U2’s music has often been my go to during my most saddest moments in my life dealing with loss, abandonment, and deep sadness. Especially since the passing of my adopted mom several months ago.💔😢🥀 “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” is a deeply personal favorite of mine as I often think of the loss of my own biological dad. Love me some Bono and he’s got, such a compassionate warm heart it seems as well.💛
Bono lost his mother as a teenager. The song "Lemon" is about finding an old 8mm film of her wearing a yellow dress. In fact a lot of his songs have some reference to her death and how it affected him.
Same here, but my interest in them is restricted to their first four albums (Boy, October, War and Unforgettable Fire). Those four constitute one of the best four-album sequences of any band ever.
Not a single line up change in that band in 44 years is so very impressive. Being married to the same person for almost the same length of time is even more impressive these days.
I find it absolutely stunning that he can do the bidding for the most horrible men on earth, and champion their plans, and just walk about like nothing happened.
U2 has helped me through some very depressing times in my life. Electrical Storm is the song which got me through my senior year of high school because of my bipolar disorder but nobody diagnosed me. I can't say enough good things about them. U2 is just a great rock band who manage to reinvent themselves a lot. Probably the best thing to come out Ireland. They are definitely in my top 3 favorites next to Bruce and The Rolling Stones.
I was at that "WAR" concert at Red Rocks Ampitheater in Colorado in 1983...seeing the footage again gave me chills, just like their music has for the last 40+ years.
I remember watching this concert when I was just a kid (13 years old), and going back there at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in 2018, having a feeling of “I’ve been here before”. Lol, had no idea I was actually where the concert was! I wasn’t even born yet… (1993 here), but these guys were so special in my entire life
U2 were the Beatles of my generation. When I was listening to them and going to their concerts as a teenager in the 80s, I never imagined that their music would mean even more to me now than it did back then. That the band in general, and Bono in particular, would turn out to be men of such great character is a bonus. There will never be another band like U2.
These four men are truly remarkable. Over 4 decades and they are friends creating music together. A rare group indeed. My favorite since seeing them in 1980 at The Ritz in NYC.
I'm not a religious person, nor do I go to church, but seeing U2 is the closest thing to a "religious" experience I've ever had. The War album started it off for me but it was Unforgettable Fire that sealed the deal when I was a 12 year old kid growing up in small town Texas. Saw them twice for the Zoo TV tour then again for the Pop Mart tour. Edge singing "Sunday Bloody Sunday" alone was, as I said, a religious experience.
We are about the same age and I completely get what you posted. First song on debut album (I Will Follow) I was hooked. I devoured the early albums in the 80's constantly. With "Joshua Tree" and "Rattle and Hum" movie/album I was obsessed. I have taken my wife to see dozens of legends for years and U2 is still her favorite live concerts.
Totally agree, where the streets have no name live ,actually being there for that experience is as close to a religious experience as I've been fortunate to see. Especially the Joshua tree tour, which imo is a masterpiece.
I love love this interview ❤️ I love it for so many reasons. U2 reminds me of falling in love as a teenager. I was a teenager when I heard my first U2 song. I bought Joshua Tree as a cassette.
I still have my Boy and War cassette tapes-no cassette player to listen to them, but so nostalgic I keep them just the same. Maybe ought to find a vintage Walkman for old times sake.

Agreed. But it’s not just him. It’s the entire band. It’s puzzled me as well because they’re not bad guys. In fact, quite the opposite. I believe a major factor in why that dynamic exists with them is because of how long(and consistently) the band has been around with zero lineup changes/break ups. In fact, they are now officially the longest running band in the history of rock without lineup changes, break ups, deaths, etc. So I think at some point it becomes a matter of public exhaustion. Great Interview! I wish we could have heard more from Ali! She is the huge inspiration behind Bono’s words…well, let me correct myself!! I think it’s safe to say that Jesus is Bono’s biggest inspiration behind those beautiful words!
Bono and Ali Hewson are two of my absolute favorite humans ever.....love who they are...love what they stand for and how they give...I feel like Ali is the silent 5th member of U2. The world is forever grateful.
