I respect the first OP for realizing where they went wrong. It's not that people are proud that they had bad experiences or hurt themselves, it's that they're proud they survived. There's nothing wrong with showing off and being proud of how far you've come.
Yeah, that was wild. Like people do actually learn to be proud of their scars if they experienced trauma in getting them or they're from self harm - it's part of the healing process for some people. Plus there is always scarification which is an entire art form.

I agree. I am a recovering addict with almost 5 years clean. I am always proud to tell my story! I've come so far from where I was and the way my sobriety came about is unusual and unbelievable. If the friend wants to show off their scars.. let them and support them! I'm glad the person changed their mind.
In the last post, I went through something similar. My dad accidentally overdosed on muscle relaxers, was in intensive care. We didn't know if he would survive and if he did if he would have brain damage. My toxic gf, was bitching at me because I was staying with my mom for that week because she was alone, then it escalated even more. She called, my mom was sitting next to me in my car. She was like "When are you coming home, this is ridiculous. The sink is full of dishes, you need to come take care of this"! My mom almost ripped the phone out of my hand since she could hear what she was saying. Thankfully my Dad made it through, and is fine today. I ended the 8 year relationship about a year later over that and so many other things. That story really hit home.
It sounded like a great ending to that first story. Reddit is so filled with rude people trying to one-up each other in arguments that it legitimately comes off as a huge surprise when you see that kind of growth and acceptance being talked about. Thank you for sharing this.
The first tattoo story was in relation to Astarion’s tattoo in the game Baldur’s Gate 3 - I saw the original post and many of the redditors pointed this out as well as saying that the intention behind the tattoo is completely different to how it was perceived by the OP. I was glad to see such a turnaround by the OP nonetheless. Great video as always!
Without even reading the post, I imagined it was Astarion. Which made me feel even more disgusted towards the friend (of course I'm glad she tried to make things right).
I knew it would be Astarion, he's such a well written character it's very empowering. I'm glad the OP really thought about what she was doing but knowing it's BG3 and Astarion makes it even worse.
I feel like it's this unspoken thing where we can't acknowledge that tattoos can be negative coping mechanism for some people. People will be completely broke, but insist on spending their money on tattoos or will get them despite how it affects their future or people around them. At the end of the day, it helps us all to be more introspective about why we are getting tattoos and it also helps us to be more empathetic to others that we don't understand why they are getting theirs.
I read somewhere (if I find the article, I'll link it), that some people use tattoos as a form of SH. Like all recreational things that come with a dopamine response (video games, alcohol, food, etc.), it's not an bad thing by nature, but it can be something that's taken too far/turned into an unhealthy coping mechanism.
@@zaraweiss608 I can believe it as I've found it's not uncommon for people with self-esteem issues to want to get tattoos. I find that feeling in myself, too. The desire to change something about yourself into something else is something more and more people feel in the modern world. As someone who's always liked art, it can be hard to differentiate when I'm making a choice as a form of cope or because I have a pure appreciation for the art.

"We don't like tattoos, they're ugly and disgusting, you have to be some kind of stupid to do that to your body, don't ever think about getting one". So getting my first one definitely felt like a gloriously cathartic middle finger right in their faces :)

Parents like that are just controlling, under the guise they are "protecting" their children (even when the threat is minimal or doesn't exist). My mom was like that and it ended up having the opposite effect, it took me a long time to learn I had autonomy over my own body. It caused me to enter a toxic and possessive relationship with a man who wanted to control me like my mom.
The memorial tattoo story is crazy! Mainly bc I have a memorial tattoo of my bestfriends signature , matching with a mutual friend & my partner never got upset about it or even questioned me. He knows how much my best friend means to me , I always honor him in pretty much anything big that I do in life and try my best to include him even tho he's passed. I'm so glad my partner fully understands .

