Perhaps we first had to get used to the sound or associate fond memories with it. Because even though synths have evolved, many of us still prefer the sounds of the earlier models, especially from the 80s.
It is an amazing synthesizer. I bought mine on eBay about a month ago. It is an AMAZING synthesizer. So many synths take after this legend and the DX7 is where it all began. The Montage is a beautiful synth too and the fact that it has an amazing FM engine based on ( a bit more advanced) on the DX7 says something about how iconic and legendary the DX7 really is. I have many keyboards but the DX7 is my favorite. I have a DX7s as well and I really prefer the sound of the original!

The piano sound he's getting here reminds me of the sound he recorded on the 1984 LP "Village Life" with Foday Musa Suso, although on that recording, he was playing a rare Yamaha DX1.
Yes, because Hammond organ's tone wheels do nothing else but produce sine waves, and so do the DX7's operators. Algorithm 32 is simply a 6 sine wave mix. Sure, Hammond has 9 sine waves controlled with drawbars, and DX7 has only 6. But the DX7 has many more level and frequency ratio combinations than the Hammond, and millions of envelope combinations, so think of the DX7 algorithm 32 as a super Hammond organ with envelopes, transposable and tunable tone wheels, plus you can modulate the sine waves with each other in the other algorithms. I mean, sky is the limit. DX7 has practically an infinite sonic possibility.
I love my dx7 and I love Herbie!!!! Even though the keyboard is about 15 years older than I am it has stood the test of time and is still very affordable 😎
Herbie Hancock
The model type of the DX7 that Herbie Hancock is using is one of the earlier variants of what many would call the "Mark I" model. You can tell this because the back banel doesn't have the synthesizer's full name; it just says "DX7" where most today say "Yamaha DX7." But then again, this video was shot sometime in early-mid 1983, so the DX7 was still undergoing many development processes.
Tintamare was a show in France and back then, in Eastern Canada, we couldn't watch it, but, for that show to pull strings and have Hancock show up, speaks volumes to the cultural importance of the show.
Actually I went to see a concert at Berklee a couple years ago and one of the sets, featuring faculty, had a DX7, a funny thing was that the word "fusion" was never mentioned lol! great concert though and DX7s are DX7s and as DX7s they belong in certain kinds of music
yeah and like I get that he's got to translate what mr hancock is saying, but he just like straight up interrupts him. whole thing just comes out as rude
Cómo me gustaría tocar el Yamaha DX7! Todo un acierto de ingeniería! Este teclado estuvo en manos de tecladistas y bandas más exitosas de los años '80.
Only the CZ series comes close to making most of the DX7 sounds and those are more that 10 years old. A ten year Casio isn’t making much to be proud of if were were objective and honest.
2:30 He said "actually this has a pretty good piano sound right here". I'm watching this video in 2021, and I'm like nah bro. Hahaha. But I wouldn't mind owning one, though. 😎
He mentioned hiring and working with such people in his autobiography. He goes into detail. It's a good read. He comes across as a very gracious and kind person. Very different than the miles Davis autobiography.
No, I'm not going to admit that Chick Corea and George Duke sounded cheesy. Of all the things that sound cheesy, that's who you pick on? These incredible musicians, these paragons of technique? If early fusion jazz sounds cheesy to you, what sounds sophisticated?
Namedrop? Isn't that when you say you know the guy? "So me and Chick were hanging out once and ..." "You and who?" "Oh my buddy, Chick Corea." Isn't that what a namedrop is? Lol.
Frank Jacobson They are all preset. Every DX7 you came across in the early 80's has these sounds: electronic organ 1, pipe organ 1, clav 1, electric bass 1, electric piano 1. I can tell you the exact names of the sounds if you're really interested; give me five minutes to turn my DX7 on, place the ROM 3 A cartridge in its slot and transcribe the name of the those unmistakeable patches for you!

What he says at 4:17-5:18 is such a beautiful thing to say about music. It's a beautiful analogy and a beautiful idea.
Yeah, and on top of synths being brand new, the frequency modulation in the one in front he’s playing on was really new and cutting edge.
Perhaps we first had to get used to the sound or associate fond memories with it. Because even though synths have evolved, many of us still prefer the sounds of the earlier models, especially from the 80s.
Tip: his biography is AMAZING. The Audible version is read by himself. One of the best bios I've ever listened to.

I looked through it in a store, and it seemed terrific. I really should read it in full.

The D50 does it better!!
bs
It makes sense considering a tonewheel organ and a dx7 both work by generating sine waves, just one is digital and the other isn't
Yes, because Hammond organ's tone wheels do nothing else but produce sine waves, and so do the DX7's operators. Algorithm 32 is simply a 6 sine wave mix. Sure, Hammond has 9 sine waves controlled with drawbars, and DX7 has only 6. But that came out in 86, its bound to be better than something from 83.