Saw her in Dublin airport with her youngest daughter walking through duty free. She is a class act. Very Down to earth yet sophisticated. Great family!

All of these clips from his earlier music make me want to go back and watch his videos again when I first thought, "He can sing! He's smart! I love the lyrics! He wants to do more than just be famous! And he's pretty dang cute!" I love this band, I always have, and I always will. Thank you for this story!

I have to say my Brother Brian Buckingham took me to see u2 in Tampa Stadium Dec 5, 1987.A night I will never forget. My favorite song is "One" by the number #1 band in the world. U2

I remember not wanting to be at the hotel, so we slept in the office .. the boss replaced the Guiness machine every morning, so .. we were wasted after work .. every day :) .. As a huge Phil Lynott fan I loved this place in the 80s :)
U2 is the sound track of my youth. When my dad died last year, we kept his body for the day for out of town family to be able to come make their closure. When the funeral home came to get him, on a gurney, swathed in the American flag (as he was a veteran) Bullet the Blue Sky was playing on the stereo. It sounded so deep and intense as what my soul was feeling at the moment. I cry like a baby every time I hear that song now. Now, when I need a good cry, I'll BLAST it.
Ya can say wat ever ya want about bono and the boyz but yap cant deny his hard work on charity and helping the poor and helping kids get an education ❤
He either publicly fakes his humility and humanity extremely well or he is really a special person in the world. In either case, he (and his band mates) has done massive amounts of good in the world with their voices, efforts and good deeds. More power to them all.
Bono has done more to destroy Europe than any other entertainer. He has the same politics as Bill Gates and Tony Blair. Ireland is being completely demographically destroyed with open borders and your boy is happy about it. The American Empire wants war with Russia and Bono is happy to promote that too. If he wasn't a Globalist shill he wouldn't be getting positive coverage from American Corporate Media.
Been into U2 since War and what an incredible ride it's been, especially live in concert. Tremendous band. Good on ya, Bono. Will certainly pick up your memoir, you old rock dog ya. X
I’m a follower of Jesus and a churchgoer, and Bono and the boys have been a help to me since college days to keep my feet on the ground and connect faith to everyday life and realities in the world. Sacramental rock. 🎸 Good segment here! 👏🏻
Bono looks older and wiser year after year..... First time I saw U2 live was in 1981..the believe in his music and faith has never stopped! Love him!!!
They are my favorite band of all time… it just puts me in a mood. The music is just poetry. “Early morning, April 4, shot rings out in a Memphis sky… free at last… they took your life, they could not take your pride.”
Yes, Alexander. Agree! I was lucky enough to have discovered them right from Boy in 1980 and have gone along with them ever since, loving every minute of their music and humanitarian work. So grateful for them and their work.
I was one of a few thousand maybe in a small (The Varsity?) theater, in the U District, Seattle, 1983 (?), after War came out, and was one of 100,000 in The Coliseum in Los Angeles, 1987 (?), after The Joshua Tree came out. If anyone could capture that longing we have in our souls for transcendence, it was them. Really wish I could have heard them live more!
I love how in the beginning U2 and Simple Minds were trying to figure out if they wanted their sound to be like the other band, they both had so much respect for each other. Both bands found d their own voices and made a wonderful impact on the world.
U2 ARE one of the finest bands to EVER come out of Ireland , i have loved them since the start even had U2-3 sadly long gone to pay debts , would love to meet them all one day , been a dream of mine for decades !!!!!
I've been listening to U2 a lot lately on their Sirius XM satellite channel and I've realized that they are basically un copy able (not sure best word to use there). Their sound is just so signature and unique to them.
Great interview. I grew up in the same area as Bono. I remember hearing about U2 from a friend at school when I was about 10 years old and they were just starting out.
In Dublin Ohio every year in August they host the Dublin Irish Festival. Music, beer, artists, but the best part is that on Sunday, they have various religious services. One is dedicated to the songs of U2.
