I don't know how I feel about making Vixen into an African American rather than a full blooded African. Feels like they could have kept her as an African girl who was studying in the United States, which is something that happens all the time.
I do enjoy these webtoons, especially with a focus on B and C listers.

I wholeheartedly agree and I really don't know why they changed it.
The only thing that really comes to mind right now is cowardice, like the primarily American market can't accept someone who's not American?

The first part is weird, as despite everything else so far being fairly well written, I wouldn’t be surprised if some people got the impression she was from Ghana, or at least some other place in Africa due to how she left and how much of a fish out of water she is in NYC

I’d be interested to know the average age of the people reading these webtoons. Maybe I’m just an Old now, but I’m kind of over the de-aging of established characters to make them “relatable”. Not everyone’s lives start at 18. With Vixen especially, I always think of her as a strong, stable, confident adult, and I didn’t really get that from this interpretation.

    • @ExeErdna

Yeah, I know Manga has age ranges this is techincally still in a "YA" in American standards. I too would like some more slice of life yet with some 25+ characters. I dislike aging a stable character to be "relatable" I had the same issues when they aged Jon Kent up.

I'm 20, but i mainly read YA/NA kinda comics!! I love this one so far, But i did not read any of the DC comics, i did watch some CW shows, which is obviously not comparable. I do believe webtoon focusses more on the YA category, as the adults generally go more towards the traditional comics.

This looks fun, i even like the art, and I like Wayne Family Adventures so I'm sure I'll like the writing to this.
However I'm having a hard time getting over the retcon to her origin. Superheroes are already massively overrepresented by Americans. I enjoy when other countries can get some attention. But to make matters worse this takes place in NYC. ...
It feels likes half if not most heroes either in reside in NYC or in a NYC inspired city. It's now so overdone its become the generic comic setting. DC and Marvel really need to start hiring writers that don't live on the north east coast. Preferably some that live outside the US too. We live in an era of remote work. There's no excuse to not be able to draw from a wider range of life experience than NYC.

    • @DoveJS
      @DoveJS 2 года назад +14

On the upside, it's possible Mari could move elsewhere and/or travel a lot later on. She's in college right now and they're just setting her up but there's no reason she couldn't decide to transfer or drop-out or they might skip ahead after she graduates. But yeah...
Maybe as someone else suggested her family immigrated to the US when she was very small. I was surprised they said she was from NC but I always am whenever we get mentioned (usually bad when it's the news ugh.) We do have a lot of people from other countries here, including those going to college (there's the Research Triangle of Durham-Cary-Raleigh which is pretty big in medicine and technology.) So not having her coming from some country in Africa and/or not at least keeping her in NC seems like a bit of a missed opportunity but then I guess it'd make less sense for the other supers to be around and it's not like she's focusing on either of those industries.
TBH I'm kinda amazed they used NYC instead of Metropolis, though that's just an expy of NYC kinda lol. I'm just grateful they chose college instead of high school. Overall, your statement still stands. Other settings would be great!

So then you like the show.

    • @DoveJS
      @DoveJS 2 года назад +21

@@zufalllx Maybe they were straightforward in the past and other people teased them for liking Powerless, judging from the way they phrased it as "one of the people." That section could've used the word few in there, to fully express that this fan feels like they're in the minority, but that's how I understood it.
It's similar to how you're trying to teach them better for using the word unironically in an awkward manner. You could've let it go but you had to make sure this person understood they made a mistake with their use of terminology, instead of a mistake over what they enjoyed, because no one can possibly like things that have flaws in them. Other more vocal and critical fans don't always allow for that.
Maybe people started using the term "ironically enjoyed" as a white lie to protect themselves within online communities for having "bad taste" in content. Then others began specifying unironically to clarify that they weren't being glib.
Those are just the context clues I ran with and I know I'm assuming a lot about other people. Maybe I'm wrong about their situation. Also, maybe you were genuinely confused and hadn't considered or presumed any of this.

