These have always been some of my favorite sections. One reason is because Alexander McRae is my grandpa. He was 6'6"... not only is the room 14'×14', but ceiling is only about 5 ft high. He, and others, had to lie down to stretch out their backs because of how low the ceiling was. He was the scribe for the majority of these 3 sections. I have a copy of one page of this revelation in his handwriting that the church mailed me years ago.
This has been such an answer today along with many other small things. I have been a what if person, which has kept me from many experiences. My youngest daughter (31) shared with me the other day a turning point for me. Fear is WHAT IF. Faith is EVEN IF. which then reminded me of section 122 when God was sayin IF this and IF that…if you add EVEN IF it makes so much sense. Thank you for all you do.
Oh, what a lesson! D&C 122:8 is my hearting. This helps me learn the lesson, move forward and lift others along the way. David and Emily, thank you! Love you both.
Several years ago I decided to read the Old Testament cover to cover along with our Sunday school lessons. After a couple months I stopped, I decided if anything was to make me leave the church, it would be the old testament. That’s a really hard book with a lot of crazy customs. I’m looking forward to next year with you guys helping out explaining some of these crazy episodes. And we had an awesome Sunday school teacher at the time.
As a convert of over 30 years, I find that the Old Testament is the “Achilles Heel” of knowledge of most members-Bible stories that are beloved and well known by most Christians. How can you fully understand Christ’s mission to fulfill the Law of Moses if you don’t know about Moses, the Law, the festivals. . . and also to know that it was Christ dealing with the Israelites throughout the entire Old Testament? His mission did not begin when He came to earth. . I also find that the D&C are everyone’s Achilles Heel - You’re correct-the lack of an connecting narrative is a stumbling block. However, this year’s study has truly helped open my eyes to see how eager the Lord is to forgive us if we but repent. Surely “Thy sins are forgiven thee,” is everyone’s favorite sentence from this book of scripture. It is said so often. It has made me ponder why we continue to beat ourselves up when the Lord has moved on in our relationship. “Remembering no more” is truly one of the most loving character traits of our Father in Heaven and His Son.
A member for 17 years on Halloween Day, not intentionally - Since I was Baptized on October 30th, but then Confirmed on 31st. For years I'd thought.... when we're told to read the Book of Mormon, that meant reading it all the way through - to The 13 Articles of Faith. Years later I was told, we didn't need to read D&C (or any of the other chapters). Because there are many jewels, and much knowledge to be gained in reading all of Doctrine and Covenants, all the way through to The 13 Articles of Faith. I also found it surprising, that many long term members - haven't read the Bible all the way through either. Though I agree parts of The New Testament, can be an Achilles Heel - especially the Genealogy Chapter's. The New Testament, is well worth reading. Since it also holds many jewels, and much knowledge 🐬💦
This is an analogy that I came up with: As you go through hard times you get little heartings of a wall that will eventually build a temple. So as you go through those hard times you build your temple more and more making it more beautiful.
I loved this lesson. Last year a song came through me that put some of my own experiences down... the final phrase in the song is “I’ve seen every tear you’ve cried...I’ve been right here by your side”. I know that God is there with us in our trials. If you want to hear it, it’s called “By Your Side” on Christina Weight RUclips.
chosen doesn't mean to be picked............it means to become choice. Choice as in a ripened piece of fruit. Choice as in allowing Gods will to reign supreme in your life. To leave your humanity behind and become a follower of Christ.
Often when I read scriptures that tell of people asking God questions, and He answers, I limit the answer to the verses immediately following the question. I don’t include the larger answer God gives through the rest of the text. Doctrine and Covenants 121 is a section I have done that with. Today was the first time I saw Heavenly Father’s direct answer throughout the text. So often I’ve heard verses 7-9 used as Heavenly Father’s answer, but this morning, for the first time, I read the entire section after Joseph’s plea as the complete answer. In the first verses of the section Joseph pleads with Heavenly Father to “Let thine anger be kindled against our enemies; and, in the fury of thine heart, with thy sword avenge us of our wrongs.” Heavenly Father first offers peace to Joseph Smith, and we rightly allow that to reassure us, but the question remains - on what is that peace founded? First God cautions Joseph that others have had it worse, and reassures him that his friends still stand by him, and that in the end his enemies will be defeated and justice met. But there is still more for Joseph (and us) to learn about why God stays his hand in the afflictions placed on us by others. Heavenly Father explains his lack of vengeance starting in verse 34. In verse 37 he explains that when we (notice he includes himself here) “exercise control or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any degree of unrighteousness, behold, the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man.” We often separate this from the beginning of the section, but today it appeared to me that God was explaining why he does not use his Almighty power in the way Joseph was asking at the beginning of the section. By doing so, God would lose priesthood power. But by the end of the section, he continues to explain that Joseph’s “everlasting dominion” would “flow unto thee” “without compulsory means” if he is “full of charity towards all men.” As I read this section today, I reached a whole different level of understanding than I had ever had before. I gained a new depth of understanding on the necessity of having the Holy Ghost, on the doctrine of the priesthood, and on the need for charity and virtue.
