Looking forward to this one. It's going to answer a lot of questions for me.
Great! I hope it does. It caused me a few more questions actually... lol
Thank you again for the video. Chuck it looks like the 20 inch barrels doing pretty good. It would be nice to see you do that test with your reloads.God Bless.@AlaskanBallistics
@sugargoldy will do at some point before I switch the ar10 barrel to a lightweight 308 barrel
AB. Good video. Thanks for all of your work putting it together. Take care.
Thanks Bobcat!
Based solely on the data presented in this video, and of course I realize it is a small sample size, that Kimber has the best bore of all the rifles. For it to produce those 3 shots so close in velocities, that says something about the quality of barrel also. I'd be interested in 20 rounds through that rifle, same lot number Barnes ammo. If it did well, that tells me that's the Barnes ammo is better than I thought and the variety of rifles out there are more the issue and not the ammo. I have several rifles with high end barrels that have controlled factory ammo better than I thought compared to some of my factory production rifles, but the Tikkas still do a great job.
By the way, new ammo from Barnes:
152 grain LRX 280 Ackley Improved VORTEX (available now)
160 grain LRX 7PRC VORTEX (being manufactured but not available yet)
You cannot buy these bullets in this weight for handloading (yet). Barnes made them exclusively for their ammo.
Unfortunately for Barnes, the Federal 155 grain Terminal Ascent 280 Ackley Improved ammo is cheaper
The federal terminal ascent b is a great bullet
👍👍 thanks Chuck, I like the chronograph videos.
Thank you Lance
Tikka 6.5 CTR Numbers w/ 20 Inch mid contour factory barrel.
Hornady ELD-X 143Gr 2700 (second highest node) W/ H4350
I experimented with hand loads with the Hornady CX solids 130Gr, I was able to reach almost 3000 fps using the Hornady Superformance. I suspect if you track some of this stuff down you will find that 128 Barnes break 3000 on most of those platforms, making the expansion from a 6.5 creed much more viable. I planned to revisit this with the 120Gr Cx's but I prefer the performance of the Barnes LRX 127gr for these speeds.
That combination might just be the sweet spot for solids expanding with this 6.5creed.
Thanks for the Video!
I barely get over 3000 with the 6.5x284.
I just went and tested a couple different 6.5 loads today and I was getting 2710 average with a 35 fps extreme spread and 10 fps SD on the barnes LRX BT. Out of a 16" Q fix bolt action with a hux works flow through can.
Nice!
Interesting results. Especially the 20, 22 & 24 are all basically the same. Brother were you right about the AR10 losing quite a bit. Thank you.
Thank You!
I think those CM's with the 1 in 7" twist are harder to make go faster. I'd choose the Tikka as well.
@fabulousoffroaddesigns5080 not a bad choice! Godspeed and good hunting to you and yours my friend.
I have a 20” Ruger American compact version in 6.5 creedmoor. I recently got a Garmin chronograph and tested these 127 LRX factory loads. 6 shot average was 2812. I figured it would be 2600.
That's good
Saw crossroads with Joshua Philip talkibg about artic warfare of thought it'd make a decent vid suggestion. Whats some good Artic battle rifles/ things that would matter in a build for Artic weather.
I’m getting 2600 out of 147 handloads with 24”. Thing is gnats ass accurate with single digit es/sd. H4350 is the truth.
Nice !
Chrono lives matter I like that Garman small and out of the way I've seen too many chronos murdered on videos this is a great test as far as data but also shows same ammo in different guns can act so different as if every firearm has its own DNA
Exactly
I’ve tested the Barnes factory stuff in my 6.5cm t3x superlite against the doubletap 127 lrx load. Both give me about a 0.8-0.9” group, Barnes load at about 2,835 and the doubletap at 2,930 (sd was 14), no signs of excess pressure.
That's good. I've not had good luck with doubletree ammo as fast as velocities.
@@AlaskanBallistics I was chasing velocity with a few different copper bullets and I had heard mixed reviews about DT but I found a cheap box to try out- thankful my barrel seemed to like them. That bullet, at 2,930fps, up at 6k-7,500’ elevation is an awesome deer rifle well past 400yd which is about all I feel my skills are up to.
