5 plus ways to say 'I don't understand' in French. While saying 'je ne comprends pas' means 'I don't understand', it's always best to elaborate a bit, as simply stating you don't understand is likely to leave your interlocutor confused as to what precisely it is you didn't understand. Is it what they just said? Is it everything they said? Is it what they said a while ago? Don't you understand because you can't hear them or because you lack the necessary vocabulary? Could you please explain the difference between "Pourriez-vous répéter s'il vous plaît" and "Pouvez-vous répéter s'il vous plaît"?
Pourriez-vous = Could you (conditional), Pouvez-vous = Can you (present tense). Hope this helps :)

I found it funny how saying what could be considered rude in France.
In England it is also considered a course way of speaking, especially by the older generations.
If I ever said what instead of pardon to my mother born in the 40’s she would reply ‘Watt made engines’. Referring to the Scottish inventor James Watt that invented the steam engine in the 1700’s.