Story 1: sometimes getting something tattooed on you helps remind you of how far you’ve come from those hard times. 2: I got my first tattoo when I was 19 and in collage. My brother blurted out that I got it and my parents were so pissed off at me. Apparently I had made the agreement with my parents that I got a tattoo (I don’t remember this!) like my dad blew up about it and almost pulled me out of college but my brother and sister stood up for me and my parents backed down. It was a really weird situation. Now my sister and mom have tattoos that are variations of my 1st tattoo. I never got made at or thought my brother was an asshole for making his comment. Looking back it gave me a great memory of him and how he would go against my parents to protect me. He died over two years ago and I’m glad I have such a random memory of him ❤ Story 3: losing an older sibling is so hard. I have a memorial tattoo of my brothers favorite flower and the flowers of the two birth month flowers of his miscarriaged kids. His signature is the stem of the flowers. Any man that comes into my life will have to deal with it. Fuck that dudes girlfriend. His sister will always be apart of his life even though she’s gone just like my brother will always be apart of me.
For the first post, she isn't a friend to "Alice" . A friend would embrace someone's struggle and lift them, they wouldn't use that pain to demean them. Too many people are snakes in the grass, they laugh at your pain and struggle and still you are convinced they care about you and are a friend.
Everything u said is true but it seems like she understood her wrongdoing in the end and genuinely wanted to do better which is awesome. I think everyone deserves a chance to change and grow! We’re all human. Hopefully she’s a better friend now :)
I was skeptical about that first story as it was being read, but I was actually really impressed with the OP's reflection and explanation of her plans moving forward. I feel as though I actually learned from how she presented it about how to perfectly and meaningfully show that you have learned from your mistakes and genuinely are looking towards improving your actions and mending relationships. 💜
100% disagree about scars. Scars tell a story of what you’ve gone through. My wife has scars from when she gave birth. I seriously think they’re beautiful. I’ve got a lot of scars myself. I don’t try to hide them. My wife doesn’t either.
Many years ago, I had my sister's name tattooed on me, and she had my name tattooed on her. We were close. She lost her son to cancer. She was never able to fully recover from that loss. My sister died Oct. 29 of last year. I miss her. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up the phone to call her. I'm proud to wear her name on my shoulder. I'm the only one left from my family.

It truly is to each their own. "Live and let live" applies here. Just because it isn't a choice you'd make, doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else. Especially when it comes to personal expression. For example, medusa and semicolon tattoos. Would I get one? No. I don't feel comfortable personally putting vulnerability and trauma out for others to see. I also don't want the trauma that stains the soul on my skin. But I'd never tell anyone else to not get those tattoos. Good on OP for taking the time to self-reflect and turn things around.
With regards to the first one, I have quotes from Harry Potter tattooed on me that relate to my past experiences with depression/anxiety, it represents who I am and what I've been through to get to a healthy mental state. It never crossed my mind whether other people would think its 'good look' and it never fails to suprise me how most people think thats the reason people get tattoos.