Seen many bands live but none of them come anyway close to U2 live.Seen them a few times and they have blown me away each time.Oh for the record she said it's Bono's band but it's not.He may be the front man but it was actually Larry Mullen Jr who put U2 together.
I've had the pleasure and honor of being at a U2 concert in Germany and the United States and both were amazing!! Frankfurt, Germany was open air at the Waldstadion in June of 1993, then about 12 years later it was at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado!
I think their authentic relationship with Jesus is what makes them special. They walk the talk and are real-not perfect & with a sense of humor. Christians should be like this. I Love them!

Miracle Drug is the one song that really hits me hard by them. I lost a girlfriend to leukemia I wish there'd of been a miracle drug 😢
@@KOSMICKEN09 So sad. I wish you endurance.
This is really a refreshing and well done interview and profile. Kind of gave me chills.
A man with talent, integrity, intelligence and humble as well. So rare in todays musicians. I’d love to sit down and have a beer or two with him.
An icon of peace and love 🙏❤
Me arse.
sounds like you could do with some brotherrrrrrrr
Great Interview! I wish we could have heard more from Ali! She is the huge inspiration behind Bono’s words…well, let me correct myself!! I think it’s safe to say that Jesus is Bono’s biggest inspiration behind those beautiful words!
They have lasted the test of time and other bands and that shows what amazing artists they are... An amazing collective.
1, 2, 3, 14!
That always puts a smile one my face. Good counting, Bono 😅
Great report and update of the U2 phenomenon.
This was so good! I'm buying his book
I hope you've started reading it. He's funny and witty and very readable. The audiobook is phenomenal too -- he's the reader! Fabulous.
he's an incredible human being, and musician
I'm a Gen Xer and I have always had a thing for Bono for all the reasons you see in this video. All of these clips from his earlier music make me want to go back and watch his videos again when I first thought, "He can sing! He's smart! I love the lyrics! He wants to do more than just be famous! And he's pretty dang cute!" I love this band, I always have, and I always will. Thank you for this story!
Amen!! ☺️🥰
They are one of only a handful of bands left on my bucketlist, they just don't tour anymore, but I heard they may be doing a Vegas residency next year.
I thought they were one of the most relentlessly-touring groups ever? They’ve been nearly everywhere throughout the years.
@@erikm8372 sorry should have clarified, the key word was "anymore" there hasn't been a US tour since 2017 and Us tickets are extremely hard to get first hand, usually always paying over $100 per ticket
I have to say my Brother Brian Buckingham took me to see u2 in Tampa Stadium Dec 5, 1987.A night I will never forget. I became a u2 Fan the second they walked on stage. There was also a shooting star... I was 19 years old. U2 to me is a band that is known through out the universe, regardless if you hated them or they were your favorite. Almost all have heard the Bands name. My favorite song is "One" by the number #1 band in the world. U2
He does look like he's had a long paper round but many stars in his position have a lot of work done & he hasn't & I admire him for that he's authentic. Maybe some hair work but no knife work or botox, good on ya Bono!
He is ageing gracefully. Which is a commendable thing.
Great point Geoff, I am getting my own wrinkles now too, so I am even more impressed Bono has accepted it. He could have gotten work done, trying to keep looking young. The man is comfortable with himself, a legend
@@thomasjosullivan9179 he is not comfortable with himself, you can literally feel his demons circlicng around his alcoholic head... he should have gotten surgery, if he is unae to get rid of them...
@@maticbukovac6966 I have no interest in what you think Matic and I am pretty sure Bono has even less.
I worked as a gaming coder in periods of 2-3 month in Dublin during the troubles early 80s .. I remember not wanting to be at the hotel, so we slept in the office .. the boss replaced the Guiness machine every morning, so .. we were wasted after work .. every day :) .. As a huge Phil Lynott fan I loved this place in the 80s :)
Absolutely loved it. Norah was perfect. Bono is indescribable…🙏🏻
Bono is both great guy and talented artist
Ya can say wat ever ya want about bono and the boyz but yap cant deny his hard work on charity and helping the poor and helping kids get an education ❤
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ not enough heart emoji’s to express the LOVE!!
