Absolutely excellent introduction to Warlocks! I have just returned after a year and 8 month hiatus, during which Warlocks were released. I have to say, I am now very interested in creating a tank similar (or maybe EXACTLY THE SAME) as Voodu. Thank you very much!
I am thinking about returning to DDO after many years off and found this video very informative. When warlock goes on sale I will start one and reference your video for guidance.
Love vid but would love to see it updated as there are more pacts now and to add that skill points are worth noting as many times I see Fay pact some dont realize that they need perform skill to boost sonic power
Hi Charles, I did a video recently discussing my thoughts of the 3 new pacts after playing through them all if you're interested... ruclips.net/video/6xW8VXIxNcg/видео.html
I watch all of your Warlock videos, even this one with my having one at 24 and one at 15. I had never taken the Cone stance before, just because of the way it reads for the minus to Pact Damage. So, I rolled up a new level 7 human and made sure before I put points anywhere else, I took the cone stance because of your description of its range. I went straight to Searing Heights wilderness, hung a left because I knew there would be three gathered there at a camp fire. I kept easing up click, ease up click, ease up click... Their campfire is at the back end of one of the large blocks making up this part of the area. By now, I'm more than half way through the adjoining block and *spotted, here they come* click, click, click *crap, is this ever going to go off??* Finally, when they were almost to the major split between block, it went off and the damage was less than stellar, and I was close enough to get arrested for molestation by the time I killed the first one. So, on my other two Warlocks, I will continue to avoid taking the cone stance and keep chain for when having to deal with mobs up on a ledge where you can only see or clearly target one. Maybe they nerfed the range and because of your high level, you're not using this any more with the two second aura and dual burst. ADDENDUM: I have continued through the area, trying to like the attack, and even with the cone's abysmally short range, it is a pretty good AoE for close range, if going for the "blaster" instead of "burst" build
I will just say this. Hurl is excellent, but mostly with some past lives in things like Wizard and so on, but if you are say doing 1-20 for race reincarnations, then Old One is cool, because I lock Knock.
The devs really did a great job with warlock IMO, lots of tough choices from the combination of pact & enhancements, and even with the same feat & enhancement choices, the different pacts will lead to different play styles. If you're going for a fairly shallow warlock splash (eg. just for the aura defenses), i'd recommend fey though, for dark delerium. Quick note about what makes hurl so good - it's a will-based instakill, meaning it can work reliably on the kind of things finger of death won't.. and hey, you can even take that too to mix up your instakill needs. Soul eater is my favourite tree overall, and i think it's pretty much the highest DPS tree too, though it's about cumulative effect, meaning they might not be as great vs. multiple mobs but they're great boss-killers once you've got consume, burning blood, and all those vulnerability debuffs stacked up. Good point about cone shape too - it's about the same size as cone of cold, and while chain has the homing aspect beyond 1st target (so can be great for bouncing shots round terrain for trickier fights) it's limited to 4 targets at once whereas cone will hit everything in it's AoE.
About the pact choice. If you dont know which one to pick id say go with fiend by default. Empyrean magic and hurl through hell can carry half the warlock builds
+elraito It's probably easy with any pact choice. I chose Fey and leveled in record time (for my play-style). Except for buffs, I rarely used the other spells: it was just as easy to spam the blasts and bursts. And little use of sp. I never ran out.
Just wanted you to know, I'd been away from DDO for a couple of years, and was curious about new developments in the game...then ran across your vid. And just because of this vid, I spent money on the game for the first time in years, and tried out the warlock, and am having a blast (no pun intended). See what you did? It's all your fault.
