I mean he didn’t really speak to get to the Presidency. His actions as one of the best generals in American history did but it is a funny play on words
Grant couldn't have fot for Rob't E. Lee in Mexico because Capt. Rob't E Lee was an officer on Gen. Winfield Scott's staff. There is a possibility that their paths crossed in that conflict, but very fleetingly
They met once and only in passing. Grant was a lieutenant at the time and Lee was on the General staff. Longstreet knew Grant personally from the war and even after it
Notice how 3 people important to the Union’s success - Lincoln, Sherman, and Grant - were shopkeeps at one moment of their lives, had mental breakdowns or close family crisis, and rose through the ranks on merit alone; where as most of the south officers and generals were of southern high class with ties to the slave trade of which most of their wealth was dependent. Don’t get me wrong, those southern officers knew how to fight a war in the Mexican war; it was that mindset which aided them in the first months of the civil war - however they heavily underestimated Sherman and Grant abilities
Depending on who you ask. We'll never know for certain since we weren't there. Both were definitely good organizers and leaders. Both had their share of failures and successes. Both sides had plenty of heros and villains. Overall it was a brutal event and there is no glory in any of it.

or Jeff Davis's. The Confederate commanders at Ft. Donelson were Floyd and Pillow, both political generals. They didn't do very well. Lee's first small command in Western Virginia was beset with difficulties from the political general who was Lee's senior in rank. Davis doggedly supported Braxton Bragg, an officer who performed so poorly that his senior subordinates mutinied against him while he had a Union army under siege.
Benjamin Butler was pretty effective in Virginia. Drove the traitors out of Fort Monroe and Hampton. Allowed escaped slaves to live and work near the fort. Encouraged the American Missionary Society to come to Hampton and establish a school, which became Hampton University.
@@Beanmaster73Grant disintegrated all of the Southern army from Fort Donaldson to Vicksburg to Jackson and then Sherman's march to the sea and cleanup of the Carolinas. Well who ever this chap is , he was incredibly intelligent, thank god ! Union was in trouble without Grant , although it seems they were getting a little better with time and experience, but nothing like Grant saved the Union , don’t understand why he’s so maligned, he was actually very popular in his time , for obvious reasons , plus he was a fair and decent man , didn’t say flawless but decent person and hated slavery good man
General Grant was maligned because by the beginning of the 20th century, Confederate apologists and "Lost Cause" mythmakers had wrested control of the narrative away from Union defenders. Also, the Temperance Movement had gained lots of traction in this country, and a scandal-plagued POTUS who drank liquor was easy to criticize.

I love that when Lincoln was told “he drinks,” Lincoln said find out what and I’ll send him a case. I need him. He fights.
I think he said he wanted to know the brand of whiskey, so he could send a barrel to each of his other generals.
Basically the only issue that the North would have with the war. They just needed a general that would pursue.
@@marksnyder8022Marksnyder, I came to say the same thing.
It was after Grant won a battle, I believe.
"I'm no speaker."

Be funny if became speaker of the house

It was a different time though. I think he was beloved for his leadership during the war and that propelled him into the White House.

he was a famously shy and brief speaker. his acceptance speech of his first presidential nomination was barely a paragraph long.
“I’m asking you to lead.”
(Super badass music kicks in as Grant begins to grasp the possibilities)
Grant and Truman, both nondescript shopkeepers until greatness, was unexpectedly pressed upon them.
Hey that’s a really good point ! I just love thoughtful discourse 👍
also both having a middle name comprising only of "S."
I love the part where in the first fime, Robert E Lee asks about grant. And Longstreet says he fought for you in Mexico and Lee said, "he did"?

When in the course of human events, injustice must be stood up to! Good men, won't sit and do nothing! To let evil run rampant!
Unleashed the beast. This was the new total war, you may lose some battles but you are going to win the war.
Man, these are really awesome clips!
