- After WWII you could buy a P52 mustang for $1k. Now they are $3million. This is the modern day P51. I was going to buy a new car but decided instead to buy this plane. My rational is that I can buy a car anytime anywhere. But this, this is special. Robert Frost “The road not taken”, “two roads diverge in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference”
I flew 2 Lear 24BXR's and have over 500 hours in them. I can safely say, flying them is the most fun I've had with my pants on.
You should fly one buck naked, then.
$2M annual op costs fotr what, 400 hrs?
?????????????????? Who are you speaking to?
@@edthayres9175 said lear 24.
Said lear 24 of corst.
Love the 23/24/25 series Learjet! These need to be saved!!! Nothing compares to these old insane rocket ships. 😍 Thank you!
I totally agree. That is why I purchased this one.
Love the old school Lears
Yes they were/are awesome.
Of course there is a reason the plane cost less than a new Corolla. To get it legal to fly will cost $500,000 and before you can fly it you have to get type rated in the 20 series, assuming you meet all of the pre-requisites for the type rating, and will also need a type rated co-pilot you can leave the ground. Once you get it legal, expect to pay around $100,000/year to keep it in operational status, assuming you never fly it and add $3,000/hour for every hour you do.
My goal when I got out of college was to own and fly a jet before I was 50. Beat it. Bought a Lear 24D when I was 42. What a hoot to fly! Most exciting airplane I have ever owned.
I used to watch them on TV as a kid. I had a chance to buy one and I did. It's way cooler than most other things
Most beautifull lear ever built
Congratulations!!
Congratulations my friend...I have always said. if I ever got ANY ONE of those Lear-Jet models. I would LOOK into a flight instructor who was a former TOP GUN/or Air Force pilots. because those Learjets are Top of the line Private Jets, and I want the BEST to teach me how to control and fly it properly.
CONGRATULATIONS ¡¡¡¡ Just fly safe and enjoy it . Greetings from Mexico City
I flew #115, such fun! My first trip as a co-pilot in it was flying Jimmy Buffett. 🙂
I like the scene in one of the In Like Flint movies where James Coburn goes to the airport to fly his Learjet. As he's getting into the jet the mechanic in coveralls tells him, "The ash trays were full so we got you a new jet." He turns around and we can see that it's Bill Lear. FUNNY !
I saw that movie!
I just looked up that movie and saw the part. It's on RUclips. Cool.
@@itsathaithing The whole movie is fun but that part was hilarious.
Watch V1 cuts. They are a handful! Immediate full rudder and aileron. If flying at high altitudes, which you will do for fuel economy with the CJ’s, be ever mindful of the very short “Duration Of Useful Consciousness”. Practice sweeping on your O2 mask and know your O2 Controls. I do not remember if this has the O2 valve upfront like the Lear 35 does. That valve has to be open. Think of the accident with the famous golfer. You do not want over speed the aircraft. The wing only has 13 degrees of sweep so you get a large center of pressure shift causing the nose to tuck down as you approach the trans-sonic range. The ailerons develop aileron snatch. The yoke will be doing wild gyrations. If I remember the drill correctly. Close the throttles, do not apply speed brakes(they make the nose tuck more), lower the landing gear(you will shed the gear doors), pull on the control column from the below the yoke. The gyrations can break wrists. Have fun…
XR Systems Description
The Dee Howard Cyompany XR modification to the Gates Learjet Model 24 contains eight functional modifications.
A. Reduced Drag Modification
This consists of two main changes. The first of these is a wing fairing and glove system which recontours the wing for improved pressure distribution. The second is a redesign of the pylon and engine nacelle structures to reduce high Mach flow through the channel.
B. Auxiliary Fuel and Fuel Vent Systems
The wing glove is a wet design which increases fuel capacity by approximately 80 gallons.
The fuel supply, vent and indicating systems have been modified to incorporate this additional capacity
C. Angle of Attack System
A Teledyne stall warning and angle of attack indicating system has been installed. It provides discrete left and right systems which utilize local airstream direction and flap position information to provide stall warning and stall preventative signals to actuate the existing aircraft stick pusher and shaker.
D. Exhaust Nozzle Modification
The XR utilizes a convergent-divergent type exhaust nozzle to optimize cruise per-formance.
E. Trim System Modification
A horizontal stabilizer actuator modification, trim interrupt circuit and trim warning system provides cruise trim, trim in motion, trim fault and take-off out-of-trim indications.
F. Flap Preselect System
This system allows positive selection of four flap positions; up, 10°, 20°, and down, in addition to the manual mode of flap operation.
G. VMO Increase (Optional)
This option allows an increase in maximum airspeed above 14,000 feet from 300 KCAS to
350 KCAS.
H. Thrust Reversers (Optional)
The Dee Howard Company thrust reversers for the General Electric CJ610 engine are available on the XR. The thrust reverser were removed when the Hush kits were installed.
The corvette with wings. There was one at KMTN, twenty plus years ago, when I was learning to fly. Very cool.
My Mother used to fly a 24D model N711DB. I think it was the most fun she had in a airplane. The hush kit requirements make them unbelievably cheap in todays markets.
Love Analog.