Pretty good Warlock 101, but noticeably missing is any discussion on stat build-out. I see you have a 54 Con, 35 Int, and 44 Cha. Some discussion of these stats and what they do for the Warlock should have been a part of the video. BTW: With a 44 Cha how well are your DC dependent abilities landing in U27+
+Amberscion Thanks amber! There are definitely a few more things that I would've liked to discuss, but hopefully it encourages people that were either dragging their feet on warlock or intimidated by it to jump into this fun class :-D In the video I'm not using my normal build, as I was working through a sun elf life and my enhancements were in part just to demonstrate some things for the video. In any event, my build is a tank build, so I don't actually use dc-based abilities like evards much. I mostly just burst-burst-burst-burst, lol. My build post is on the forums: www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/466496-Voodu-Warlock-A-Pure-Warlock-Enlightened-Spirit-Tank-Project-companion-thread
I just reincarnated to a warlock now so ty for that idea :) I had another question though... About shields. I notice you mention getting tower shields to hold but you don't take a feat to use them. I am a little confused on that part. I guess I just don't understand the whole penalty to not having a feat to use them thing. Thank in advance
Hi AOT86, I'm glad you found it helpful. Regarding tower shields, I think I was speaking in general when I mentioned them. With a warlock, you don't want to use a tower shield due to arcane spell failure, however note that Skyvault Shield (ddowiki.com/page/Item:Skyvault_Shield_(Level_25) ) is a special case, as it has no ASF. Regarding proficiency for tower shields, you can check out this wiki article: ddowiki.com/page/Tower_Shield_Proficiency
As someone who is new to the game much is still unclear to me. I appreciate this video. Quick question..I see tons of warlocks playing. Probably see more of them than any other class. My question is..is this because its new? Is it because warlock is over powered? I spoke with someone in a group yesterday and they were very clear in their opinion that while warlock was good and strong and new player friendly they felt that warlock is more of a generalist and therefore would never likely be as good as one of the more traditional classes. Whats your opinion on warlock? I have tried it and love it myself. However, I stopped playing it as there were so many other warlocks. Thanks man.
Hi Michael, I'm glad you found the video helpful, ty for saying. Warlock is definitely one of the strongest. Cone shape fiend pact hurler, double FOD+charms is a beast right now and can demolish high skull reaper content. It's probably the easiest in heroic reaper questing, so a lot of peeps are using warlocks to get through their racial past lives.
I must say, after checking out this video, I reset my enhancements on a level 20 Warlock to include the cone. But I personally didn't find the cone to have any range at all. Are you using a feat to extend the range?
+Michael Woods Hey Michael, sadly there aren't any ways to increase the range of eldritch blasts or any of its shapes like cone. I actually don't have a warlock atm, because I'm working through iconics on voodu, so I can't test to see if perhaps some changes were made since I last experimented with it. But like I talked about in the video, I specifically remember being able to hit the DQ in the raid when she was on an outer platform with cone shape, which is pretty far. Ultimately I would suggest playing with both cone and chain and using whatever you like best. I also recommend keeping auto target off and keeping yourself targeted when using cone shape, because of the aweful targetting mechanics of eldritch blasts. It took using cone shape for a few levels for me to really fall in love with it, so don't give up on it too quickly :-D As I mentioned in my reply to Wyvernjack, if you want to see a little more discussion of cone shape check out episode 21 of the Gingerlocks series. This was the episode where I talked about how I fell in love with cone shape and I discuss it and demonstrate it further. Skip ahead to the 7:00 mark to jump past the intro ruclips.net/video/8A1kz0T2fnA/видео.html I also use cone shape in episode 22-24 of the series. Hope that helps :-)
+Voodu Spyce Huh. Just sent a long answer which seems to have disappeared. You certainly made a case with your video link above, so I'll reconsider, but the chain definitely has its place. And yeah, the targeting is terrible with auto-target on: it always wants to trail the mob, even if you lead the mob when firing. They have a blast which follows like Melf's Acid Arrow, but it seems cheap for them to make you spend points on it, and you can't chain or cone with it on. Anyway, I appreciated both videos, so thanks for those, and your reply. Keep 'em coming.
Hey voodu, I've built your warlock build you've listed on the ddo forum, reading through you mention the shield as, and got to overcome it. You suggest crafting a lesser arcane spell dex item, is that from the old craftimg system? And how do would you achieve it on the new crafting system?