Per the first one: I have tattoos that relate to bad times. Just got one Saturday, actually. Sometimes they are reminders of personal resilience or symbols of never going through that again. Specifically I got an open bear trap with a heart in the middle to represent not being stuck again. I came out of a massively abusive relationship last year and have since been diagnosed with PTSD. I got it as a reminder that I won’t be trapped again, hence the trap being open. I may have been stuck before, but it’s not happening again and I know what to look out for now with early warning signs. While the tattoo is a dark concept, it makes sense to the person who’s body it’s on.
I been hesitant on looking up self harm scars and getting tattoos to cover them so I wanted to ask, if you have any videos you made about them yet? I been wanting to get tattoos to cover up my scars but I held off on doing any research yet and since this is the first tattoo channel I subbed too, I figured I ask you instead. Sorry if this is off topic. Also I haven't looked through all your videos yet so my apologies again if you already have.
I covered up one wrist when I was ready, love it. I can still see my scars but now I also see a beautiful piece of art (a symbol that means a lot to me) first. To me it means I'm finishing with the old way of coping and am now going to move forward. It's been 7 years now and I've never regret my decision. I'm in the process of setting up an appointment for my other wrist right now, I am ready. Stay strong.
I covered some sh scars on my thigh and it was the best decision i’ve made in awhile ❤it hurt pretty badly but it was worth the pain since i don’t have to look at them and be reminded all the time that they exist
a dear friend of mine covered a big scar on her wrist from an attempt. The tattoo turned out beautiful. It‘s a king protea, an endemic South African flower that needs fire to release its seeds. It is the plant equivalent of a phoenix - a very fitting and beautiful motif for such a tattoo in my opinion.
I always feel so bad for these people to the point where I question if they’re fake. But truly I think there are people that delusional out there and I’m sad for the people who have to deal with them. 🍎
1:25 i have a self harm scar that was large enough to be quite noticeable so i got it tattooed in as a rainbow to transform a terrible time into something beautiful in my opinion and it’s so much better now. only vaguely realated but point is you can deal with bad things with tattoos to make them more positive

The first one annoyed me, we all get tattoos for our lives, for what we want, finding comfort in a character that goes through the same experience is great. It’s like getting mad at people for the Medusa tattoo, or the “;” tattoo, they have bigger meaning, and are sweet. I’m glad they realised it was wrong in the end
About story #1, to me that sounds like saying I'm f*cking stupid for wanting a medusa tattoo as a SA survivor and a semicolon for my depression and because I could have given up on life so many times already. And that just sucks.

I think the silver lining of the last story is that by behaving in that way the gf revealed her true manipulative self. There are a lot of subtlety controlling people in relationships who treat their partners like garbage but in ways that can be gaslit away. Sometimes it takes them doing such an obviously horrible thing for the person they are mistreating to realise what’s happening.
I would love to see more of these! I know they're not everyone's favorite thing, but i like the story telling aspect of it and the added commentary from you!
To the person who left the response to that first entry: Why do younger people think everything negative comes from a boomer? I am a boomer and very open minded. I do not have any tattoos but mainly because it wasn't done when I was growing up in a strict family and, to be honest, I never saw the appeal. However, it does not mean I am put off by them. Please, do not paint everyone in a generation with the same brush. We are just as varied a group of people as your generation.
Listen. If your friend wants to commemorate a bad experience, that’s their decision, and maybe a way of coping. Maybe, if done respectfully, you could question whether it is the best move, whether it is beneficial to them, to have a constant reminder of this awful time on them. Or if the chosen symbol is really the best option. (Example: I heard a tattoo artist say she discussed a tattoo with a DV survivor, who wanted a cage that a bird flew out of as a ‘survival’ tattoo. The artist advised against having the cage, the bad thing, on her body, and just have a pretty bird, flying all free, instead). But that’s it.

I got my first real traditional tattoo on my forearm. My gf at the time clearly didn’t like it. They didn’t outright say so but you can sort of tell when somone is being a grump about it, they were messaging with somone they knew and said (dunno if they were half joking or not) that “x person doesn’t really like it” they showed me a pic of x persons tattoos and it was hilarious cause they were a grey wash semi realistic tatt of religious imagery or something which (to me) comes off just as lame and tacky (each to their own of course) legit I should have just told ex “suck it up b**ch you don’t get an opinion” thank god that ended

The cousin one doesn’t have enough information to judge. Does that person have any other tattoos? A history of mental// physical issues? Is that person sensitive to teasing? Could they have abuse marks that their hiding?
I literally would never want a partner to tattoo my name on themselves - even after I pass away - names are just too much. Actually asking for it due to jealousy of a deceased sibling?! Nah. Nope. Run. Run away immediately and don't look back.
I think if someone does a 180 and even takes the time to reflect.. they should be congratulated. Most people are NOT willing to do that. And they're definitely not willing to admit they were wrong. Story 3: losing an older sibling is so hard. I have a memorial tattoo of my brothers favorite flower and the flowers of the two birth month flowers of his miscarriaged kids. His signature is the stem of the flowers. Any man that comes into my life will have to deal with it.

