- When Formular One returned to Austria in 1997, public Austrian TV station ORF went ballistic and broadcast many hours of coverage each day, starting Wednesday. One part of it was this documentary about the old Österreichring, directed by Heinz Prüller. If I remember correctly, its original running time was around 20-25 minutes, and here is unfortunately only a fragment. I was at the Ring at the time and had to rely on mum to switch VHS cassettes, which went wrong at this point. Nevertheless, there is priceless footage in these 13 minutes.

Die Stimme von Heinz hat mich 40 Jahre meines Lebens begleitet und jetzt werde ich bald 50.
Hoffentlich geht es ihm halbwegs, er ist wirklich eine Legende!

Ich beneide euch Österreicher, dass ihr einen Heinz Prüller hattet.
Ich mag Kommentatoren, die so sachlich sind und viel Sachverstand haben.

die Leute stehen auf der Wiese bis zur Leitplanke, die Boxencrew in T-Shirt und Jeans, die Fahrer gehen am Wörthersee Wasserschi-, Motorboot fahren und schlafen am Bauernhof
Das war halt noch vor dem ganzen Kommerz. Mir persönlich gefällt die alte F1 viel besser. Als Prüller dann beim ORF aufhörte, schaute ich kein einziges Rennen mehr live. Nur noch die Highlights und heute gar nichts mehr. Damals waren dass einfach verrückte Hunde die aus liebe zum Sport ihr Leben riskierten und zufrieden waren wenn sie auf dem Trepperl standen. Heute geht es nur noch um Kohle und fette Werbe-Verträge, einfach zum 🤮.
Thank you for uploading this it's such an awesome video. I really love the old Osterreichring circuit such great elevation changes and high speed sweeping corners. And the beautiful Austrian scenery just adds to it. A true drivers circuit.

Heinz war und ist eine Legende. Bin mit ihm aufgewachsen, jeden Sonntag Nachmittag das F1 Rennen mit dem Vater geschaut. Doch als Heinz aufhörte und Hausleitner übernahm, schaute ich nur noch die Zusammenfassung sprich die Highlights der Rennen an.
Da Hausleitner is a ned schlecht heast...
Die alte Strecke hat mein ehemaliger Chef geplant, ich hatte noch die alten Skizzen aber der originale Plan ist leider in der Bauzeit verschwunden.

Der alte Österreichring war einfach noch toll, eine Topspeedstrecke über Flatschach, dagegen ist der heutige Ring eine Mickeymausstrecke!

@@HankCastelli Tja so war das eben in der ECHTEN F1! Jeder der Jungs wusste worauf sie sich einlassen, damals war jedes Rennen ein Spiel mit dem Tod! Schau dir Lauder an, nach dem Unfall total verbannt und verkohlt, ohne Merzario wäre er eh tot gewesen, und schon 2 Rennen später saß er wieder im Auto. Heute undenkbar! Die F1 starb durch den ganzen Kommerz, es begann schon in den 90ern. Die ganzen Milchbubis von heute heulen rum wenn sie sich einen Zehen verstauchen und pausieren Rennen weil sie Kopfschmerzen haben. Sowohl den Teams als auch den Fahrern geht es nur noch um die Kohle und um die fettesten (Werbe)-Verträge. Alles Lackaffen.

Wochen pausieren mit Gipsarm gibt's aber auch nicht so wie bei Lauda .

Essentially, imagine that in addition to the large hill that they are now climbing between the new turns 1 and 2 (Remus), there is another hill ridge in the space between the new track and the old track in the picture. The new track stays inside this hill ridge, the old one goes around it on the outside. One of the main reasons for the change was that the old track passed a village on the ridge's outside at Flatschach, and the people there were annoyed by the racetrack noise. The other reason was that the old track was insanely fast, plus I suppose difficult to marshal due to its length.

Turn numbers below refer to the turn numbers as used by the original new layout in the above picture, i.e. the highest point of the new track, Remus corner, is turn 2. (In the latest numbering scheme that is in use now, the little kink between turn 1 and Remus is now the turn 2 and Remus is 3))

In Detail:
As you know, at the end of the start/finish straight there is a short uphill part, and at the end of it there is a steep hill to the driver's right. On the new track, after the short uphill part at the end of the start/finish straight, they turn immediately to the right at turn (1) and then immediately go up the steep hill. But, after this new turn 1 and while going up the hill, there is an additional ridge of the hill to the driver's left (where the grandstands now are between turns 1 and 2).
On the old track however, the track did not turn right immediately where the new turn 1 is, but instead went a bit straight on, with the additional hill ridge staying to the driver''s right. Then it turned right in the first version of the track, this was called "Vöest Hügel Kurve" (Vöest Hill Corner), which is where Mark Donohue died. This was then replaced by a fast chicane (Hella S). Both versions are shown in shades of gray in the picture. At the exit of the Hella S the track finally turned right, now being at the outside of the additional ridge of the hill (instead of the inside where it now is)
This led into a long, very fast less steep stretch (roughly in parallel to the new track, but all the while with the hill ridge to the driver's right), into the Flatschach left kink and further up the hill to the track's highest point, a long right-hander (Dr.-Tiroch corner). This corner finally went back around the top of the additional hill ridge and led onto a long fast downhill straight. This meets the new track where turn (2) now is, Remus corner. (Apart from the Donohue crash site, we are not seeing much in the video of this stretch from T1 up to the meeting point with the new track at the new Remus, nor did we on TV at the time. ).

If you look closely, the little Mickey-Mouse-kink in the new uphill stretch between turn 1 and Remus is a bit of a reference to the old Flatschach kink (which was scary though and anything but Micky Mouse).

Other changes were just a re-profiling of the other corners as you can see in the picture. Essentially everything is slower now. E.g. what is now the two rather sharp turns 8 and 9 was then another scary long and fast single corner (Jochen Rindt corner), which (as you can see in the video) was a little bit like Parabolica in Monza, but downhill.
Why was Montezemelo making all that hassle? Was he frustrated becauae the race had been stopped too soon?
No, they were still racing while he was being upset. He wanted the race to be stopped because it was insane to continue
Äh...entschuldigung...“Gerhard Berger, das neue Vorbild nach dem Rücktritt von Niki Lauda...“Das ist Unsinn, mit Verlaub, der Herr Berger hat kaum Erfolge in diesem Sport.
Peter Müller du hast aber nicht gerade viel Ahnung von der Formel 1.
Äh, damals war das alles andere als klar und Berger ein großes junges Talent. Er war nie mehr der selbe nach dem Imola-Unfall.
