Whether you want to study OB.GYN or pediatrics, you will need this video, because the APGAR score is universal, thanks to a brilliant female physician named Virginia Apgar who introduced this score.
Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration are the five elements of the score.
Apgar score is calculated after 1 minute from delivery (to assess how the neonate perfprmED in utero and during labor), and after 5 minutes (to assess the response to our efforts of resuscitation), you can continue again every 5 minutes; i.e. 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and so forth.
A score of 7 or more is good.
A score of 3 or less is horrible. (Risk of neurological damage such as cerebral palsy or CP)
I have a mnemonic to memorize the five elements.

when in the office i tend to use the R.A.G.U method more often, its a much more effective and quick way of judging a newborns condition

Today's Google Doodle led me here. :) Thought I'd learn a bit more about APGAR. My son had a 9 at 1 minute because he wasn't crying. He wasn't struggling to breathe, he was just chilling out. He got a 10 at 5 minutes because he started crying.
