  • Is PSVR2 with PC Adapter better than Quest 3 for iRacing & Automobilista 2? In this video I am testing out the the Sony PSVR2 PC Adapter that allows you to use you PSVR2 headset on a PC. I will be showing how it works for sim racing games like iRacing and Automobilista 2 and comparing it with the Meta Quest 3. Both headsets sell for around the same price and and both offer a different experience with each having their own advantages and disadvantages. This will be my initial impression of PSVR2 for PC Sim Racing.

    I agree with you from a performance perspective, it's pretty much a wash between both. In the end, I switched to PCVR2 from Quest 3 for three reasons:
    1). headset weight - to me, the PSVR2 being lighter doesn't cause a weight distribution issue between front and back of the unit. On my Q3, I didn't use a battery back because it isn't comfortable leaning back in my sim rig with a bulge at the back of my head. I can play longer on the PSVR2 as it's less strenuous on my neck. The cable isn't an issue for me as I also used a link cable on my Q3. 2). The ritual of setting up the Q3 for PC gaming - turn on headset, plug in link cable, enable Oculus Link, start Oculus Tray Tool -- at least 5 mins to have everything up and running (and if I skip a step and have to restart the routine, even more). With PSVR2 - start Steam VR, turn on headset -- 20 secs max.
    3). Since I primarily use VR for sim racing, I don't even need to pick up the controllers. A couple mouse clicks and I'm driving, while with my Q3, you need to use the controllers to navigate the Oculus menus ... and no annoying pop-ups when the controllers lose tracking in the middle of a game!
    Long story long, there's a convenience factor that the PSVR2 introduces vs the Q3 that I don't think a lot of reviewers are really talking about.

      @MrNangu 4 месяца назад +3

      Just to point out you don't need the controllers in the Qest to play sim games, you can navigate the interface to enable link by using hand tracking.

    Use open XR and open composite and bypass Steam VR ; Steam VR is a performance hog and you will get anything from 20-30% performance increases .If you are using VD for your Quest 3 use VDXR and open composite, I go wireless on the quest 3 for sim racing using VD it looks better than quest link, to clear the lenses distortion on VR head sets you need to run them at 150% resolution or god mode in VD.

    You are one of the few people I've heard talk about the potential of GT7 in VR on PS5 Pro. I think people are not aware how good that would look if they are able to run it at native res and framerate. GT7 is the undisputed king in terms of car models, materials (especially interiors) and lighting. The only caveat is that it does require PD to update the game for this, which is not a given.

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  4 месяца назад +6

      GT7 made me a believer in the ability for consoles to run Racing Sims. Also, they have an advantage when it comes to VR implementation. For one, the simplicity of using it on a console and two, everyone is using the same equipment. They can optimize the heck out of it and push it to the limit that the system can handle. With PC, they have no idea what system people are using, so they need to give you 100 settings to play with and figure it out yourself. And then, you still don't know if it will run good.

    The latency is way lower in the PSVR2 in 120hz but I think the image and lens were way worse than the Reverb G2. This difference in both points should be even more extreme with the Quest as it has high latency but better lenses. The latency is very underrated… It is lower than my 390hz display (I hit 150ms average in humanbenchmark).

    First, I own a Quest 3 and had the device long before this PSVR adaptor was announced. I enjoy the Quest 3 for my SIM racing far as quality and performance. Note: I have a PC with an I7 processor and use a RTX-3080TI for my GFX card. All SIM racing games work well with my PC.
    I feel both the Quest 3 and the PSVR headsets are a great buy and should both perform very well with SIM racing. Now the PSVR maybe a little better suited for night racing in leagues because of the OLED lenses and give you better black levels. I guess the FOV is a little wider and the lens resolutions are a little better with the PSVR.
    All that said, I will still stay with my Quest 3 for my VR gaming. I have no need to purchase another VR headset at this time just for some minor bump ups in the specs. I am interested in seeing what the Quest 4 has to offer in specifications which is not supposed to be released for 1-2 years- that is if they make this product.
    I have tried several different VR products over the years and learned the Pros and Cons of each device. My previous VR headset was the Rift S and I look for VR headsets that have a nice FOV and a large lens sweet spot for viewing games.
    For those that don't have a VR headset or have money to burn. I would say either VR headset would be great to have for PC gaming. Just do your homework and watch allot of videos on the VR products.
    Last thing. Don't worry, there will be other newer VR products in the near future which maybe better than the Quest 3 and PSVR headsets. Developers are always trying to outdo each other in the VR Technology. Just think a month ago we were talking about the PIMAX Crystal light products. VR is moving very fast in this Technology.
    Thanks for your great video. Take care