Hi Gordon, you can cast Lesser Arcane Spell Dexterity on armor, rune arm, trinket and gloves as a ML 1 prefix. This will give you a -5% ASF. If you don't use a planner for the new cannith crafting system, try this one ccplanner.byethost14.com/ If you are new to updated Cannith Crafting system, you can check out my beginners guide video ruclips.net/video/RC4TqXQbkmQ/видео.html and my advanced guide where I show how to level quickly and efficiently ruclips.net/video/Xe1HYsiZ2xI/видео.html
if you're referring to an aura-lock you can take a look at my build www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/466496-Voodu-Warlock-A-Pure-Warlock-Enlightened-Spirit-Tank-Project-companion-thread it's very tanky, high survivablity but moderate to low dps and I wouldn't recommend it for soloing beyond about R3. Good for group play as a self-sufficient tank with support dps bursts+aura+heals. If you're looking for an aura-lock that's more dc or dps focused then just substitute the defensive feats and gear for more dps or dc focused stuff. Feel free to stop by the live streams to ask questions if you like twitch.tv/vooduspyce :-)
Hey buddy got another question lol. I found your Voodu warlock build on the forums and I saw how you wanted to level up Con whenever you can on it... Was curious how is the dps on that build? It seems like you wouldn't die much on it but can it kill well is the question i was thinking. Also... what do you do when just floating around with the AOE shape..? cast? or swing a weapon? or are you just simply using sla bursts from ES tree? thanks again :) am pondering my final life is all lol
Voodu has plenty of dps for my liking and can solo comfortably. Boss dps is traditionally seen as a deficiency of ES bursting warlocks, as their primary damage is AOE. Single target dps is a little slower on Voodu, so a solo boss beatdown can take a few minutes on higher difficulties. People wanting high dps builds should avoid Voodu's build. I enjoy the survivability and don't mind setting it to auto attack on a boss and sitting back looking at something on my other monitor lol. I would recommend taking a look at a ladder challenge live stream I did on Voodu where I solo a segment of a quest on LE+R1+R2+R3+++... you can see for yourself how Voodu handles and decide if it's the kind of performance you're looking for. ruclips.net/video/zo53EiFOERE/видео.html Currently while solo farming legendary Ravenloft loot I am breezing through R3's in a reasonable amount of time. I also did some Ravenloft "first look" videos on Voodu so you can check those out too if you like... ruclips.net/p/PLTX5IZhNI5ubjbsc6TJKZssCe_TcTKsfs
So I returned to DDO After a very long time and i wanted to try and make a Warlock primarily focusing on Blasting what Enhancement tree should I use and what stat's are important, and i wanted to do fey pact but I have heard you have to take Performance to boost Sonic damage or are there other methods of increasing sonic damage?
Hi Nick, wb! I would recommend taking a look at Strimtom's build www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/514782-An-easy-warlock-levelling-build-for-players-of-any-experience-level and Slarden's build www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/460700-Pure-Casting-Warlock-DC-Eld-Blast-Build
I'm not really a build-focused kind of a player. I'm more of a content person, so not the best person to ask about builds. Can't say I've heard of anyone doing fvs/warlock tho.
I have been looking at a blasting cone build on the forums and it uses mainly the soul eater tree. I was wondering... you said that the enlightened spirit tree was for melee... I really like the idea of that celestial spirit aura though but i want to be ranged how would that work?
Hi AOT86, Aasimar is not really an option for warlock because the stances/forms of the race are incompatible with warlock pact form and the enlightened spirit Celestial Spirit stance. A warlock cannot have both the enlightened spirit aura on and also blast (the ranged attack), as they are both "shape stances" and you can only have one shape stance on at a time. ES tree isn't for melee, per se, the point of what I was saying in that part of the video is that melee players, who are accustomed to a close-quarters play style, would adapt well to an enlightened spirit warlock play style. Some people are playing ES as more melee focused though. And this speaks to the larger point that warlocks can be built to fit a variety of play styles. Hope that helps :-)
I went fiend till 21 then switched to ES which i loved, going to try old one next, question im seeing builds going cha but also other warlocks going intell for spell power, k want to be pew pew not spells, so would i chose cha or intell to raise spell power.
I'm not really up on the latest and greatest warlock pew pew builds. I'm still doing the ES burster thing. My best recommendation would be to read through Slarden's post in the warlock forum. It's a really nice writeup www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/460700-Pure-Casting-Warlock-DC-Eld-Blast-Build
are u sure thad negative spell power scales with devotion?? cuz there are nulification item thad may do the work or not?? this is important to build right. tks in any case i seen most of ur warlock vidieo- bb
+Nación Mapache If I said negative scales with devotion then I misspoke. It's the evil damage from Utterdark Blast that is affected by Radiance. You are correct that negative spell power is affected by nulification.
+Nación Mapache yup. Utterdark changes the force damage to evil damage. Evil damage is alignment damage, so is affected by a radiance item. Radiance boosts light and alignment spell power. Here is the wiki entry on radiance spell power ddowiki.com/page/Radiance_(spell_boost)
Hey Nathaniel, I have all the details in my build post: www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/466496-Voodu-Warlock-A-Pure-Warlock-Enlightened-Spirit-Tank-Project-companion-thread if you have specific questions after checking it out lmk! :-)
Warlock is so poweful that really any race is fine. Voodu is drow just for flavor, but drow is a popular choice for warlock. Human is always a solid choice because of the extra feat. Some people like to do bladeforged. I would recommend whatever you love to play :-)
soo technically i can run a aura toon with the warlock? eg. barb/warlock - i take my core ravager needs and dump the other points to get the enlighten tree and auras, all while not putting points into my cha? this will need testing...
