I do believe this is what is what Henry Purcell would have heard in his day. It's an 'acting' voice, a mix of raw chest voice with falsetto, switching between the two when required. Also a great characterful face!
Yes it's very interesting and affecting, I have heard Andras Scholl sing this in pure countertenor which is very beautiful, but this approach is very striking and emotional.
Except for the original sheet music as written is sung an octave lower. It was Klaus Nomi that popularised the counter tenor interpretation of this piece, but it's supposed to be sung by a bass.
I am sorry, that I hear Gerald Lesne for the first time in my life. Absolutely stunning performance. I am touched into deepest❤
Why is he seating ?
@@teekey1754
Performance?
Standing up is better for "performance" when singing, especially classical music, and the whole scene doesn't look like it needs a "performer". @@weiterimtext8134
Likewise... I've only recently discovered Gerald. Incredible artist. We have lots to catch up on ! ❤
@@teekey1754 Because he sings in falsetto (counter-tenor), he doesn't have to stand.
Never have I heard such an intense and deep interpretation, the singer's sensitivity to the nuances in emotions, the ensemble with such pure and resonant sound! It's incredible!
Agreed! Klaus Nomi is also right up there in delivering an intense and beautiful rendition :)
Robert, that was exactly what I wanted to write. With this one finally there is one en par with Klaus Nomi.

Agreed!@@markusgasser3884
Your video is the only one that accurately expresses the heartbreaking emotions of the song's lyrics, “I'm cold,” “I don't want to wake up,” and “I want to die”. Most excellent.
Emotie
@@ferminsalaberrithe reason you think there are no good singers today is because you keep increasing and imposing your own demands on what constitutes a good singer, replacing the human and unique aspect of them and turning them into little more than an object to be used in your own mind. There are plentiful good and great singers all over the world, regardless and irrespective of your idealisms.
@@downfromkentuckeh i do wonder if you would apply the same reasoning to any other profesión such a mechanic, a doctor or an architect. Im trying to Talk about the Craft not about our personal preference which i totally understand.
This man looks 70. I hadn't imagined you could sing like that at that age. Mind blowing

Yes, one can…
In this sea of mediocrity and squalor that is RUclips, every now and then you come across some precious pearls
In this place also you Bach that not bad at all
Also chilling in the back of his Vocals is amazing me to bear witness to.
As a backwoods hillbilly, secretly a voracious consumer of art, beauty and music, and when it can be found, a delicious stew of all 3, I was warmed by this. It's 9 degrees in my house and there is ice on my windows inside. I'm quite comfortable under my quilts as I seek the glowing embers that kindle inner warmth such as this. Would enjoy him singing Arvo Parts heart in the Highlands.
Sounds nice.
Only in America will a person feel the need to be a “secret” consumer of art.
only in the mind of the beholder. @@perseus9428
Great comment, thank you! What els have you stumbled upon in RUclips that combines such art, beauty and music?

Greetings from the Netherlands!
This is one of the most beautiful versions I’ve ever heard ( and seen)…
@@unkobold Are you serious ??
@@lelya_doll Я послушал ! LOL !
A man of his distinguished age brings an entirely new level of conviction to performance.
💯
Une merveille absolue!
Now a day without hearing Gérard's voice is a day wasted... How could I live for the last 20 years without it?
My goodness!!! Only a real talent can combine maturity and youthful flexibility in such a dramatic way... painfully dramatic! Bravo!
Bravo!!!
I can feel the genius' fatigue. One of the most beautiful interpretations of the cold song ever heard!
Holy hell, I'm suddenly feeling emotions I wasn't even aware existed. If this isn't what true. genuine musical experience is about, I don't know what is!
Stessa cosa per me. Ho pianto e mi sono sentito sollevare in cielo. Ero in estasi e in disperazione allo stessa tempo. È come se volessi morire per vivere. Dio
Thanks! I was sent here by the Music Professor channel.
Sublime .
A brilliant interpretation, intense, without pretentious effects. In my opinion one of the best recordings of this piece that I have heard so far.
(and excellently recorded ensemble!)
That piano … !!! And the violinists pure perfection
Spectacular.
Danke 🙏.
BRAVOS MONSIEUR
JE N AI JAMAIS ENTENDU UNE SI BELLE INTERPRETATION
I have never heard this before. Purcell was a genius. What a performance! His harmonic progressions are astounding. and rather like those in Vivaldi's Four Seasons 'Winter'?:-)
Most probably the opposite as Purcell was earlier than Vivaldi.
@@TonyBittner-Collins Thanks. was lazy and didn't check. I shouldhave known anyway. Best wishes. :-(
wow. yes - Vivaldi's Winter surely must be inspired by this -
Merci
The best.
Una joya vigente y viviente.
Maravilloso Lesne.
Incredible performance. Thank you so much for this.
And that is REAL countertenor singing. Thank you.
Le grand Gérard Lesne !
In both Purcell's compositional gymnastics and the athletic performance by Gérard Lesne here lend incredible muscle and blistering intelligence to an unassuming melodic structure, empowered otherwise only by the harmonic crescendo.
I love this accomplishment and salute the musicians! Fantastic recording that I will save and savor for the future.
«What Power art thou, Who from below, hast made me rise unwillingly and slow from beds of everlasting snow» the beauty of these words!! I remember hearing Klaus Nomi (RIP) sing that in the early 80s and immediately falling in love with this aria.
Truly wonderful ❤
THIS SINGER IS PERFECTION.
This never gets bad. Can just hear it over and over and over again.
NICE
Just incredible!
Merveilleux, monsieur Lesne, merveilleux!
Merci, Monsieur Lesne.
All I can say is thank you!
Sublime! Envy the audience.
Fantastisch!
wow very very impressive - masterly performance - thanks for posting
the best version ever heard 💕 thank you Lesne
beautiful
Mr. Lesne, your voice is wonderful, I have been listening to your performance for several days and I am more and more surprised every moment. This performance is truly memorable.. and the best wishes for you.
What an exceptional performance!
Very beautiful and very inspiring for me, as I am a countertenor as well.
I have heard interpretations that I technically prefer, but god damn this gentleman absolutely nails the musical theatre aspect. Like his whole body shapes itself to get the exact pitch and nuance called for. Fantastic
Certainly this is the best rendition I have both seen or heard.
The song itself is indeed genius. I love the opening chord progessions that resolve in a manner evoking a sense of coldness and awakening.
Wow! I've never heard the before. This is such a haunting and expressive performance. Thank you!
And again. Artistry at its most sublime. Bravo sir. 😎😎😎
Ah, se eu tivesse a voz desse senhor! Magnífico!👏👏👏
Gorgeous!
Il est fantastique, il touche au cœur. Admiration 👑
This is the most amazing version of the cold song I ever heard.
Whao! Impressionnant et magnifique !!
Sublime !
I have watched many versions and they are incredibly varied and enjoyable, but this is just stunning. All round! .The treatment is superb. :-)
Merci.
Haunting, soaring, clear, so beautifully sung and played. Thank you
interpretation plus forte que beaucoup d'autres! Je ne connaissais pas cet artiste merci!!
What a moving reading! I’m now a new fan. Well, better late than never, I guess.
Merveilleux, magnifique, sublime !!!
Just beautiful.....
Magnifique.
Breathtaking...I'm speechless...
I cannot think of another song like this in any discipline, staccato yet fluid, unearthly yet so full of earthly passion.