I've tried using it with a cable and even invested in a Wi-Fi 6E 6GHz router to test it with Virtual Desktop. While the visuals are clear, there are still occasional stutters. On top of that, the poor black levels are very noticeable when racing at night, which is quite annoying. That said, it's a great product for everything else. Hm interesting. Ive purchased a PSVR2 at first and after 2 days ive returned that one because it simply wasnt good, like the whole material chosen and manufacturing quality is awful. Colors and Contrast were totaly fine, OLED is superior in that regard but the lenses have had such a weird film grain, it was just ... meh. I picked up a Quest 3 instead and in terms of pretty much every single aspect (except it is a LCD), that VR is superior.
    What annoyed me mostly about PSVR2 was that none of those Playstation menues are designed for VR, it was extremly unsharp, text was a pure eye killer in terms of sharpness, the sweetspot of the headset was extremly small, no eyetracking, no controls with the VR, had to pick up the normal controller constantly and on top of that ive never had any kind of passthrough when needed, making it a extremly annoying device to use.
    It always took me up to 5 minutes to re-setup after a break, had to clean glasses, had to clean lenses... like that sunprotection literally causes sweat and fat and that is hitting glasses with ease after taking it off and then returning into it, the glasses would lay down the fat on them onto the lenses and so forth. Then geting the perfect fit of the VR on my head was a mess every single time, the sweetspot beeing so awful and the entire playstation menues beeing an unreadable pile of crap... nah.
    Ingame it was "Okay", but let me say it that way: if GT7 was coming to PC, then the console would be a useless piece of hardware, next to the PSVR2.
    The whole feeling of GT7 is literally the solely standpoint of Sony, as of why PSVR2 is a thing at all, because the hardware isnt capable of using native res etc.. neither is Sony providing the required qualities for VR. Its just a brand, with chinese made products and an uppricing of about 60% for sth that is way worse than the competitors.

    • @SargonDragon
      @SargonDragon 4 месяца назад +3

      The difference you're feeling is real and meaningful. The remote streaming on the Quest 3 adds ~50ms of latency versus VR headsets using DisplayPort (including the PSVR2). It seems like many gamers can not discern this, but it's definitely there, and it affects game play results whether they notice it or not.
      In a racing simulator, it will feel to the driver like the car's suspension responds just slightly slower. We're used to adjusting to the car. It's what you do as a driver. But this slowness is coming from the Quest 3, not the simulation.
      The difference won't really affect your lap times in a way you'll be able to detect. The driver adjusts to it, so you'll still be able to achieve the same fastest lap. When nothing unexpected happens, the slower reaction time doesn't matter. You just put in your control inputs slightly earlier.
      The difference comes when you have to react to unexpected things. So when you're dueling another car or when the car slides unexpectedly. A faster reaction time is obviously going to give you an edge in that case.
      So to me, between the Quest 3 and PSVR2... they're pretty close in terms of overall display quality, but the difference in latency makes the PSVR2 the clear winner for simracing if you're competitive. I mean, this is actually something which _will_ materially affect your race results from time to time.

    Nice Cas, Lot of people are mentioning the FOV being noticeably bigger in the psvr2 on 1st person games. Does it make much difference in Sims? As you'd think that would be where you would want it as big as possible.. other than that like you say its really colourful areas and night time scenes people are noticing biggest difference, night time race would be a good test of the contrast, other than that i don't think its a massive difference

      On the psvr2 I first played with ipd and noticed there was a nice gain between min-max ipd setting. At this stage I found psvr2 fov was larger than my pimax5k+ in small setting, somewhere between small and normal setting.
      Then I remembered that psvr2 top-right button to set the eye-screens/lenses distance and WOW, the effect on fov is much bigger than for ipd setting. With ipd set to my real idp and screens/lenses set to the closest to my eyes the fov is huge, similar to the pimax 5k+ normal setting or even a bit wider, which is already quite large.
      I wasn't expecting such a wide fov with the psvr2, I'm very happy I have bought the pc adapter. Need more testing due to performance issues (3080 here too) but the black/colors/contrast gain is so huge that I'm already almost decided to sell my 5k+ and keep the psvr2 as my only pcvr hmd.

You can get away with lower end GPUs with something like a Rift S due to its lower resolution, but if you want to push better headsets, you need better GPUs and CPUs. It's what makes GT7 on PS5 with PSVR2 so amazing. What they accomplised on the console and you not having to touch a single setting, it's hard to get the experience on PC with any lower end setup.