Great that it's got hushkits, that saves a major expense!
Definitely!
A true classic . I subbed
Thank you! I will be posting more about this in the future.
Wow, hit me up if you are going to sell it😮😂. It's absolutely amazing, we need more people like you thant want to preserve these beautiful aircraft❤
Well all it takes is money. LOL, Yeah I may have bit off more than I can chew on this.
While they are undoubtedly very cool old jets, there are hundred$ of thou$and$ of rea$ons why you don't seem many of them anymore.
Love the Lear jet 24’s. How is it going so far since you bought it? Any progress? It’s a very very special aircraft, there’s none like it flying today. I would like to see more videos….really do.
I'm working on more info. I have to get back down to the aircraft and try to get some help to transport it. I'm pretty excited but to move it correctly without damage requires a great deal of care and know-how. So trying to get my ducks in a row. Thanks for the interest! I have some more videos coming soon.
Sounds good!!! I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next. Keep up the good work. You have a one of kind aircraft (A special piece of craftsmanship) Hopefully I get the opportunity to see it in person.
Good aircraft
The learjet 24 is the dodge of the skies. I hope I can get one after my ppl, if my insurance covers my friends' barf. Nasa should convert them into single stage to orbit spacecraft. And if I get one, I'm gonna make sure its as noisy as possible, because I'm american.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It Deserves a GTN750, very nice aircraft
I looked up the 750XI and it said it's 20k. How much is install?
Great idea to preserve it.
Not so great if you want to fly it,
i read a report from a pilot that you can swan dive a lear 24 by putting the throttles to idle and dumping the reverse thrusters at altitude and drop straight down nose dive military style without flaming out the engines. service ceiling 51k !
It’s 23……..true jet ..some logic to it how ever..I owned 24 35a best time of my life
My one true love...plan and simple
Depends on how many cycles it has plus the engines do not meet noise requirements
Fun 2 1/2 hr flight time. How much to fuel?
Miss that original "bullet tail" vertical stab... but even with the hush-kits, the list of available airports keeps shrinking... if you get in over your head, still a viable market for these obsolete models in Central and South America, or as parts donors... good luck!
Ever heard of Payne Stewart?
Yes.
1000s of hours in 20 @ 30 series here. 20 series are a blast to fly but as gas guzzlers they expensive to operate. I’m not even aware of any that have been RVSM certified for this reason. Straight turbojets are antiques.
I’m in 100% I will need at least 12 of these Lear’s next year for an advanced aviation flight school. Please send me your contact information 🦅
Flew freight in the 24/25, fun plane
Let me fly it with you!
Good luck
But the acrobatics that Clay Lacy was doing-- is it possible in any learjet? Don't these need to be certified to do aerobatics? What about the safety restraints for the seat to keep you in the seat? What about the airframe stability?
That’s a great question. I will ask some friends. I know with 8 wing spars that plane could hold some G’s.
Cessna have 2 wing spars. Some Pipers have 1
I don't know you but we do share the same love and admiration for Bill Lears creations.
If their is any way I can contribute to saving these awesome machines let me know how I can be of help
Thanks Gerald, soon I may reach out to you for help. What part of the country are you based out of?
@@itsathaithing Atlanta area
@@perrygn74 Me too, up in Buford. I will be moving the plane up here shortly.
@@itsathaithing Give tours for a fee. I am in Fl, but would gladly pay to see and tour up close. I'm sure others would too.
They are hard to find there was only 259 built from 1966-1977
Less than a price of a Corolla??? How much did you buy it for, mate? Also, what are the annual fixed costs of ownership? I mean hangar, insurance, crew salary (I think with these you need a minimum of 2) and other fees? And what's their running cost per hour (fuel, maintenance, landing, etc)? This is definitely an intriguing video!
To answer your question way too much on everything. lol
IF you fly it yourself one hour per month with an unpaid friend as copilot, no insurance, and keep it a hangar you own, allocate a MINIMUM of $65,336 per year for operating expenses and maintenance reserves.
Gotta pay to play.
What's the latest? I assume you paid no more than $50K for this, used to buy and sell corporate jets all the time, but this one going to be expensive as I'm sure you have found out.
Well I just purchased it so it wouldn't get cut up. Plus it had hush kits. Trying to find someone who can help me demate the wing and remove the engines. I want to just put it in long term storage. So that 50 years from now my daughters have something to talk about. Maybe it will be on a show like "What's in the barn".
Any updates after a year of ownership? Can a guy even get one of these things airworthy again?
That is a great question. It's really a matter of money. I really just need to get a mechanic that knows Learjets and have him look it over. But that costs money.
I’ve got another Learjet I’m willing to sell to you!
I want to help.
What will it take to get her in the air?
$$$$ 😉🙃
If you all have a chance please subscribe to my channel. I am going down to see the Learjet soon and will be making more videos.
Single Pilot???
I don't think they are certified for single. I believe the 23's were.
Nothing like an old Lear, but damn, 350 GPH fuel burn !!!!
Is this a fairly accurate number?
@@DavidKasan Yes sir; they held 900 gallons full; at 2 hours you better be damn close to landing; but a joy to fly