I feel like a party pooper because after 1 chapter, I am not a fan. I just feel that they painted the character of Vixen over with a generic plucky YA mc brush.
Also, as a West African who grew up in Nigeria, and then went to school abroad, I'm not fond of her being more American than African, although I'm sure many people will be able to relate to that. Just feels like non American black people don't get to have the good stuff most of the time.
And as for the tone...I don't think it suits her, as I've said, and the art is gorgeous, but imo feels like it's trying *too* hard to be wacky. Idk, it's hard to articulate after 2 weeks of insomnia.
Props where it's due tho: The Ghanaian stuff looked super authentic (Nigeria and Ghana are almost neighbours and from the people I've met, we share wuite a few things in common).

It personally feels bad that they changed her to be from the USA rather than keeping her African. She should have been an African exchange student. Do research and (if you have the resources; they do) hire people from that culture to help you as paid experts. De-aging annoys me as it keeps pushing the cultural idea that younger is better and forgetting to have adults be main characters in stories. At least shes still an adult in this rather than * sigh* yet another Teenager. We get WAY to much Child, Teen and young adult viewpoints and representation!!! More stories of 27+ confident full adults who know who they are yet are still curious and learning/living enjoying life! I'm also sick of 'school' stories. The school system sucks! And I want to see more stories of people beyond that...
The cameos feel forced and too soon. The first issue is a time to let the main character shine. Feeling the NEED to have a rich white man who is 'cooler' and more well known/beloved swoop in and save her JUST as she was about to discover and unlock her own amazing powers so that she doesn't EVEN learn about them yet feels wrong to me, feels icky. Beast boy feels weird/forced and totally useless to the plot. What does he even do besides creep her out?
Why can't we just have a confident, sexy fully adult African Supermodel?!
Why did they feel the need to 1) reduce how African she is? 2) Make her younger more naive and less fully mature? 3) add in other male more 'well established' characters immediately without even giving her the chance to tell her own story and stand on her own? 4) Yet another story set in New York City; Why? (there's other places in the world! Media is over saturated with New York, enough!)
They probably have answers to these and it still seems enjoyable but I feel like I'd prefer the original version more personally. I feel like I'd dislike their answers. Unless they just were inspired and thought it was cool and truly innocently didn't think about the deeper implications. I'd be ok with it if that's the answer.
    However:
Having her change in these ways Americanizes her more, makes her less unique and more generic. This is NOT more appealing to me. Especially on making her Raised in the USA instead of From Africa I really don't like how that makes me feel.
It really implies being from Africa is inferior, 'less-relatable', less marketable, less desired or otherwise... just 'lesser' and that's wrong. They do realize its a whole planet and not just USA?
Crazy pitch why not make her From Africa and even have the comic *Gasp* set in Africa? or have her be an exchange student in London, Prague, Berlin, Rio, etc! And hey they CAN actually hire writers FROM those places and consult with other writers from other places and backgrounds they have the resources.... I feel like being cheap, insensitive and lazy are not good justifications...
You can read stories and relate to characters who are living and doing things not in the USA! Why is it that so many stories are set in the USA or an entirely fictional other planet or version of Earth but fewer are set in other real world places? Why are 50% or more of the stories that are set in the USA set once again in New York city? Why? It makes them more bland frankly. Who is surprises by NEW York?
Really hoping it was the inspired story options because the other options feel bad.
Sorry for the overly critical and negative rant in what essentially seems like a very fun beautiful comic. Overall it would be fine if it was a new character (still I'm sick of New York and want more characters of at least 25+ personally)
It is better to be positive and enjoy art and it does look very well done, well written, beautiful art, etc.