    In GT7, the start-miles-behind-in-an-OP-car-and-blast-past-everyone format of the entire single-player campaign is atrocious, and for custom racing, there's no custom championship, no practice or qualifying, the AI don't use full throttle, rubberbanding STILL can't actually be turned off, you can't show/hide the HUD while driving (without having to go through a million menu buttons), you can't customise the HUD at all, most of the dashboard data in most cars don't actually work and are just for show, the rain is invisible, and the 'artificial intelligence' have zero intelligence or racing skill.
    I could probably go on! I'm just so ready to move over to racing games that are actually racing games. Sport mode is the only decent gameplay in GT7 (besides a few of the missions) and even that is super limited on content. THANK YOU SONY for liberating PSVR2-using sim racers from GT7!

    I notice in iRacing that even though it is set to 90fps that on suzuka you spend large parts of it at sub 90 fps, i think i saw it in the low 70s, how have you got it running smooth still, when i drop below 90 it gets very choppy straight away! Any tips?
    Also what are you using to record from the psvr2?
    Great video btw! Subscribed!

      I was using OBS, which always effects my frames in iRacing when I record. After the video, I ran an MX-5 race at Tsukuba, and it was a solid 90 the entire time. I don't remember if I might have changed any settings in the resolution setting it in iRacing after the recording in the video. I captured a lot of different iRacing clips, so not sure what settings were used with the footage in this one but OBS always seems to effect it. Recording with Nvidia GeForce usually has less impact.

      Did you know if you xhange the encoding on OBS to software i think it stops the choppiness, its set as standard i think to use the gpu, so it fights for resource with the game, i read that somewhere and when i changed it, there was a significant improvement!!

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  4 месяца назад

      Yeah, I had it set to that, and when I started doing more GT7 recordings, I switched it back to Nvidia setting, which affects frames more for iRacing. I don't think I ever changed it back when I recorded the iRacing clips.

    pincushion distortion?

      @@thecasualracinggamer Fresnel lenses distort the picture. This is called pincushion distortion. Easy to look up. VR software compensates for this by rendering the image with an inverse barrel distortion. The downside of rendering with this barrel distortion is that the render resolution has to be higher than the native resolution of the headset. For most headsets, the optimal render resolution is 1.4 times the native resolution. The 100% resolution setting in SteamVR likely takes this into account. By using something like 60% resolution, you are in effect heavily undersampling the headset.

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  4 месяца назад

      I got the number of 68% after searching it up, and that should be compensating for the barrel distortion. I thought maybe you were talking about something else.
      At 100% resolution in Steam, it said something like it was over 4,000 x 4,000 each eye.

    GT7 on PSVR2 is still the reigning king when it comes to racing sims and the Quest 3 doesn't even come close. The PSVR2 is simply the best headset available right now and as developers and modders begin working on PC games with the headset and haptic controllers in mind, it will remain that way.

      @@MetalDeathHead I don't notice it and from what I've heard from other expert streamers on the subject, all the newer games out for the PSVR2 don't have it anymore. I remember it was a problem for a lot of the first games that were released for it. but I didn't really notice it then, either.

      I'm not sure I agree with you about PSVR2 being the best headset right now for sim racing, but you definitely have a right to your opinion. It's definitely a good headset, though. Also, newer games will still have mura. It's not dependent on software but something physically in the headset. In GT7, I have learned to look past it, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

    If you're not comparing through a lens, this kind of video doesn't help

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  4 месяца назад

      Through the lens is not an accurate representation of what you see either. Cameras alter images and colors. It also smooth things out and focus through things that your eyes might see. There is a lot that gets altered.

    I run a rtx 4090 and it is light years beyond the rtx 3090 for VR. In Automoblista,2, I run all settings maxed. In steamVR, I run 150% supersampling. This runs okay in steamVR link at foveated rendering about half because that's how I have it. But in Virtual Desktop, I run godlike visuals rtx4090, wifi 6 system maxed out bandwith for no pixelation, sharpness maxed, Snapdragon sharpening. in the headset, maxed out brightness and increased contrast in quest 3 and my eyes do hurt from brightness. Or I leave the quest 3 brightness maxed and in virtuaDesktop I have switched brights brigther and dark darker switch. There is no other headset that can match the clarity, no compression. I know what OLED looks like but the clarity is lifelike especially in automobilista 2. I run fps lowest settings and its fine. I don't notice difference running 90fps. Their is no other headset that can match virtual desktop sharpness technique combined with the sharpening chipset on the headset. The Visual is like 12k resolution per eye. No visual distortion from pancake lenses either. NONE! That sharpening technique is definitely godlike with no artifacts and this is due to the WIFI 6 system I have here at home and pc ethernet linked to the mesh wifi6 system. I'm still looking for a PSVR2 to pc linkbox so I can try it out but I know the only thing that I'll like is the OLED display and I know the resolution will suck! Without the foveated rendering and the Eye tracking of the PS5, it will definitely suck.
