I think blue hour creates a more mysterious and calm mood while golden hour is the eye's orgasm of light..I would say that my eyes select golden hour for its light, but my brain the Blue hour for the colors and mood.. always depending on the terrain and the sky current synthesis..
100% agree on that one. I think it's the big 'take home' (aside from the motivational boost, thanks Mark). If I go hiking and I take my camera along and I plan a route the agenda is waay overbooked!!
This brought back a great memory for me - I was in Bangor ME on business, had a free morning on my last day there before flying out midday. I drove to Schoodic Point in the dark, had it to myself for the first rays of sun to hit the Continental US that day. I took pictures all over the slate rock out there as the light changed. Had a blast, then flew home. That's the trip I learned how critical it is to clean your sensor and take care with lens swapping in the field! I had swapped lenses a few times and that morning sea breeze blew crap all over my sensor. Thanks for sharing your morning with us.
I have more fun planning out a area, calendar, weather, and time of day for a shoot. Before I start my trek I often try to anticipate my camera settings. Photography isn’t just about taking the picture, it’s about having fun.
You make me to enjoy to be a photographer.. I just started the hobby.. I'm enjoying it.and I believe I'm going to get better and better having Mark as a mentor
Love this post! I used to go to Arcaidia National park and Schoodic point every first week of October to photograph the foliage. You brought me back to those days. Now this was just over 10 years ago. Now I want to go back next fall. I just came upon your channel and I’m enjoying your channel.
Since your shooting with a smaller sensor you could use f9 or f8 instead of f11, the depth of field should be sufficient, the lens should be crisper and you could reduce the iso as well while keeping the shutter high enough to freeze those moving leaves. Really loving these on location videos mate, I'm looking forward to watching more of these.
Beautiful place and you captured it well. The emotions of when a scene is all coming together while trying to capture it all is quite exhilarating to me and seems to be with you as well. Sometimes I just like to enjoy a moment and not worry about getting a great photo too, but something about when all your planning and expections all come together, it's almost like a high. Great video. Acadia is added to my bucket list.
Thanks Mark for letting us tag along and watch you make it happen, interesting to see you work through the process. I always pick up some new ideas after watching your video's. Thanks again
Great video Mark! I like how you took the viewer along with you and talked us through each shot sharing your thought process at the moment. Very helpful and a great way to learn.
I really enjoyed this video. It was nice to see you setting up and taking the pictures. I wouldn’t know to keep taking photos as the sun rises. Great tip
Wow! Mark such beautiful images and I love how relaxed you are while shooting these, not rushing and I guess that's why you come back with these gems. Great content and a beautiful place, Mark. Thanks for sharing and I agree 100% that photography is the best hobby 👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊🙏🙏🙏🙏
At your usual best shooting Mark. I hope that your new system is working for you, you sure have a smile on your face and we all enjoy your advice. Stay safe. Neville.
Best hobby in my opinion too. Thank you for sharing that you use auto focus and then adjust from there. I find myself doing that too and often wonder if I'm cheating, but it's taught me so much as a beginner. Great video, beautiful place.
Awesome. You took me into the woods. Such a nice description and teacher by your side feel came at every step when you describe the justification you give for each camera setting you made. 👍🙏🏽💐fantastic Mark. Thank you for your valuable inputs on this shooting.
I loved this video, Mark. I really appreciate you opening a window into your thought process. You're one of the main photographers I think of when I'm trying to find a more epic shot, so it was really nice to hear you think it through.
I am enjoying all your videos, thank you Mark for sharing your knowledge. I also agree no agenda is the best. We all need to do more of that. I have shot mirrorless for years and simply love focus peaking.
Absolutely love your on-location videos, they are so calming and I learn a lot! I got my first DSLR in July and whenever another newbie asks me for tips, I tell them to check out your channel. Keep it up! 😊😊
Just so enjoyable to watch, couple of keepers as you said were amazing. Thanks for sharing your knowledge as it's very beneficial towards helping the beginners. I do agree with you that photography is the best hobby. Look forward to next Wednesday.