I love that! The scriptures can be such a powerful thing! Our teacher showed us this song in seminary called "Peace be unto thy soul" and it is such a beautiful message! ruclips.net/video/rda8AzbAwVI/видео.html
I love these insights you've shared, thank you! I hadn't read the section in quite that way before. I would also add that God can indeed fulfill the request of Joseph to rain down justice and judgment upon the heads of their biggest persecutors (see verses 11-25, especially verse 24), but as you so beautifully pointed out, those later verse (37-46) also apply to the way God operates. He is there waiting to offer us mercy, even for His most wicked children, because He loves all of us. At some point people withdraw themselves so much from His offered mercies that justice has to take over; I think that happens through natural consequences and I think it ultimately happens at the judgment bar of God. But He gives us multiple chances (through persuasion, long-suffering, etc.) all along the way to make better choices, to learn, to repent because of the mercy He offers through Jesus Christ. He is both justice and mercy and He honors our agency.
I just taught this to my seminary class and we went to a 14 X 14 ft classroom and did the whole lesson there with the lights off so it was dark. I tried to open the window to make it cold too but the windows don't open. Also, I am so excited for OT and totally agree that D&C is the hardest book to teach. I have taught seminary for the last 8 years and somehow have taught D&C 3 times and OT only once.
Ye shall know them by their works. Works are also how we endure difficulties in this life and keep the faith. Joseph learned well, he was and is a man of strength. Excellent lesson, thank you both. Only the body dies, we do not as we are eternal spirits. Endure a little in mortality and gain a lot in eternity.
Thank you, David for the way you retell a story and thank you, Emily for bringing a message home. I have not found comfort in these chapters. This would not have been the right response for me to hear from God when I was in my wilderness or Liberty Jail experiences. I wonder if Joseph sent this 26-page letter to anyone or did he just vent this all to get it out of his head and heart.
How grateful I am for these weekly lessons! I look forward to studying every week and learn something new every time! Does anyone know exactly where the "links" are when they say they will add the link to a video or resource? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much! Another great one! The Doctrine &Covenants has not been as fun as the Book of Mormon but it has many great and nessasary things. Thank you for all you do.
It’s important because we can feel a partnership and kinship. The prophets have been really trying to teach the value of the partnership. As a woman who is equally yoked with my partner I want to be WITH him as we do great work. It’s not a feminist thing but a Godly pattern and companionship
Love the study journals!! Would you consider a plastic cover? I use it so often that paper cover has come off and I am losing pages! Thanks for your time and efforts!
I loved this episode about Liberty Jail. My grandson has been called to the Independence, Missouri mission, and I believe he is going to love all the church history there. I missed what the video link was in today's lesson. Can you post it here? Thanks for all you do to make studying the D&C easier for us..
Emily- You read a quote “between verse 6 and 7” of Doctrine and Covenants 121. Where is that quote coming from? By the way I LOVE learning from you and Dave. So much so that over the past year I’ve purchase and read all of both of your books. (I’m also a Bronco fan originally coming from Colorado so I love Garett too). Thank you for touching my heart and my spirit every week. You change people’s lives every day!!!
I loved this lesson, as I do all of your lessons. I wanted to share a link to a video about myths & facts about Liberty Jail, made by people at Doctrine and Covenants Central. ruclips.net/video/Ye6pWbe8q-k/видео.html MANY people have said that the cell was only 6 ft. tall, but research by a near contemporary, plus a lack of any mention by ANY of the prisoners saying they couldn't stand up, has "discovered" that the cell was actually 6'5" tall. Alexander McRae was the tallest at 6'4." So it was tight, but they could all stand up straight.
This lesson has been so good for me to put my trials in perspective but I have to say David’s deep giggle over Emily’s yurt released a lot of tension with me as a giggles with him. Love how you guys interact!! And I do love the walls of England. Now I want to see Ireland!
