  • The doyen of Odissi, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra was born on January 8, 1926 in Raghurajpur, Orissa. Kelucharan was a precocious child, he learnt to paint, sculpt and play the Khol drum at a very early age. He joined Gotipua troupes and folk theater groups when he was just nine.
    He was totally immersed in Odissi. He resurrected odissi when it was at the verge of extinction. In 1994 he set up an organisation, 'Srjan' to impart training to students in Odissi dance. Many famous classical dancers such as Sanjukta Panigrahi, Kukum Mohanty, Sonal Mansingh, Priyambada Mohanty, Minati Mishra and Bhartanatyam dancer Yamini Krishamurthy are disciples of guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.
    For his enormous contribution to Odissi, Kelucharan Mohapatra received many awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi award, 1966; Padma Shri, 1972; Padma Bhushan,1989; Padma Vibhushan, 2000; and Kalidas Samman from Madhya Pradesh government. To honor him the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra award was instituted in 1995. This annual award is given for the contribution in the field of art.
    This Odissi exponent passed away on April 7, 2004 in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa, leaving behind a league of Odissi dancers to continue the work started by him.

    A whole life of dedication to the lotus feet of Sri Sri Radha Krishna and hard work only can create such 'abhinaya'. Matchless.

    We lost such a great legend so early. What a masterly postures. No one can beat him. Personally, I miss him, though I am from Tamil Nadu.
    For dance language is no bar when it comes with expressions. Jayadev must have felt very happy to see his composition beautifully performed with lots of devotion.ra off to Odissa to have such a personality. India is proud of him.

    What does it all mean? Why is it important? Why does he appear so feminine? Like he's blushing, shy, coy.. I would be disappointed to find out there is no real substance, significance, intellectually or otherwise to what appears to me as simply an interesting musical pantomime. Please, enlighten me.

    • @mtarkes
      @mtarkes 4 года назад +3

      You are asking to be enlightened but dear it's an ocean of illumination, but how can anyone explain in a comment section something which is a culmination of a milleniums of soul seeking? This song is the heart of a religious movement of Hinduism called the Bhakti movement in which God's essence is believed to be experienced in the form of selfless love and sacrifice. Every worshipper becomes the metaphysical feminine (Radha) and God the metaphysical masculine (Krishna). Like a woman's love and dedication for her lover, so is the love between a soul and the Supreme Soul, ever-wanting, ever-waiting to be united in blissful eternity. Gita-Govinda is the name of the song and the dancer here assumes the role of Radha, the eternal lover of Krishna.

      I earnestly request you serach & read 'Gita govinda'.... Of which this is a part of... All of this is very transcendental(extra terrestial)..
      Once you read, you will be not the same person anymore..

      Here is another video with the lyrics and meanings. It's an ashtapadi from the Gita Govinda of the great Sanskrit poet Jayadeva.

      However, I find this one (one with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra) a better rendition and performance.
