Its not the sewers..those are called ''acequias'' and they are cannals where water runs from melted ice in the mountains to irrigate the trees, otherwise there would not be any because Mendoza is built on a dessert which is as dry as a desert around Dubai for example.
Thanks Juan! I did wonder what their purpose is as they seemed a bit strange to be lined throughout the entire city. However, for a first time visitor they were a bit dangerous at first but then everything was fine as you got accustomed to them.