For the first post, she isn't a friend to "Alice" . A friend would embrace someone's struggle and lift them, they wouldn't use that pain to demean them. Too many people are snakes in the grass, they laugh at your pain and struggle and still you are convinced they care about you and are a friend.
Everything u said is true but it seems like she understood her wrongdoing in the end and genuinely wanted to do better which is awesome. I think everyone deserves a chance to change and grow! We’re all human. Hopefully she’s a better friend now :)

I was skeptical about that first story as it was being read, but I was actually really impressed with the OP's reflection and explanation of her plans moving forward. I feel as though I actually learned from how she presented it about how to perfectly and meaningfully show that you have learned from your mistakes and genuinely are looking towards improving your actions and mending relationships. 💜
100% disagree about scars. Scars tell a story of what you’ve gone through. My wife has scars from when she gave birth. I seriously think they’re beautiful. I’ve got a lot of scars myself. I don’t try to hide them. My wife doesn’t either.

Many years ago, I had my sister's name tattooed on me, and she had my name tattooed on her. We were close. She lost her son to cancer. She was never able to fully recover from that loss. My sister died Oct. 29 of last year. I miss her. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up the phone to call her. I'm proud to wear her name on my shoulder. I'm the only one left from my family.

It truly is to each their own. "Live and let live" applies here. Just because it isn't a choice you'd make, doesn't mean it's wrong for someone else. Especially when it comes to personal expression.
For example, medusa and semicolon tattoos. Would I get one? No. I don't feel comfortable personally putting vulnerability and trauma out for others to see. I also don't want the trauma that stains the soul on my skin. But I'd never tell anyone else to not get those tattoos.
Good on OP for taking the time to self-reflect and turn things around.
With regards to the first one, I have quotes from Harry Potter tattooed on me that relate to my past experiences with depression/anxiety, it represents who I am and what I've been through to get to a healthy mental state. It never crossed my mind whether other people would think its 'good look' and it never fails to suprise me how most people think thats the reason people get tattoos.

This was so great! I listen to reddit readers on RUclips every time I’m doing housework. The AITA, Wedding Shaming, Entitled People, Nuclear Revenge & AITAH subs are awesome. Mark Narrations is a great one to listen to as he often reads updated stories. It’d be cool if you did tattoo-centric reddit stories…I’d be listening to that for sure 👍

Per the first one: I have tattoos that relate to bad times. Just got one Saturday, actually. Sometimes they are reminders of personal resilience or symbols of never going through that again. Specifically I got an open bear trap with a heart in the middle to represent not being stuck again. I came out of a massively abusive relationship last year and have since been diagnosed with PTSD. I got it as a reminder that I won’t be trapped again, hence the trap being open. I may have been stuck before, but it’s not happening again and I know what to look out for now with early warning signs. While the tattoo is a dark concept, it makes sense to the person who’s body it’s on.
I been hesitant on looking up self harm scars and getting tattoos to cover them so I wanted to ask, if you have any videos you made about them yet? I been wanting to get tattoos to cover up my scars but I held off on doing any research yet and since this is the first tattoo channel I subbed too, I figured I ask you instead. Sorry if this is off topic. Also I haven't looked through all your videos yet so my apologies again if you already have.

