Cheap MX5 hood window repair - can I fix it?

- My MX5/Miata/Eunos Roadster is a pretty solid car...apart from the back window falling out - not that uncommon on old convertibles. It probably needs a new hood, but for now a £6 tube of goop will do the trick!

I drove my Golf 3 cabriolet to the south of France in summer and quickly learned driving it around there was a sure recipe for sunburn etc. Driving roof down in autumn with the heater on is much more enjoyable 😄👍
yup and summer evenings and nights here in Spain are just perfect
That ' Stixall ' is brilliant stuff..., in the right hands !
The Rover bonnet is looking good up to now, hope the pesky discolouration doesn’t come back.
Great budget repair on the MX5 hood, it is a definite improvement compared to how it was before, and that has to be a win.
Great video Matt❤.
An excellent fix on a bit of trouble. WIP update, service complete; oil, filter, air filter, sparks. Fuel filter coming and will do antifreeze too. There was no service history with the car and given the state of the brakes i'm not hopeful it was a well serviced car, should be good after all this! Luckily mine has a glass rear screen so i don't have this problem. Oh but i did do the varnish on the nardi wheel and gearknob per your last vid, they came back a treat - handbrake is next. Much driving round in sunshine so far for me/kids/wife.
Stixall is good stuff. Kind of a silicone and adhesive hybrid. I'm a plumber and use it pretty regularly. The clear version comes out of the nozzle nicely but the coloured versions are about twice as thick
I think that Mrs. Furious or a local saddler/leatherworker may well be sewing a new zip to the window and hood before winter arrives. MKK produce both metal and plastic zips to any length in fixed and slide off ended one's.
Hi matt get some freezer curtains for the back of your car port it keeps the rain and wind away and there see through and easy to fit done it on mine there great.
I'd recommend getting the Mk2 softtop and frame already together, much easier job than trying to put into current frame.
When I got my Eunos in 2015 it came with a new plastic hood. Now in 2024 it looks just as good. Why?
1. Keep it supple with frequent coatings of Autoglym Tyre and Rubber care.
2. Always unzip the window before letting down the hood.
3. Never let the hood down when it's below freezing.
4. Always cover the car with decent cover when not using it to protect it from the weather, but especially in summer from UV rays which will otherwise rot in a very short space of time.
That glue you use I use that stuff when I worked in the coach screen industry back in the 90s we use to use a hair dryer or a bowl of warn water to soften up the glue so it could be used in a normal mastic gun ( if the glue had metal casing warm water / paper cardboard outer casing hair dryer )
Well done. I could feel your pain sticking that. Iv just done some sealing on my 740. Stuck bits of trim whilst I had it out. Got covered and got it absolutely everywhere 😂
Love the Peter Griffin/Roger impression. We need more! Good fix.
An interesting video as I may need to do this
Well done Matt a quick fix for now Best regards Andy Allen
I used a glue gun on the high temperature setting. It worked so far on the '65 Corvair. The Corvair lives in my garage, so I rarely have the top up. Top really needs to be replaced.
I find that if you keep the wooden sticks from a certain type of ice cream lolly, they are very good at spreading Goo 👍🏻
Invest in a decent sealant gun. Those £2 ones are just not up to the job and just frustrate you.
One teeny point where my XR3i cabby excels, glass heated rear screen. Okay just one!
When a vinyl top gets old, it shrinks, making it really difficult to latch closed.
I figured you would have taken the Hood off the Vehicle then repaired it..or to an Upholsterer to sew it back on.
You should have bought the stiffest paint brush,1inch,and cut half the top off, this would have done the trick.just a tip for you, before you do a video,do a very quick video on what you are about to do and ask for suggestions🙏🙏🇬🇧🇬🇧
Well I'm sure that's a relief! Do you have to buy a new hood entirely or can you just get the clear panel at the back replaced?
My 5 minutes fixs on my car usually last an hour
Is that all?😂😂
Peter Griffin? Nope.
Alien from American Dad? Nope
The Computer from Captain Kremmen ? Yes.
Sorry mate but it was very Kenny Everett.
Is this a new camera? Video seems so much more shakey and zooming around more.
You're not doing it right unless you are covered in it up to your elbows 😂
Did this stuff hold up and keep the rain out? Need to do similar repair to my z3 hood 😢
Try to get a cloth roof if you're going to replace it 😀
Matt caulking guns are cheap...
ummm because Hubnut?
