@larson1988 You have to quit the "explorer.exe" process in the Task Manager before starting Aoe2. Be aware that your desktop, taskbar and all open explorer windows will be killed by doing this. After playing Aoe2, you can start "explorer.exe" again by pressing ctrl, shift and esc simultaneously to open the Task Manager. Click on File > New Task ... and enter "explorer.exe" (without quotation marks). Your desktop and taskbar will appear again.
Ohh, the memories! back then when MS w/ Ensemble Studios developed masterpieces, it was before they ruined everything with their entry on the console market with the Xbox, with Bungie and Halo. Back then when developers didn't need flashy graphics in order to make a great game. For the record, I'm not a big of RTS games, but I still play this game and its soundtrack is charming me as in the first day.
@wangotangowhoo1234 if aviable, check your cd-device. there has to be some kind of "run-button", next to the open/close button. if there isn^t such a button, go to the in-game menu, switch your music off-and on again. the first tip always helped me, buit if you do not have a run-button just check the in-game menu. hope i helped you. Man, I remeber how I always wanted the age IV buildings but rarely could build them, remember how surrounded my "kingdom" with walls, how I always left a narrow line of woods so the enemy soldiers couldnt come from there, the Asia Campaign which I've never beat, camel riders, apple gathering, fishing..Jeez, that was one happy childhood I had..

i was first introduced to AoE II by a friend (i still remember him fighting the green vikings). But at the time, AoE Age of Kings was a brand new game :D my mom didn't want to buy it, too expensive, so she bought me Age of Empires I Gold Edition instead ! since then i never let down the series. on my opinion Aoe II > Aoe I > Aoe III, but all were great games.
@Osmiken13 you have to find the main game folder for example WinXp= C:(harddrive)/programs/age of empires/ music or something like that Win7 = C: (harddrive)/programs(86x)/age of empires/ in to the music or ingame music folder u have to look at the folder once you located the AOE 2 folder
I just brought the collector's edition after losing my original copy since i saw that they had a surplus of them which came with the first and second one with all expansions for each, this was probably the first game i ever played and i will probably never cease to play it.
@Khild565 well playing it once at a friends house and trash talking it is pretty low, and i'm assuming thats what happened. age of empires requires a brain to play it. halo does too, but the "grapix" meet your standards i guess.

I recently went to the store with a buddy, we bought 2 copies of AoE 2 cause we both loved the game back in the days, and obviously we battled it out for ages. Of empires. It is still as much fun as back when this game came out.

That with the music isn't true. I have the AoE2 version from 1999 and the AoE Collection with all four games and in every version of AoE2 it doesn't play any background music

People who want to play AOE2 on Windows 7, just download the "AOE II TC W7 color FIX" from the internet. It should fix the color problem if you are encountering it.

So far, I have only played the standard random games. This one kind of makes me nervous, but in a good way. More like a serious alertness. This is the best strategy game ever, simple with easy control and lots of options. I only have the ps2 version but still beats command and conquer 3

haha we built a trebuchet in my yard when i was younger and played these songs while we did it. it was fucking sick. and the 30 ft catapult worked!

U have to chose the play from CD option when you insert the disc, then go to library (i think) then click on record music
You can rip the music from the folder where AoE2 is installed, and you can play it on Media Player while you play.
