Royal family power structure in Korea is interesting. If you know a little bit about it, a lot of things can be inferred just from the 1st episode. First of all, the queen never really gets to rule and her role is mostly to produce heirs. The appointment of crown prince does not always necessarily mean that he's the oldest. That's where the power of the queen's family comes in. The king may have multiple wives but the wife with the most influential family gets to be the queen, and the crown prince will usually come from that queen, while the rest of the wives become concubines. A son of a concubine can become crown prince if the queen does not produce male heirs or the original crown prince dies before he succeeds the throne.
In the case of Lee Chang, he was given the title because he was the first-born and the only son that the king had for a long time. But as was mentioned, his mom was only a concubine so he does not have a powerful bloodline, and the queen's family can easily undermine him even if he's the crown prince. The queen is pregnant, which threatens Chang's position because now he has a replacement if the baby turns out to be a male, so they can easily depose him through whatever means (frame him, kill him, etc.).
So why is the king being a zombie important in the series? When a king passes away, the crown prince automatically becomes the next king (obviously). That's why the queen's family is obsessing about hiding the king and why they're punishing people who are spreading "rumors" that the king is dead. So with the king walking around like that, despite him eating people and smelling like a corpse, they can argue that he's still "alive," which stops Chang from becoming king immediately. Since the queen is pregnant (hopefully with a boy), we can guess that they're just stalling for time until the queen gives birth.
These are not spoilers for the series. Just things you can guess from the 1st episode if you are familiar with Korean royal family history.

Unlike European royals, in Asia, all concubine of a king in the palace are his legal wives, therefore child from concubines are still legitimate. However what determines their position in the order of succession is their mother's rank.

By my standards, Kingdom is a masterpiece K-drama that is 2nd in the history of K-drama with a score of 9.5 out of 10.
The vast story of the epic, exquisite directing, excellent stage art and effects, smooth camera skills, there is nothing lacking in season 1 at least. As a big fan of this series writer Kim Eun-hee, I'm still waiting for season 3. I want her to release a new season soon.
There is a work called 'Signal' written by this writer, and it is not an exaggeration to say that the history of change in K-dramas is divided into before and after this drama. (10 out of 10 based on my standards, No.1 in K-drama history)
If you have a chance later, I recommend that you see this work as well.

It would be great to see more reactions to Korean period dramas. I'd say the best recent one is "The Red Sleeve" (based on the real story of an 18th century king and the only woman he ever loved-the life of this king and his relationship with his father & grandfather are also fascinating). There's also "Mr. Sunshine" which takes place at the turn of the 20th century, right before the Japanese colonial era and has lots of politics (also, it's probably the best historical series I've ever watched, Korean or otherwise).

Kingdom is the very first Korean original Netflix series, so I would like to recommend you guys some other high class kdramas: “Mr. Sunshine”, “D.P.”, and “The Silent Sea”. Besides “Kingdom”, safe to say these 4 are probably the only kdramas (with high tenses) that are on the same level as “Squid Game” so far. Season 2 is even more wicked! The politics in this series is too notch! The zombie story is just a sidestory to the amazing political drama. A concubine is NOT a mistress. She's a wife. Unlike in the west where a king has one wife and many mistresses the eastern King can marry many times hence many wives. But only one queen and she's at the top. The other wives are Concubines. Concubines there are many levels too, but below the queen. Concubines are above consorts (consorts are like mistresses, not wives, not married to the king more like partners but officially recognized and has official status in the palace). The crown prince is a legit heir because he is son of a concubine, a wife. Otherwise he wouldn't be holding the crown prince title. The reason the queen's camp has to plot to get rid of him so they can seize power.

Omg so excited! This is one of my favorite Netflix series period and it's super underrated, not many people react to this show. I feel like many general people in the US missed out on this one as it came out before Squid Game blew up but I feel this series deserves the recognition. I know a few channels reacted like Reel Rejects and Heavy Spoilers channel did a few breakdown videos (Paul was a huge fan of the show and I was intrigued by the trailer but finally started the series on his recommendations). There was another reaction channel that started the series after seeing that Reel Rejects did it and I was excited because they seemed to be genuinely enjoying the show however they stopped at the last episode of the 1st season which is right before all the huge stuff goes down in episode 1 of Season 2. They decided not to continue watching because they weren't getting enough views on the reactions (but they had several huge views on marvel shows, movies and other big blockbuster stuff to balance it out. They aren't a tiny channel and we aren't talking super low numbers either. They also watched Train to Busan, Parasite, and All of Us Are Dead so it's not like they haven't watched Korean content). I can understand if you watch something that your not feeling and decide not to carry on but if you act like your loving the show I don't understand not continuing it at all. It was super disappointing. So thank you for reacting and thank your dad for the recommendation because this is a fantastic show that just gets better.