I think some people are doing aura melee builds, but since I don't play melees I can't really speak to this. I'd recommend checking out the warlock forums for better advice on this than you'll get from me. Just know that the aura starts ticking every 5 seconds and the more cores you have in enlightened spirit the faster the aura ticks, up to once every 2 seconds for t4 innate Celestial Spirit.
well i guess the main question is, would it be beneficial to make a multiclass melee build where you ignore the stats needed for the class. to take from the previous eg. 14 barb ravager/6 warlock, you essentially make the stats like a pure barb. meaning ignoring all the spellcasting. tyvm for the quick reply
+Wyvernjack96 not at all.... it's free to use (no sp cost) and hits mobs much farther away than cone of cold. You can just hold the attack button down and continuously shoot eldritch cones. It's rad :-) If you want to see a little more discussion of cone shape check out episode 21 of the Gingerlocks series.
Khyber. I literally got yelled at for making a LFG post for market quests yesterday. Some guy messaged me and said “your not gonna get a group for old content your just annoying everyone with that LFG post” 🤦♂️
By far the best warlock general info video. This is what I looked for, for months. Thank you.

I'm not really a build-focused kind of a player. I'm more of a content person, so not the best person to ask about builds. Can't say I've heard of anyone doing fvs/warlock tho.
thanks helps a lot!
woot! :-)
I have been looking at a blasting cone build on the forums and it uses mainly the soul eater tree. I was wondering... you said that the enlightened spirit tree was for melee... I really like the idea of that celestial spirit aura though but i want to be ranged how would that work?
also what do you think about using Aasimar as a race?
Hi AOT86,
Aasimar is not really an option for warlock because the stances/forms of the race are incompatible with warlock pact form and the enlightened spirit Celestial Spirit stance.
Voodu Spyce hey thanks for the quick reply appreciate the response
np :-)
i might be coming back to ddo :)
oh completly forgot they changed the enhancement line to talent trees... bla maybe not
it's way better. Our 3rd expansion is coming in October... Ravenloft. So that would be a good time to return :-)
You are correct that negative spell power is affected by nulification.
tks, sure about Utterdark Blast? i do search it on ddowiki and did not found nothing about it...
+Nación Mapache yup. Utterdark changes the force damage to evil damage. Evil damage is alignment damage, so is affected by a radiance item. Radiance boosts light and alignment spell power. Here is the wiki entry on radiance spell power ddowiki.com/page/Radiance_(spell_boost)
right many tks
@Voodu Spyce How did you get so much mrr prr and save throws?
Hey Nathaniel, I have all the details in my build post: www.ddo.com/forums/showthread.php/466496-Voodu-Warlock-A-Pure-Warlock-Enlightened-Spirit-Tank-Project-companion-thread
if you have specific questions after checking it out lmk! :-)
Alright thank you I was wondering how someone could have that godly saves Because I only got 40-50 Saves
Nathaniel Cassella lol I don't think my saves are that good, but I've never been much of a numbers person XD
lol
What is a good race for Warlock?
So cone shape is like the spell cone of cold?
+Wyvernjack96 not at all.... it's free to use (no sp cost) and hits mobs much farther away than cone of cold. You can just hold the attack button down and continuously shoot eldritch cones. It's rad :-)
If you want to see a little more discussion of cone shape check out episode 21 of the Gingerlocks series. This was the episode where I talked about how I fell in love with cone shape and I discuss it and demonstrate it further. Skip ahead to the 7:00 mark to jump past the intro ruclips.net/video/8A1kz0T2fnA/видео.html
I also use cone shape in episode 22-24 of the series.
Just so hard to level these days. No ones playing level 2-8
what server?
Khyber. I literally got yelled at for making a LFG post for market quests yesterday. Some guy messaged me and said “your not gonna get a group for old content your just annoying everyone with that LFG post” 🤦♂️
I’m trying to solo it but man this sucks. I’ve played the game since the beta test but with no new players leveling toons it’s very hard to come back.
That's so weird. Not to mention negative. I've had ppl make comments about stuff I post and it can be discouraging to say the least
I've been running with the same guild for 8 years and I think that makes a big difference for me and my DDO experience.
Agora o warlock é apenas uma triste lembrança de quão poderoso ele já foi