They probably aged down Vixen because Webcomic readers are mainly young adults. People who are 30+ years old rarely know what Webcomic is. Thats why a lot of manga and comics in Webcomic are about teenagers or young adults. Its based on Webcomic's target readers. Plus, Superman and Batman, two of the most popular comic book characters are in their 30s or 40s. So, i dont think there's any problem with DC de-aging a not-so-popular character.
They used Vixen because of her name. She still is very well-known by youngsters like me. Many people grew up with Justice League Unlimited and she was pretty popular back then. She might not be well known like Superman, Batman, Nightwing or Green Lantern, but she has her fanbase. If they created a new character just for this one webcomic series, no one would read them because it has no name recognition.
I dont think this webcomic is bad. In fact, its pretty fun. If people can accept communist Superman, Hydra Captain America, vampire version of superheroes and Batman fused with Joker who became a god, then we can accept a fun and simple story about Vixen's young adult life.
You want a stoy about 27+ years old who explores life? Read Silk. Its about Cindy Moon aka Silk who is 28 years old and her journey of life after being trapped in a bunker for 10 years.

I fell in love with it so quickly that I bought the remaining 5! 😂 Vixen has always been one of my favorite superheroes and for the longest time I felt like she's never been given a chance to truly shine while other characters have been over done to death. Although it's a little disappointing that she's born in Ghana and raised in America with this story. (At least I think that is how it's being done?) I'm just looking forward to there being something for Vixen with a hope it will translate to some bigger things in the future.

My knowledge of Vixen came from JL Unlimited so I understand older fans being upset with the origin change even though I'm neutral about it. That being said, there are so few (mainstream) stories about African American immigrant kids/children of immigrants, I couldn't be happier.

My favorite Vixen is her JLU series but mostly the episode when her,Hawkgirl,Huntress and Black Canary teamed up to survive a fight with a brainwashed Wonder Woman.

    *Some thoughts:*
I like her being from the Carolinas. Too often comic writers paint the Southern states as a backwater joke, forgetting the majority of the population doesn't live in LA or NY.
I don't like how every animal themed DC character just randomly appears in Mari's life.
I get she's de-aged for this story, but the design they used isn't exactly "Super-Model"? I personally think she looks cuter and I love cute characters, but... that's not Mari. It's literally a plot point that she's hot.
I do like that she's starting off as an everyday-woman, with the possibility to grow. BUT I'm sad it's done here where it's going to be a short series that won't build on it.
    I also love the art-style.

i feel like the old justice league cartoon being pretty much my first exposure to DC characters gave me a messed up sense of who the biggest DC characters were haha!
i always thought vixen must have been a famous comic character before she was in the show! and when that green latern movie came out, i was like "who is hal jordan? where is john?" and also being surprised that it turns out there's also a hawkMAN in the comics haha!
but yeah i always thought vixen had the coolest powers in the justice league! until i saw bwana beast in brave and the bold, he is ridiculous and amazing lol

It's always nice to be introduced to a character I've never heard of; almost certainly my fault. This would probably benefit from a close reading, because at the moment I'm just seeing all the easy comparisons to other characters and that's not fair to the creators of this one.

Brave and the Bold not only paired Vixen with B'wana Beast... but also made him one of the most heroic characters with a sad end. It is amazing how good the more serious moments of that show was. One of the best I tell you. Also made it imposible to see Vixen date anyone but B'wana XD. They are shipped for life in my heart.

My favorite version of Vixen is the Imaginext Super Friends version just because I love that toy line, but second place goes to the JLU one soully for the seen were she crushes some crooks by making herself as heavy as a elephant and some how doesn't kill them in the process. It felt so Looney Tunes.

Sure, I enjoy how she looked in Justice League Unlimited, but this dorky first timer Vixen is just as entertaining. It gives more relatability to her. Didn't know about this but I'm down just for more Vixen representation so thanks for bringing this to my attention, some of changes definitely strike far with her new origin and fluciation in age but I'll give it a shot since I only feel I know her most from team-ups with JLD, SS, and briefly in Animal Man (hope Buddy shows up in this) as opposed to standing on her own. It's funny how Bruce kinda shoe-horned his way into this but keeping the "Bat-Dad" attitude is still fun to see.

Looks cute, but do hope we get an alternate older take that's closer to classic VIxen, not instead of this younger americanised version, but just so there's more Vixen in general (also DC needs to cast Danai Gurira or Florence Kasumba as her already in a live version)
