Lord Jamar Debates Whether or Not Men Can Enjoy Female Hip Hop

  • While discussing Erykah Badu's direct diss towards rapper, Iggy Azalea, during the Soul Train Awards last November, Lord Jamar recalls meeting Badu before her singing days when she was known as an emcee. Further into the conversation with DJ Vlad, the Brand Nubian rapper admitted that he's been criticized for sounding sexist with his opinions when asked his thoughts about Badu as a lyricist. "I don't really remember." He said, "I'm not into female rap, so I'm the wrong one to ask." He said he may listen to female rappers occasionally, but he wouldn't go out his way to purchase their album.

Usually agree with him but not on this. Hyper Masculinity is TOXIC and is the reason why men think other men can't enjoy female hip hop. All in the fear of being called gay. Masculinity so fragile that you think listening to female rap makes you gay. The only thing that makes you gay is BEING gay. He had not legit argument other than the typical. "it's gay or weird" as a guy. This is why you should teach boys to be men instead of teaching them to display this level of hyper masculinity defined by society's gender norms, which only shows insecurity.

    • @th3azscorpio

+JB Blackson Was just about to say the same thing. Real talk. It's funny because I know plenty of STRAIGHT men who like and will bump lil kim, missy elliot, and even nicki-hehe. Lord jamar is still trying to remain in a time where the strict and rigid conforms of masculinity demanded to be followed without examination, and where no one is allowed to break the mold.

This is Lord Jamar's biggest problem. He doesn't just hear music...he is overly concerned with WHO is doing it. That isn't being a fan, that's being a critic. There are some nice female rappers who made timeless music. Why would any man be ashamed of playing a song just because of WHO was rapping on it? Brat was nice, Rage was nice, Latifah, etc. etc. Corny shit. And I wish someone would think robbing me was the look because of wtf I was listening to...gtfoh.

I RESPECT Female Rappers. And I like to hear their Rhymes, there's alot of clever Female MCs that can really rap. But I usually don't check for Female Rappers. Nicki is Good but I still haven't listen to any of her Albums. Lauryn Hill Yes. Badu Yes. But us men that Rap is the main thing.

Simple answer no we can't. They write songs for women to relate to EXCEPT Missy. That's why in my opinion she ain't one of the best female rappers, she's one of the best rappers period. Most of female mc's write songs about love or about relationships from their perspective. WE don't give a fuck about that shit.

+antoine lopez There are people cant relate to what rappers say in their songs. There are a lot of people that listen to rappers like Gucci mane, but he has fans that never set foot in the hood. There are a lot of rappers that brag about being rich. Most people dont know what its like to be rich. I love drill and trap music, but I was never part of a gang, I was never arrested, and I never sold drugs. I really dont relate to what most of these niggas are talking about in their songs. You dont have to relate to an artist to like them. And there are female rappers that talk about the same things that male rappers talk about.

Erykah Badu said what she said and kept movin'. I didn't see anything wrong with it. Iggy literally clogged the wires with her nonsense for months on end. I thank goodness that it's finally over. Her face and voice got on my last damn nerve. I bought Lauryn Hill's album simply because I love the way she sang. Every single song knocked. Wonderful piece of art. Summer of '98 was so fun for me. I get what he's saying about female hip hop though. A lot of brothas feel the same way. My favorites were Yo-Yo, Bo$$, Mia X, Bahamadia and of course Lil' Kim and them. Basically, he's saying that it's kinda fruity for a brotha to ride around bumpin' Kim. Typically men that like other men in a sexual way bump her. Just sayin'..... Oh and Vladimir, bae you played yo'self right here.

Sonja Blade, Nikki D, Bahamadia*, Latifah, MC lyte, Da Brat, L Boogie, even Foxy Brown, Eve, and JJ fad, Salt & Peppa.. Just in these times I can't relate to any female rappers, it's rare now that you hear females with bars- majority are over sexualized and talking about topics that are strictly for females. Nicki Minaj, to *shrugs* I dunno honestly..

So Lord Jamar is saying that it's weird if I listen to a female rapper period? How does that make any sense? If u really want to be honest, I always found some female MC's to be a lot more skilled than their male contemporaries. As a straight male i dont really relate to lil kim's subject matter but I relate to the subject matter of a Rah Digga or Rapsody. I respect Lil Kim as an MC but i just dont get down with what she talks about bcuz that isnt what im into. But people tend to forget that Lord Jamar's mind works out of three terms most of the time. These terms are, STRAIGHT, BLACK, MALE. If u are white, gay, or a female then Lord Jamar sees u as being inferior. AGAIN, this is HIS MIND and thats what u are gonna get everytime. Which makes me ask the question, Why does VLAD keep inviting these same people on who are gonna give the same answer to every question that is asked? I respect Lord Jamar for his contributions to hip hop but u are gonna get the same shit over and over again.

  • @ek9409

well... i really like lord jamar's approach on his interview. i respect the fact that he said what he said and cleared the topic the way he did. if i could do that as a woman my life now would be much more in control of how things worked out for me. and i try, am not saying i ain't scared to speak up am just bringing up the fact that we need more people like him to show that expressing ourselves can go both ways. i mean he flipped tha script an showed his opinions on what the question was about. And that's the way it goes.

  • @CaliCool91
    @CaliCool91 8 лет назад +1

As a whole they were both right. Vlad was right to point out certain tracks by female rappers that go hard and can be played anywhere and Jamar was right to say I'm really not riding around bumping their albums. Lauryn Hill is the only female rapper whose album I've played in my own free time.

Jamal has an ego that doesn't match up with reality and the mind of a child. You know how young people view their elder idols as examples of what they want to become when they get older, well he's the opposite and definitely an example of what young adults do not want to grow into and become as they get older.

      He's very closed-minded and dismissive.
And that's just 2 negative qualities he harnesses, there's hundreds more and he's just an all-around negative / shit person in general. And I'm not going to list those hundreds of negative qualities because I'll be here forever and I have a life.
And it's all these negative qualities that he has (one of which is self-centeredness) which is why so many people don't like him.

Fuck and opinion that girl can spit. Fuck what a hater got to say if she wasn't saying something or spitting fire she wouldn't be up almost 70-80M's talk about a female rapper? Bitch is a international superstar and mind you she just halfway into this shit, don't play yourself and to my guys if a female is spitting and she spitting heat or not talking about dick, cars, bags, & heels just give her credit bruh. Lord Jamar is kinda right. You see the thing is female rappers rap about doing female shit and finessing niggas and all that other dumb shit. It's very rare that a female MC will give a hip hop listener a male perspective on anything. It's all about what they could get from niggas for free and how sexy they are and all that. At least that's what most of em be saying. That's why I'm glad he mentioned Lauryn Hill because she out of all of them, she gave an all round perspective. I feel like
female rappers reach out to other female rappers and was not meant for us men to relate to it. Most female rappers don't even rap about some real life shit or some philosophical stuff. I myself have never listened to female rappers and the only one I ever liked was one verse from Foxy Brown on that song with Nas ''Affirmative
    Action''.
