  • Tusheti road in Georgia is one of the most dangerous roads in the world. It is well known as a "death road" because of many fatal accidents. This dirty unpaved road is situated deeply in beautiful Caucasus mountains. It is connecting Kakheti region with Tusheti region through the higest mountain road pass in Caucasus - Abano pass in altitude 2 850 m. The road is opened arround from May to October (depends on weather conditions). It is accesible only by 4x4 vehicles and it’s really challenging for driving skills. On the way one can try the natural termal springs Torghva. Our goal was the village Omalo - cute mountain village with wonderful views, fortress, several guesthouses for eating and sleeping, local hospitality and perfect breakfast :)
Tusheti road in numbers (from Pshaveli village to Omalo village):
    - Distance: 72 km
    - Vertical elevation: 2 800 m ascent / 1 380 m descent
    - Max. altitude: 2 850 m Abano pass
    - Travel time: 5 - 7 hours

We did it one week ago. 6,5 hours of pure concentration. Amazing landscapes, beautiful nature, deep silence outside and inside ( ;) )and an unforgetable trip! Start in the morning when you want drive yourself and take your time to drive save and make enough brakes to enjoy the moment.
And remember, that the first 20 km are the heaviest, then the road becomes more comfortable. The most drivers quit at the first 20 km. We had best weather, otherwise i wouldn’t do it!
Thanks to all the good people, that we mett on our way :)

I drove a rental Subaru forester in July 2023 up and down. It takes about 4 to 5 hrs to reach Omalo.
They have widened the road so incoming traffic is not really a problem. The road is very rocky, it’s first gear 99% of the time unless you want to break a sway bar or strut. I’d say it’s rocks, rocks and rocks and lots of hairpins in latter part.
You’ll need an AWD because of ground clearance but 4x4 is not necessary unless in extreme weather. Not really dangerous if you’re focused just demanding 100% attention to driving.

Great shots! I"ve tried to pass this road last year. Our Fiat Scudo Long van with front wheels drive only, had to surrender on one of the many turns leading up. It was too dangerous, considering 5 yo kid on our board...

Great quality of video. Amazing views and really extremely dangerous road.. Just arrived from Tusheti, Omalo yesterday. Stayed there for one night. Honestly never seen any videos or photos of Tusheti road. Just drove there. We loved this extreme breathtaking trip..

the best video of this road that ive found (and perfect music to overlay it with!). i did this road last september and loved the drive in my Jeep! Both ways we were stopped for 30-40mins because of rockfalls onto the road and had to wait while the excavator cleared the way for us. I will do the road again this year at some point, i hear it opened up about a week ago after clearing the snow, but the view is non existant at road level as there is 8ft snow each side of you for large parts of it! I will probably go again in september before it starts snowing again!