@nielskrejcir5025 great choice then! Godspeed and good hunting!
Very interesting video. That 28” barrel doesn’t feel so long with a break action. On a bolt gun I wouldn’t want more than a 26” How’s 6.5 creedmoore recoil in that TC?
6.5 creedmoor doesn't recoil, not in any of these guns.
@@AlaskanBallistics Thats a nice advantage. Low recoil and fantastic accuracy. Thanks for doing this video it was nice to see the differences between the different barrel lengths.
Hi, as promised quick update on the 300 WM 190 grain ABLR handload with RL17. Second highest load tested with 72.6 grains gave the best precision and SD. 24” barrel, 3140 ft/s
Nice!
@@AlaskanBallistics what do you think about the speeds? No pressure signs, but it’s fire formed brass and the bullet is way further out than SAAMI spec. The computer model predicted 150 ft/s less 😁
Yes that's quite nice velocity
That 20" barreled Kimber's velocity was impressive. Is it pretty accurate?
I've not shot it much yet
@@AlaskanBallistics
That Kimber with a can would be a great stalking setup. My buddy is thinking 6.5prc 20" and a can. He hunts and long range targets with 2 300 Win. Mag. as of now. The lightweight 300 Win. Mag is a carbon fiber barrel, light stock, light scope and it is a tack driver........but even with a really good break brutal on both ends. I figure a 6.5 prc at 20" with a can would give more than likely 6.5 creed 24 inch velocities or around that.
@kentuckywindage222 I don't know. All 6.5prc really need a 26" to achieve factory velocities. He might do better with a 300prc that short
How about a velocity test comparing a Tikka vs whatever you can scrounge in the same caliber barrel & length? My Tikka seems slow which I have heard is common.
Well that's because tikka is usually a 22 inch barrel for long action calibers instead of a 24"
My tikka 270 is about 50fps slow with federal terminal ascent 136gr. Just did a short on it
Still missing my HMR that was stolen...missing the Steiner glass that was on it even more...lol.
I think mine had a 22" barrel.
That sucks!
It’d be great to retest these rifles at the other ranges to see if that was causing lower velocities
Well I didn't film it, but I got the same velocity with the kimber the other day, maybe 10fps more. No rain, maybe 200ft up in elevation.
Great caliber if it just wasn't unobtainium during a shortage.
True, but it came back pretty quick here

Nice theme music. I wonder who wrote it?
🤦♂️
It's _AI generated_ vanilla junk pop music free for use.
Lol no I wrote it. That's my other channel commenting on it
@@AlaskanBallistics I know, I was just joking around, next time I see you at Sterlings or out jonesville I'll have to mention your _AI generated music channel_ again for sure😉.
Lol thanks I didn't get it. Sorry. I don't shoot at jonesvolle road
Chuck are you a fan of the 6.5 Cr compared to the .308 Win?
Yes and no. Depends on the use.
@@AlaskanBallistics Heavier game at shorter distances .308? Caribou at 700 yards 6.5?
No Tikka T3x? Fun vid
@larsrodbok1285 only one I have is in .270 Winchester
My Kimber Hunter and Kimber Hunter pro are both 22 inch barrels I didn't know that they made any kimber hunters in 20-inch
Yeah this older one is.
I bought one when they released and it's in 22". Didn't see the shorter option, maybe it was discontinued immediately?
@briansmith2616 maybe. This one is definitely shorter
@@AlaskanBallistics Nice to see the velocities hold up across the different lengths.
@briansmith2616 agreed
I have a theory (untested) that a faster twist rate slows the bullet down. Does the Aero Precision have a significantly higher twist rate?
No I think all the twist rate are 1 in 8
Not a theory. It has been tested by others. Generally, the faster the twist, the slower the velocity. But, many companies that tested it found it's not substantial.
4 Inches diffrence and basicly no change in verlocity how can that be...
Efficient powder charge
Is that a std mag in that 400?
Man it hangs down. I dont
Like that..
400?
The hmr?
WOW UTUBE IS FUNKY!!
Mornin Chuck. Somehow and obviously, this comment was not for you. Sorry Brother!
@cw2a lol okay. But I always like magazines that hang low with more rounds