Could you have not just cut the nozzle down, so the pump worked? x
Check out those legs! 👀
No elderly women were startled during the making of this video! 🙏😎
Yes there is something better to apply the glue sticky stuff, don't be mean and buy the proper gun
👍🏴😉
Don't bother replacing a convertible hood, just buy a hard top would be my advice.
Bullet proof??? Come on. He rust away under your sight. Typical MX5 to rust away in a couple of years
Not your best work Matt. Better fix would have been to take the hood down and park it in the barn when not being used. It is a convertible, roof use is emergency only.
but I use this car all the time, not much use in storage at the barn
@@furiousdriving wear a hat
Maybe the removable hard top should be on the shopping list ?
It is, but turns out they're expensive now
@@furiousdriving Bizarrely in the last house that I bought in 2005 the previous owner had left behind an MX5 hardtop in an outbuilding. After a thorough clean and polish it turned out to be almost mint. I sold it on eBay for about £400 I think. The purchaser turned up in his MX5, clipped it in place and drove away very happy 😊
Nice to see a cameo from the rover for a progress update!
I have some of that stixall stuff, if you need to fix any water leaks that appear on your r50 mini that stuff is perfect for it!
Nice job Matt! The furious sticky glewer!😂😂😂 I hope 🤞 it stays in place till you’ve got an replacement roof! Bummer of the paint on the P6! Perhaps the paint is reacting on who knows what! Perhaps Whiteland Restorations can give some advice!? 👍🏻👍🏻🆙 like allways
I do like the MX5 but to me its 1990's car so for me wood does not suit it. Its like its trying to be a 1970 british sports car and a TR6 or Spitfire it is not.....if it was mine I'd remove all the wood and celebrate the plastic. Last summer drove from dorset to london, with the top down and got roasted! so with you on that!
I've used that adhesive and bicycle inner tube to fix my MR2's roof. It didn't do too bad at sticking the tube to the flat sections. It unfortunately didn't stick other parts. I live in the north of Scotland and am booked into John Smiths Trimmers in Swansea for a new roof. It's going to be a long drive.
Great little tinkering video Matt.
On the Rover bonnet, is that 2 stage paint ie does it have clear coat? If so the clear has failed and from your last video their was black paint on your polishing pad. Great video!
I’d strongly recommend removing that style bar AKA mouse trap. It’s worse than useless.
the speakers in the headrest have a zip at the side of the headrest to access the speakers to replace them
I think a hard top is what you need for that mx5 but I no there not cheap
If you ever sold the MX5, how much would you sell it for?
Matt you need more JDMs 😂😂😂😂
Another easy repair also the bonnet on your is very shiny
That’s not a knife……
Better you than me...
Ok until you fold it down again... As the Frankenstein bolts are there, the car probably had a hard top at some time.
Folded it down this afternoon and up again later, all fine. My neighbour did his months ago and its been fine as well
That window relly needs to be sewn back in not glued
if the fabric wasnt deteriorated then it would be better, but as it would just tear it thats not going to work
Matt, one of the best things that i have found at getting glue, sealant and similar off your hands and anything else that you did not want it on is wet wipes. They really just cut through the glue no scrubbing.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed Matt that this fix works until a replacement is affordable and available. As much as I love a soft top in the height of summer you can get sunburnt quite easily when driving as you might not feel the burn when driving in the the breeze, much like swimming without any sun protection when even the lobsters start laughing at you when you exit the sea/pool. Thanks for sharing.
Where I work, we use stuff called teroson, not cheap but it's the adhesive used for glueing in train carrage windows, we use it for sealing batteries into metal boxes and have to use 2 tonne tow jacks to get the lids off to change them
Matt, I would 100% say to get the steel rims blasted and powder coated, they would look ace - even if they get powder coated silver/dark grey
In a Land where it can rain like Noah's Flood, a faulty roof is a BAD thing....
Matt, Invest in some new Farecla. I'm sure that old stuff would of scratched the bonnet as it had dried out.
Great video once again, hot with 22 degrees… try our 40+ here in Athens…
I had the same problem, I used tiger seal!!!
Yipee I love this car.
The Alien in American Dad / Paul Lynde? Oh right, I thought it was Kenny Everett doing his Cupid Stunt voice!
Nice Roger impression did u use the tea shelf?
I did not
Nice to see those wheels are still there...
not really, theyre terrible
Not to shabby Matt! 👍
Schmidt knew Matt , “If everything doesn’t go well ? Then we’ll all have bigger problems won’t we “ Schmidt obviously knows you Matt 😂👌🏻
Amazingly appropriate clip!
@@furiousdriving Yes almost as if you set it up that way 😂😂, perfect 👍🏻
