2020 Hyundai Kona Electric - too small or just right?

- The Kona Electric has been criticized for being too small, but is that really the case? Does the average driver really need more room? Today, I take a look at the passenger space in the back, whether or not you can fit golf clubs in the trunk and how many bags you can take with you.
The Kona Electric's compact size is part of the secret for its impressive range - it is lighter than most electric cars and was designed with electrification in mind, so doesn't give up any storage space in the back to accommodate the batteries, but the slightly raised floor does compromise the rear seating slightly.
And we answer the question "will a black Labrador fit comfortably in the trunk area?"

I am 6'2 on the heavy side [250] and found it to be comfortable in front and back even sitting behind myself.
This video is very helpful especially when you placed the luggages upwards in the trunk. Got an idea how big it is. Very useful 🎉
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent review, thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Finally, I've found a video where someone shows that golf clubs fit in the car well enough!
I have a Golf and even then have to take the drivers out! This will be my next car, unless a cheaper E-Niro finds it's way onto the market!
happy to be of service
The reason why I am searching RUclips is because I want to know whether I can put my golf club bag in this car. Finally get the answer here. Thanks.
Glad to help
Very useful review, best regards
Thanks, happy to help
It's not a spacious car, but we usually have two medium sized adults and two kids in the car, at occasion with the addition of an 18-year old but very seldom so it does its job. One week groceries for the five of us fits nicely.
You also have to consider proportions, I have short legs for my height which I think is the usual for east Asian people. That means I tend to sit comfortably in Korean and Japanese cars which isn't always the case for my fellow nationals here in Scandinavia.
To be fair, the e-Niro would have been better for us, but at the time we could get our car at such a low price that an e-Niro would have been 30% more.
"Annette" loved it
Finally, somebody got it!
ultimate test for me is does my bike fit in the trunk? Very nice Test! Like your dog, too :-)
I think you will be disappointed about the bike. Tried to fit my mountain bike in yesterday and it was a squeeze. I think you would have to remove the front wheel for it to work.
to be honest, that´s what I expected. As the i3 trunk size was ok for me, I expect the Kona to be even a bit bigger. So no worries!
Natasha is a great cohost.
Thanks, she’s the star
I am 5:8 and I can sleep in the back seat quite comfotably.
Very helpful, thank you! Just curious, what’s the full length in the back with the seats folded down? Would a case that’s 49x26x30.5 inches or so fit?
I think it would be a tight fit but it would probably work. Lengthwise you have about 60” with the seats down and the opening is 39”x28”. But the actual length is shorter due to the slope of the rear hatch and the effective height is a little lower because the seats don’t fold completely flat - however the roof is higher than the rear opening so with a bit of fiddling I think it would work!
I just wish you could get a decent trailer hitch for it that uses a 2" receiver..
With the Kona you can. The allowed trailer weight isn't much, but you can hook on a simple trailer to get that new fridge home.
How about the driver side or is it roomy I am 6*3 and 225lbs just curious I drive the EUV bolt and it had a lot of legroom and the steering was not close on my legs I had space
Plenty of room for the driver - my son is 6'4" and he is quite comfortable in it
They should have made it about 1 foot longer. This would add 4 or 5 inches to the back seat legroom, which is desperately needed. And also add more room for storage in the back.
Hyundai missed the mark on this.
Yup. The Niro is a little longer, with more space in the back for storage. The Ioniq 5 is significantly bigger, from what I hear
My question, HOW TALL ARE YOU? Will a 6'3 man fit inside this?
I’m 5’10”. My son is 6’4”and he fits quite comfortably in the front. He said it was ok in the back, but he looked a little cramped.
No spare?
Nope, just a repair/mobility kit, like many cars these days. It does come with roadside assistance, but that will probably leave you stranded for some time.
@@trackrekord And we motorists allowed the makers to do this, including giving us the electronic handbrake.
We should be ashamed and so should the motoring media.
Don’t get me started on the electronic handbrake. . . .
@@trackrekord I had a Passatt for a few years and the ehb failed three times......never again.
@@chips1889 Electronic handbrake is a reason to buy a car with long warranty...
No, it is a small rear seat car. I am 187cm tall, with the driver seat adjusted for me I can’t even get into the rear seat.
Martin Östlund yup, you are a few inches taller than me, I can see that. I would only suggest the rear seat for occasional adult passengers for short trips
I'm Sorry, I have the Kona EV and my 6'2" height makes getting into the back seat impossible. Even the front room with the seat all the way back is just tolerable, but then nothing but a small child would have a chance sitting behind me. If they refuse to add a couple inches to the car for the back seat then take the thing out completely and make it a 2 seater. Another year and a half for the lease and I'm looking for something larger, maybe the Mustang Mach e or Tesla.
My 6’4” son sat in the back and said it wasn’t too bad. I think the Kia Niro has a little more room - but I agree it is tight. If the Mach-E would have been available I would have definitely considered it instead
Nice review. A dog usually goes in a cage.
Thanks, the dog in the back was for illustration purposes.
Not mine
Far too small if you have kids.
depends on the size of the kids . . .
@@trackrekord I can't imagine putting rear facing child seats in the back or stuffing a stroller in the trunk. It's all way too tight.
Perhaps at age 5 to 14 it'd be ok.
I suppose one could be ok with it.
I agree it’s small - it all depends what you need it for. For us, it fits the bill.
