Derren Brown is legit. He's built his celebrity around never using plants or camera tricks. The example you gave was taken out of context. The purpose was to convince the subject pushing a button would kill the cat, and getting her to do it anyway. The tension doesn't come from thinking "are they really going to kill that cat?" but rather "is she really going to push the button?" Of course when she does the kitten isn't electrocuted, but the audience already knows that. I get that he's not for everyone, but he's by no means fake. Once you know that, the stuff he does gets way more interesting.
It seemed fake because of the "movie" acting by Brown, the overwhelming acceptance of the experiment by the other actor and the fact she pressed it at the very last second. All this played up to make the biggest dramatic impact made it seem clearly scripted to us. But to each their own. If it is real, convincing her that she would kill this kitten is at least morally dubious.

And seeing as its sting can literally melt you, and they attack in swarms, I'd have to say spiders are the least of my worries. Now that I've seen some more of his stuff, he does have some impressive tricks. The kitten video just isn't a good introduction I guess. What with it feeling scripted and all.
