c of 11. My a1c was 5.3.
There was no transition for me because I water fasted my insulin resistance out of existence. I added ozempic because I was struggling with compliance with my fasting schedule. Even when I didn't fast my brain was always preoccupied with thoughts of food. I felt like I was in a craze of food addiction. I wanted to add something to calm my brain. I would obsess about food and I couldn't get myself started with fasting. This medication has quieted my mind.
I went on vacation for 2 weeks and ate a very terrible diet, when I did eat. I was doing pinch tests on my body and expected to see a good 10 to 20 pound weight fluctuation. Not necessarily fat but definitely glycogen storage from the carb I smashed. I was surprised to see that I only had a 2lb gain. I know my body and I know how it works, I was preemptively depressed because I knew I was gonna hop on the scale and it was gon to tell me I was 20lbs heavier. The drug definitely did it's job.
I'm excited to see how September goes. I am back at home and in my element. I am walking 2 to 4 miles a day. I row 5 days a week. I do IF for 20 hours a day. These were things I'd been doing before the medication but with limited success. the only time I actually lost fat was when I was waterfasting. Which I could only do a week at a time. I pretty much had no weight loss over the course of 6 months unless I was waterfasting. Even though I was eating clean, exercising, etc. So frustrating.
We'll see how it how it goes.

Interesting. You believe that side effects were minimal due to not having severe metabolic issues to start with? Your situation is especially unusual since you started at such a high dose that would cause major side effects for most people. How’s it going to date? Were you on a good exercise routine when you started taking it?

The only things that were new were my medications. Trulicity and metformin. I stopped the metformin as I saw it was a side effect and continued the Trulicity. Same problem. Threw the last three Trulicity shots in the bin and changed my diet. Weight coming down steadily and feeling better than I have in decades. Best of all? My glucose levels are low normal. Carnivore for the win!

Doc isn’t telling you everything. This drug already exists, already works, and the side effects aren’t persistent. I’ve been taking Ozempic, semaglutide 1mg weekly for months. Lost 25 lbs from 255 to 230 in 10 weeks (I follow diabetic dietary guidelines and had been at that point for 2 years). Plateaued there for a bit, but the weight reduction has made it easier and less painful for me to exercise and slow loss is continuing again. My A1C has also dropped below 5 (from 6.8 pre-Ozempic). Side effects were mainly diarrhea related, but only lasted a week until my body got used to the drug.
Will the weight come back if I stop taking the drug? Maybe, but I don’t intend to find out anytime soon. Also note the placebo group’s much more modest weight loss reversed slightly at the end of the study, perhaps saying more about the mindset of people who know they’re almost done with the testing.
Make up your own mind, consult your own doctor who knows your history.

I've had almost all of the digestive and other side effects. Sure, combined with Intermittent fasting, I lost the weight faster than I did on Carnivore, but in an unhealthy way, losing plenty of muscle mass. Less food, rather than less bad "food". It's an emergency drug for me. I hope to switch to Ketovore once closer to training wieght, which, for me, is 200 Lbs, starting from 350 Lbs. I'm down 90 Lbs in two months. Another thing is that my diabetic numbers are close to normal, which is unheard of for me. It looks like I'll keep my toe, which was posturing and now is starting to pink up and return a bit to flexibility.

Wegovy seems to be double strength Ozempic. My insurance covers Oz at $25 a month. Main side effect is constipation. Slows the emptying of your stomach and intestinal transit time. Kills your appetite. You do 0.25 for 4 weeks, then .5 for four weeks, then 1.0 if blood work remains normal and side effects are bearable. May not be for everyone, but its helping me along w keto. Thanks Dr. Berry for this post.

I was a participant in the Liragludtide for weight loss study (~12 years ago). They are very similar drugs. My thyroid immediately started to swell, and I still have a left lobe that is 2.5 times normal size, and a right lobe that is double. My CRP went through the roof. I deal with pancreatitis off and on, and I only took Liraglutide for 8 weeks, because the Endocrinologist they sent me to told me in no uncertain terms to get off this drug immediately. The belching wasn't just belching, it tasted like you were burping up excrement and it smelled that way too. Twelve years, and my body still isn't back to functioning as it did before the trial. Stay away from this stuff!