One of the key historic event that seems to have served as an inspiration for the show was "Kyŏngsin Famine" A.K.A. The Great Famine of 1670 and 1671 in Korea.
It is believe the event was caused by a crash of meteor and earthquakes that followed it, as well as sudden extreme climate change. It is said the land experienced drought, flood, hail, frost and swarms of locust, followed by infectious disease on livestock and then human.
According to the historical documents that recorded the event, the famine was so severe that parents abandoning their children (or sons abandoning their old parents) frequently happened, and there were reports of cannibalism as well.

My understanding of East Asian monarchy may be flawed, but the way I understand it, East Asian monarchies have been patrilineal and therefore male children are preferred to ensure the succession of the throne. Since there is no guarantee that the queen will bear a son, the king often has many concubines to ensure higher chances of bearing a son into the royal family.
In this story, despite being the eldest son, the prince is a son of a concubine, and thereby will be a lower rank if the Queen bears his half-brother. However, if the king is announced to have passed before the Queen bears a son, the current Crown Prince will ascend as the legitimate king and therefore the Queen's family loses their political power.

This show was my intro to Netflix kcontent. In terms of the political intrigue, knowledge of Game of Thrones will help.
    1. Powerful Houses (blood clans) rule under a central Monarch
    2. Power is typically inherited by a trueborn male dynastically
    3. Daughters are married off for political advantage for the clan
    4. Clans/the ruling class show contempt for scholars/intellectuals because they're not easy to manipulate
So beyond the zombie plotline, the nonspoiler situation:
    1. The ruling royal house needs to keep the king's zombification a secret because announcing he is dead will destabilize the succession of rule
    2. The king's current young wife (stepmom to prince) is pregnant with possibly the heir to the throne
    3. If the king "lives" until that child (assuming male) is born, succession is decided. He's the future king while his mom rules as Queen Regent until the son comes of age
    4. The queen's dad is the head of the most powerful clan in the kingdom; he's the Tywin Lannister of this show. It's to his clan's benefit that this fetus inherits the crown
    5. But if the king "dies" before the birth, some may back the adult crown prince (already very popular figure). He falls behind his fetus brother in succession because the prince's mom was a concubine, not the queen. The king currently has no trueborn sons.
    6. This ambiguity could lead to civil war between the prince's supporters and the queen/fetus clan's supporters, which is why Tywin Lannister is going after the prince

Trivia, since I also watched your reaction to Extreme Job... Cho-Hak Ju (the powerful guy in charge of the Haewon-Cho Clan) is the detective who had the chicken idea hahahaha

The the show takes place in an alternate universe, sometime during 17th century. There are a lot of important historical events all mixed in so it is somewhat difficult to place the exact timeline.
Also, it seems that most of the king's political power is delegated to Cho's family line (that is the queen's family), to the point of casually drawing a sword on the crown prince. That would have been shown as a high treason punishable by death in normal dynasty situation.
The fact that the crown prince is the son of a concubine (meaning no family connection) also doesn't help.

I see many calling this a kdrama(unfamiliar with). I call it a series. Other than it being Korean is there a difference between the two? Educate me.😁 That being said I love it and hope there will be more seasons.

I always found it interesting how Zombie outbreaks are handled better in stories that doesn’t take place in modern times.
For example, I read a zombie (and vampire) comic. According to a vampire, zombies have always existed, but they never worried about humans (their food) dying, because humans have ALWAYS managed to deal with zombies in the past.
But then an outbreak happens in modern times, and instead of humans dealing with it, it causes an apocalypse.
The way that they explained it was that infection is now so easy to spread (airplanes, ships, etc). When people panic, their first instinct is to move, which spreads the disease (or curse, I don’t know).
So, since humans are becoming endangered, some vampires realize that they have to protect them. They don’t care about them, but they need their food.

Another great Korean drama. I recommend these other K-dramas on Netflix, "Kindgom Ashin of The North", "My Country The New Age", "The Guest", & "Bulgasal Immortal Souls". Keep these reaction vids coming!! Fun fact, the actor who plays Moo-young, Crown Prince Yi Chang's body guard, is Kim Sang-ho who also plays Cha Gi-ho, the Narcotics Captain, from My Name and yes, he played Han Du-sik in Sweet Home. Aloha

Since you say you enjoy political intrigue, I highly recommend "Medici: Masters of Florence" which is set around Italy, in the 1400s. "Rome" from HBO is another great one, set during 1st Century BC.
