this is a story from the First World War (the Serbian flag isn't the Russian flag upside down anymore, but it was during WW1) a bunch of Muslim Russian conscripts wanting to defect to the Ottomans approached the position with their flag upside down to show their intent to defect, but the Turkish soldiers just thought they were Serbs and gunned them all down