I have a summer place on MDI, and have lots of pictures of the same dead tree; the same path; the same cliffs... and am just as giddy when the rocks light up 🤣 - it was fun to watch you enjoying it as much as I do - greatest hobby ever 👍
I really enjoyed this video Mark, nice to see you out in the 'field' taking photos and have you talking your way through the compositions and your thinking at the time. It is also useful to see how you shoot, where you focus, your settings, your way of thinking. Being new to the art I have a lot of learning to do but this video was really helpful. Many thanks for putting this together.
Thanks Mark. The procedure using focus stacking/HDR/manual focus/taking enough time was invaluable👍 So many times I've come away with my potentially best shots to have blown out highlights or oof mid ground🤭 And yep, greatest hobby in the world. Mick
Loved the section by the sea. There is something about the movement, the light, the clouds, the sound and how they interact that just draws me. I've not tried bracketing yet but one thing that interests me is how do you keep track of the shots you do so that when post processing, you know which group belong together? Someone told me that they put their hand or finger in front of the lens on the left at the start and then on the right at the end of each set?
Thumbs up Mark! Don’t take this the wrong way, but those beautiful images were so relatively simple I could imagine myself capturing them, that is, you’re showing us enthusiastic amateurs that great ‘keepers’ are possible!
I didn't enjoy it at all! I LOVED IT! I only wish it was longer! Thanks for the amazing content. Every week I'm blown away about how much you give us for free! Love your channel so much.
Now this is the content I've been wanting! 👏👏 Great video. Loved that coastal composition. And I'm so jealous of the autumnal woodland scene! (I live in the Arabian desert...)
What an amazing video you gifted us this week! To me, it was especially helpful when you talked about using manual focus. I've started doing exactly that in some of the photos I'm creating. Using peak lighting tremendously helps me see exactly where my focus is in the scene I have before my eyes. On a different note, I'm wondering whether you were in some remote trails or whether there were not many people in Acadia NP at this time of the year. I know it was early in the morning, but you made it seem like you had the park all to yourself. Were there not many visitors at Acadia at this time of the year?
Thanks for such a laid back explanation including all the camera/lens settings of your walk through this beautiful place. Makes me want to venture out of the PNW to visit NC.
My middle daughter is moving to Phoenix next month and I can't wait to visit and photograph that area (oh, and see the grandkids, too!) New places are so fun. No expectations, just exploration. I sure enjoyed your return trip to Arcadia.
Hi Mark: Yes, I agree ---another great video. Perhaps you can share with us what metering modes you use in the shots that you take. Are you using Matrix, Spot, etc.? No agenda is the best agenda! I totally agree. Those colors in the woods, wow, beautiful! The reds, greens, golds, the white of the tree trunks....ok I'm jealous...hahaha
I remembered this video and just went back to it to help me in planning. We are going this year (Ocy 9th) about the same time this was filmed I think. This really made me feel better. I was concerned about a crushing amount of people (photographers/workshops as well), but when you were doing your sunrise shoot I only noticed one behind and one ahead. And when you were in what I assume was the Sieur De Monts area I never saw anybody. I know there were some, but it did not appear to be the crush of folks I've been worried about. You had some sweet light in there. I did wonder if you tried to get to Boulder Beach on your trip? Always enjoy your video's Mark - lots of great info.
Hi, great job Mark! I discovered your vlog a few weeks ago and I love your videos. Thanks a lot to share your knowledge and experiences with us. Cheers from Alsace, France...
As always great content. I loved the workshop last week but you are right in saying no agenda is the best. Next time I would love to spend an extra couple of days and trek on my own at my leisure. Perhaps next year.
This was so very informative, not least that you let your passion for your craft show. Though you emphasize composition often, light, and the quality of it was the overarching lesson in this clip. That and the necessity of chasing it, because it won't wait for you. Taking a series of photos is also a useful habit to get into, something I would have been loathe to do pre-digital-era.
