  • Like Cruise Control or ABS, Active Drive Assist is designed to make the life of the driver easier. The system helps to get the best safety and economy from the vehicle whilst reducing the stress for the driver. It isn't there to reduce or replace the driver's control of the vehicle. The driver can always intervene or override the system.

So, it only steers itself when the driver has BOTH hands on the steering wheel?

Both the steering wheel and seat have pressure sensors built in to detect a drivers presence. You do not need to have both hands on the wheel, you may however start to get audible warnings should you take them off at any time.

@@MercedesBenzTrucksUKLtd Will it steer autonomous when just one hand is touching the steering wheel? Because in the video they say 2....
It would be nice if future trucks would have some blank space reserved on the dash for 3rd party tablets. Many companies use that nowadays.

The steering wheel must sense that the driver is holding the steering wheel, not necessarily that you need to have both hands on it. This prevents drivers from leaving the driving seat or becoming distracted. If the system detects that a driver has let go or left the seat he/she will receive a number of warnings (visual and audible) for up to 2 mins before the system switches off. If this action is repeated 3 times the system will be disabled until the vehicle has been switched off/on again. Hope this helps :)