@truthseeker proof
Loved him for more than 30 years ❤😊
2023 still the biggest band on earth
They need to make a decent new record though. Red hot chilli 🌶 peppers have just done two in a row
@Doug Doug No doubt about it U2 is biggest band on earth
Been into U2 since War and what an incredible ride it's been, especially live in concert. Tremendous band. Good on ya, Bono. Will certainly pick up your memoir, you old rock dog ya. X
U2 changed my life. I've been following them since 1983 ❤️
Bono is articulate and real-can’t wait for the book to come out.
I've seen nine U2 concerts. Each one was a mind blower.
Noine, Gary?
Lucky!!! I have seen U2 3 times in concert I am 62 and I hope I get to 1 my time!!!
@@letsrockgold407 I'm 61. I haven't seen them since I was in my forties. Would love at least one more.
I’m a follower of Jesus and a churchgoer, and Bono and the boys have been a help to me since college days to keep my feet on the ground and connect faith to everyday life and realities in the world. Sacramental rock. 🎸 Good segment here! 👏🏻
He leaves his Heart out in every performance…. ❤🇲🇽
Drummer seeks musicians and the history happens. Their music is magic.
40 years to one person , deserves a medal
I think she does
Absolutely love this man. Love his music. His outlook on events.
I do appreciate the work you have done.
I was with you from the beginning.
1980
Yes, Alexander. Agree! I was lucky enough to have discovered them right from Boy in 1980 and have gone along with them ever since, loving every minute of their music and humanitarian work. So grateful for them and their work.
The music of my youth. U2 - nostalgic and timeless.
U2 is my core fuel. They express the amazing drama of life itself. Stay tuned…
One of the best frontman’s in music history.
Hands down the best frontman I've ever seen you can't take your eyes off him
Sunday Bloody Sunday ..is also a very good Film 📽️...1971..
when that mysterious ways tune came out I was stunned by it!! the melody and construction of the song was so original.
Really good piece on Bono, thanks CBS Sunday a.m.
I love how in the beginning U2 and Simple Minds were trying to figure out if they wanted their sound to be like the other band, they both had so much respect for each other. Both bands found d their own voices and made a wonderful impact on the world.
did he and Jim Kerr have a falling out later tho , haven’t spoken for years ?
@@tonybuckley6413 Sorry, I have no idea. Now I have to go down a rabbit hole.
Simple minds never bettered NGD. Not even close
.
U2 ARE one of the finest bands to EVER come out of Ireland , i have loved them since the start even had U2-3 sadly long gone to pay debts , would love to meet them all one day , been a dream of mine for decades !!!!!
THIS BAND SHAPED MY LIFE, ABSOLUTELY, THANK YOU TOO.
U2 is the greatest band of all time. Still the biggest band on earth 2023
U2's songs have always felt to me like surreal comfort
Not Norah O'Donnell cursing! LOL Funny, funny, funny. Great interview as always.
Oooo, so edgy!
In Dublin Ohio every year in August they host the Dublin Irish Festival. Music, beer, artists, but the best part is that on Sunday, they have various religious services. One is dedicated to the songs of U2.
Loved this interview 🎶💯🎶❤️🩹👍
Great interview. Thank you for this !! Well done
Those men are good men and have done so much to better the world.
CBS Sunday Morning...is my favorite Sunday viewing...always interesting stories
Bono is my personal favorite icon and lead singer!
yeah I like him too but Steve Perry is my all time favorite when it comes to rockers.
@@leecowell8165 Bono is number one favorite
@@leecowell8165 Love U2 + Bono... however... Steve Perry has the best voice in music history! I appreciate your comment.
I would love to see a movie 🍿 about their lives and love story is truly amazing!
❤U2
The Joshua Tree was the first album I ever bought. It’s still my favorite of all time.
I think their authentic relationship with Jesus is what makes them special. They walk the talk and are real-not perfect & with a sense of humor. Christians should be like this. I Love them!