Really liked the woodland segment, Mark. I live very much inland but have an abundance of timberland. Great to get another's insight and views. BTW loved the honesty at 11.07 referencing the filter, "it's doing something, it's nothing dramatic". Won't hear that too often. Right, that me, I'm off to Mullaghmeen!!
Mark, great to see you in an on-location video, a little less script-based than your usual sit-in-front-of-the-camera videos. Your personality comes across more clearly, and I mean it in a good way. :) I have a question about using ISO500+ in landscape photos. Do you compensate for potential increase in noise at higher ISO values in post? Or do you think the noise increase is acceptable/negligible?
I've been told that you can maximize dynamic range on the Fuji sensors by using ISO 640. This was the first trip that I put this into practice, but I haven't noticed any additional noise in any images.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto Wow, I didn't know that! After your comment, I found this detailed description: www.jmpeltier.com/fujifilm-dynamic-range-settings/ -- on a quick read, it looks like the RAW file remains the same regardless of the D-range setting, and any adjustments are applied on top. I must definitely do some more reading on the subject!
Mark, Great presentation on your seascape and fall woodland photography. The next two days I will be heading out to get some fall foliage images in East Auror, NY. Hopefully, if I can create images half as good as yours I will be a happy camper. Thanks for the insight and for helping me improve my landscape / seascape photography. Richard ( PS, the Golden Hour )
Well done Mark...great descriptions of what you were trying to accomplish. Familiar looking places too! I took four days to get home (arrived Tues eve). Some incredible color in Vermont, upstate NY, and Pennsylvania. Great working with you in Maine. Thanks for all your help!! Gerry
Glad you are enjoying my home state! I honestly never shot at Acadia and will try to do that next time I'm home! I really enjoy your calmness as I tend to freak out and try to hurry. That's something I need to work on
Great and enjoyable on-location video! Shooting, shooting, shooting. Thanks Mark, I don't know how many times I packed my equipment, just to take everything out again within a few seconds because conditions often rapidly change. ...and I am just a no-name beginner :)
Funny, I saw one of your earlier videos and that had put the thought in my brain of finally going to Acadia for the fall colors. Well, I didn't go until last week, but the colors were still great, even if slightly past peak. Thanks for the inspiration. I had a great time. It's a place everyone should try to get to once. Such a diverse landscape. A couple hours up the road is West Quaddy Head in Lubec, Maine. Have you ever been? I found it a stunning place. The furthest east in the US you can get...
this is hands on tutoring I love.... now, if you could include more shots of your display... even better! Thanks a bunch, learning so much from your vids!
Mark, I love Acadia, so many great places to walk and explore. I was stationed there 4 yrs and came no where close to seeing it all. I will be heading back next year for sure.
Great coastal shot, and niced and crisp! Now that you have moved to Fuji, could you do a post processing vid, I'd love to see how you processed the shot (especially sharpening!)
Hi Marc - I happen to notice that you don’t or at least didn’t use an auto shutter release - is there any particular reason that you manually pressed the shutter button ? I would’ve imagined you would introduce camera vibrations to your images... Great content as always
Do you prefer Blue Hour or Golden Hour Light the most?
Hey Mark! I am a huge fan of your work!
Thanks so much Drew!! Really appreciate that!
I tend to learn toward Blue Hour compositions more. I need to work on timing the light better in my compositions.
I think blue hour creates a more mysterious and calm mood while golden hour is the eye's orgasm of light..I would say that my eyes select golden hour for its light, but my brain the Blue hour for the colors and mood.. always depending on the terrain and the sky current synthesis..
With the right clouds I love the drama of Blue Hour. For me Golden Hour is king though.
"The best hobby in the world" ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks Mark. Really appreciate your effort. Can't wait for my weekend trek after watching this.

Absolutely brilliant as always 🤙🤙 I prefer golden hour my self but both beautiful times to shoot..
Really appreciate that Gavin!