@@suerural62 Here’s a further source for consideration The Death of Moses (Verse 9) In addition to introducing Michael, verse 9 also includes an intriguing reference to a dispute between him and the devil over the body of Moses.[37] Jude assumes that the account was familiar to his audience. According to some early Christian texts, Jude is quoting from a document known as the Assumption of Moses.[38] From parallel Jewish stories, we can assume that the debate was over who should have control of Moses’s body.[39] The account in Deuteronomy says that “Moses the servant of the Lord died . . . in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulcher unto this day” (Deuteronomy 34:1). Some Jewish sources accept that Moses died as other mortals.[40] The account in Josephus, however, says that while he was on the mountain Abarim, “(one that affords, to such as are on it, a prospect of the greatest part of the excellent land of Canaan,) [Moses] dismissed the senate; and as he was going to embrace Eleazar and Joshua, and was still discoursing with them, a cloud stood over him on the sudden, and he disappeared in a certain valley, although he wrote in the holy books that he died, which was done out of fear, lest they should venture to say that, because of his extraordinary virtue, he went to God” (Antiquities of the Jews, 4.8.48). rsc.byu.edu/archived/shedding-light-new-testament/11-overlooked-epistle-jude Gaye Strathearn, “The Overlooked Epistle of Jude,” Shedding Light on the New Testament: Acts-Revelation, ed. Why have you erased my comments twice? All I'm doing is sharing official doctrine from the church. Is the Bible Dictionary not considered reliable? Or the official Church website?
@@joybischoff9558 I beg your pardon. The Bible Dictionary makes it quite clear that Moses was translated and did not die. Thank you for the further knowledge! I think if you had given your source at the first you may not have had to force feed a lot of us! Thank you again.
@@suerural62 I'm also sorry. I thought it was common knowledge but I was wrong. I put on 2 posts with quotes and references but they were erased somehow.
I am posting this so you can check out the validity of it. It says that a 6' man could stand in the hall and that they were upstairs during the day. Is this video false?
I saw the video on Doctrine and Covenants Central with Alex Baugh and Casey Paul Griffiths. Brother Baugh did his dissertation on the Liberty Jail time period. Is that the one you are talking about? It was interesting to me and cleared up a bunch of misconceptions about the Liberty Jail experience. I, personally, believe them. They are experts on the subject as much, or more, than any of those teaching the topic on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/Ye6pWbe8q-k/видео.html
Another source is Follow Him with John Bytheway and Hank Smith. Dr. Alex Baugh is the guest speaker and mentions that during the day they were upstairs, ceiling allows a 6' man to stand.
@@lynnetterussell7611 I think this link said they could stand in the cold basement. I never heard that before. I always heard that they couldn't. I mean, it isn't a huge thing, just noticed that everyone says they couldn't and this video says they could. Also this video says they were upstairs all day and took visitors there.

My whole life I’d stumbled trying to remember Kirkland and Kirtland until the day I realized T for temple
You must live in or near Kirkland 😁
I got that insight a few years ago. It is helpful for me too.
The pavilion is a place of refuge that hides/protects us. God is not hiding in a pavilion. Joseph is asking where the place of refuge is. Psalm 27:5
The showing your recommend at both places ( Kirkland and Kirtland ) part made me laugh out loud! 😂😂

I missed what the video link was in today's lesson. Can you post it here? Thanks for all you do to make studying the D&C easier for us..
My son just returned from serving in the MIM. It is an amazing mission! Your grandson will love it!
Reading chapter 121 the Casting Crowns song came to mind ruclips.net/video/0YUGwUgBvTU/видео.html
The Joseph Smith Papers Documents Volume 6
Is Don’t Miss This available in the Spanish language?
Are you doing the posters? They are so fun to have weekly.
Too bad we can’t have Old Testament field trips!?👀
question; is pretending cheerfulness - Pollyannaizim ?
I loved this lesson, as I do all of your lessons. I wanted to share a link to a video about myths & facts about Liberty Jail, made by people at Doctrine and Covenants Central. ruclips.net/video/Ye6pWbe8q-k/видео.html
MANY people have said that the cell was only 6 ft. tall, but research by a near contemporary, plus a lack of any mention by ANY of the prisoners saying they couldn't stand up, has "discovered" that the cell was actually 6'5" tall.

This song is such a powerful message too! It is called "peace be unto thy soul"
That was a beautiful song you linked. Thank you!
Moses didn't die.
I don't know but Jude 1:9 makes me believe he did.
@@suerural62 Here’s a further source for consideration
The Death of Moses (Verse 9)
In addition to introducing Michael, verse 9 also includes an intriguing reference to a dispute between him and the devil over the body of Moses.[37] Jude assumes that the account was familiar to his audience.

@@tammybrose272 what they said did seem to make a lot of sense to me. Thanks.
Another source is Follow Him with John Bytheway and Hank Smith. Dr. Alex Baugh is the guest speaker and mentions that during the day they were upstairs, ceiling allows a 6' man to stand.
Did I put the link in to the video I am referring to?
@@lynnetterussell7611 I think this link said they could stand in the cold basement. I never heard that before. I always heard that they couldn't. I mean, it isn't a huge thing, just noticed that everyone says they couldn't and this video says they could. Also this video says they were upstairs all day and took visitors there.