I covered up one wrist when I was ready, love it. I can still see my scars but now I also see a beautiful piece of art (a symbol that means a lot to me) first. To me it means I'm finishing with the old way of coping and am now going to move forward. It's been 7 years now and I've never regret my decision. I'm in the process of setting up an appointment for my other wrist right now, I am ready. Stay strong.
I covered some sh scars on my thigh and it was the best decision i’ve made in awhile ❤it hurt pretty badly but it was worth the pain since i don’t have to look at them and be reminded all the time that they exist
a dear friend of mine covered a big scar on her wrist from an attempt. The tattoo turned out beautiful. It‘s a king protea, an endemic South African flower that needs fire to release its seeds. It is the plant equivalent of a phoenix - a very fitting and beautiful motif for such a tattoo in my opinion.
I always feel so bad for these people to the point where I question if they’re fake.
But truly I think there are people that delusional out there and I’m sad for the people who have to deal with them. 🍎
1:25 i have a self harm scar that was large enough to be quite noticeable so i got it tattooed in as a rainbow to transform a terrible time into something beautiful in my opinion and it’s so much better now. only vaguely realated but point is you can deal with bad things with tattoos to make them more positive

The first one annoyed me, we all get tattoos for our lives, for what we want, finding comfort in a character that goes through the same experience is great. It’s like getting mad at people for the Medusa tattoo, or the “;” tattoo, they have bigger meaning, and are sweet.

About story #1, to me that sounds like saying I'm f*cking stupid for wanting a medusa tattoo as a SA survivor and a semicolon for my depression and because I could have given up on life so many times already. And that just sucks.

I think the silver lining of the last story is that by behaving in that way the gf revealed her true manipulative self. There are a lot of subtlety controlling people in relationships who treat their partners like garbage but in ways that can be gaslit away. Sometimes it takes them doing such an obviously horrible thing for the person they are mistreating to realise what’s happening.

To the person who left the response to that first entry: Why do younger people think everything negative comes from a boomer? I am a boomer and very open minded. I do not have any tattoos but mainly because it wasn't done when I was growing up in a strict family and, to be honest, I never saw the appeal. However, it does not mean I am put off by them. Please, do not paint everyone in a generation with the same brush. We are just as varied a group of people as your generation.

Listen. If your friend wants to commemorate a bad experience, that’s their decision, and maybe a way of coping.
Maybe, if done respectfully, you could question whether it is the best move, whether it is beneficial to them, to have a constant reminder of this awful time on them. Or if the chosen symbol is really the best option. (Example: I heard a tattoo artist say she discussed a tattoo with a DV survivor, who wanted a cage that a bird flew out of as a ‘survival’ tattoo. The artist advised against having the cage, the bad thing, on her body, and just have a pretty bird, flying all free, instead).
But that’s it.

The last story left me like WTF?! Your partner can't tell you what you can or can't get tattooed, especially if their reason is some type of weird jealousy. I'm a female who got a memorial tattoo for a male friend who passed away and I can guarantee you that if my husband would've told me anything about it, he would now be my ex.
I've always thought of reddit as a true depiction of human existence. It has the best, the worst, and everything in-between.

I got my first real traditional tattoo on my forearm. My gf at the time clearly didn’t like it. They didn’t outright say so but you can sort of tell when somone is being a grump about it, they were messaging with somone they knew and said (dunno if they were half joking or not) that “x person doesn’t really like it” they showed me a pic of x persons tattoos and it was hilarious cause they were a grey wash semi realistic tatt of religious imagery or something which (to me) comes off just as lame and tacky (each to their own of course) legit I should have just told ex “suck it up b**ch you don’t get an opinion” thank god that ended

I told my friend his tattoo was stupid the second I saw it on the first day he got it. He got a shamrock with his initials on his calf. The stupid part is his initials spelled A.R.M. So the dingbat tattooed the word arm on his leg. Bwahahahaha

The cousin one doesn’t have enough information to judge. Does that person have any other tattoos? A history of mental// physical issues? Is that person sensitive to teasing? Could they have abuse marks that their hiding?

I think if someone does a 180 and even takes the time to reflect.. they should be congratulated. Most people are NOT willing to do that. And they're definitely not willing to admit they were wrong. I don't think the person from the first story was unhappy with themselves..
