Thanks for putting Price/Value front & center in your reviews, because so many reviewers make believe it's somehow beneath them to mention prices, when in fact 99.99% of us care about these things.
In this case it's Diageo, so I'm not buying it, but more importantly, and you made clear, it's just not worth it.
It's very easy to get swept up in this hobby, but I'm personally growing tired of the trends and will not chase these bottles up & up the price ladder. It's a f@#king drink, not a holy sacrament, and for me it borders on being something wrong to spend so much money on the chance that a drink might be fractionally better or different than a far more economical bottle ✌️

I think some reviewers don't mention prices because they vary so much. They are less expensive in controlled states like Ohio but also harder to find. And Prices in Canada seem to be INSANE.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Agreed; and doesn't it seem like there's a disproportionate number of whisky enthusiasts in Canada despite those prices? There's a level of complacency I will never understand.

The 14 (Alexander's Way) is one of the better travel retail bottles on the market and usually pretty similar in price to the 12 and certainly worth a space in the luggage if travelling! Cheers

I just recently tried the 16 and enjoyed the flavor profile but found it lacking from the low ABV. If they bottles this at 48% it would be absolutely amazing.

I have yet to try either one. I have heard mixed reviews that the 16 is where you should start to get better quality, but that the independent bottlings of Mortlach are far superior than the core range.

Great comparison. Would love to see more of them. I tried Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18. Weirdly I like 12 more than 15, but 18 was the best one. It's just an example cause not always you will like older whiskey more. Can't wait to compare glencadam 10 with 15 one.

Superb review as usual Erik. The detail you cram into these short reviews is absolutely fantastic. 👍 You say the 12 and 16 are identical apart from age, but initially you rightly stated the 12 is matured in bourbon+sherry casks, and the 16 in just sherry. And I'm not sure if the 16 goes through this "Wee Witchie" distillation process like the 12?

Only had the 12 so far, but it was the dominant apricot flavour that really floated my boat, it was so distinctive and I’ve never had a whisky with that profile… I’d buy it regularly just on that basis. There are other whiskies I’ve had that also have a single dominant flavour such as a single cask strength 12 year old Glenallachie with an abv of just over 6o% which was like biting into a bar of dark chocolate, or another that I forget which was butter popcorn. So for me it isn’t always about complexity.
    Great review. Thanks.

Another wonderful comparison video Erik. For me the 16 is so superior to the 12. However it is difficult to justify the difference in price.

Nice comparison Erik! I absolutely love the 16! It's a fantastic whisky and I don't know if you've tried it before but I get a mastic note from it. Mastic is a Greek/Cypriot/Turkish tree sap and they make gum, liquors and jams out of it. Cheers Erik 🥃

Hi Erik!! Happy Wednesday!! I have tried the Mortlach 12 many times and I enjoy it and I am on the hunt locally for Mortlach 16! It's more difficult to find! I really want to try it! These comparisons are always so interesting and I learn a lot! Hey Douglas Fir wash backs? Is that common? So interesting!! Cheers!! 🙂 Lol!!! I love how you said, "Back in the day!!!" No point in knowing what it was like way back then because as you astutely pointed out - we can't access the older Mortlach 16!! Lol!! Right on Erik!! I hear you on whether the extra price can be justified for the 16? Maybe not for a second bottle but I still very much want to experience one bottle of Mortlach 16 and I'd love to do a comparison with the 12just as you did!! Fabulous video/channel!! Terrific learning experience!!

Question boys: The Mortlach 12 in my area I can find for $62. There's an IB Mortlach 12 yr cask strength for $90. Is it really worth the price difference? It's been sitting on the shelf for a couple years now. I've been waiting for the price to go down but hasn't yet. Thanks for the input.

"Worth it" is a subjective call. Something may be "Worth it" to me but not to you. Would I buy it? Yep, in a heartbeat.

@@ErikWaitWhiskyStudies Thank you for the advice. It is subjective, but for me, your opinion carries a little more weight. I just found you the other day and I have been going through the episodes. Keep up the good work!

I'm just glad they've moved to these newer, somewhat sanely priced bottles. We still have dusty bottles around town from their old core because stores refuse to just give them away, and at MSRP, they've never selling. Love the distillate...just not sure why Diageo feels the need to price them as their ultra premium distillery.

@joeromano7902 , yes. Signatory has a Mortlach 15years old from 2008, matured in bourbon cask. I was wondering if this is good.Thank you, cheers!

Well I got one bottle from a Mom n Pop store at $10 below Total Wines price. I’m one and done. One good thing about Mortlach are the IBs from Signatory. If you thought the 16 year was meaty the higher ABV offerings are super meaty.

I liked the 12, but couldn't get into the 16. I really liked the 20 too, but it's definitely not worth $200-240 lol.
