I was a senior at Yale in 1973 and was rehearsal pianist and John Mauceri’s assistant. I only saw a snippet of this in recent years in a documentary about Bernstein. It was aired on PBS Great Performances shortly after our Vienna European premiere. Back then things were recorded on big videotape for airing, way before VHS or Beta or DVD’s. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to see this on RUclips after all these years! That is Michael Hume as the Celebrant. TV and movie fans might recognize Robert Picardo singing “God Said Let there Be Light...and it was good....”. He has had a big career spanning from Broadway to movies and TV series China Beach and Star Trek Voyager as the Robot doctor!
I am very thrilled to see this- I was so afraid the music world would lose this masterpiece- Bernstein's genius is timeless- his finger on the pulse of Catholicism is amazing!
There was a DVD produced at the Vatican. It has been panned by most critics, partly because it was too "tame" and missed the radical nature of the original. I wish the original PBS version would be made available on DVD.
stu lewis What do you mean? Did they alter the lyrics? Was the choreography not as great? Or what? I’m quite curious. P.S. Just to be sure, this is the PBS version you’re talking about, right? If not, can it be found on RUclips anywhere?
YES, YES, YES...I think Michael Hume was excellent, too! I have seen several stagings of Mass. This production was not my favorite staging...but Michael Hume mesmerized me! So glad to find this production after years of searching!
Is the original production available on video anywhere? Is out there in RUclips land? I've been seeking this since I first saw it on TV when I was a teenager. Or is this the version that was televised on PBS that I saw?
Hey Orpheum, I'm doing my dissertation on this piece. Any chance you'd be willing to send this to me for research? PhD student at the National School of Music in Mexico City.
Hi Joshua, could I ask what your dissertation focused on, and if it's available anywhere? Giving a presentation on this Mass in a few weeks so looking for good research at the moment
No, I won't give you permission to polish this turd till it ensures your redemption. I am reluctantly impartial. Time has a way of catching up to all our fancies

I've been waiting for someone to post this version for 15 years. THANK YOU FOR THIS GIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this. I watched the Yale batch rehearse in Woolsey Hall way back when must have been late '72 or early '73.
Thanks for posting this.

It didn't help that the audience burst into thunderous applause just after the Celebrant smashed the monstrance.
Michael Hune was magnificent! Knew him at the time dating Connie. Those were the days!

Best effort thus far. Good children!
This composition by Leonard Bernstein illustrates the spirit of Vatican II very well!
Did anyone else watch the choreography for the Street Chorus and find themselves reminded of Riverdance...?
I think that’s Michael Hume as the celebrant.
With great fear comes great performances. Did you think it had not been dome before. Thanks!
Why don't we have a modern fully staged version on DVD it's a disgrace
agree,
Agree, just saw UCF perform it in Central Florida... outstanding!
his estate won't license it
Maybe we need to make it a yearly competition, like the Olympics?
It's a disgrace that we don't have *this* version on DVD. Yes, it's dated and full of flaws, but there's no denying its energy and commitment.
Music starts at 4:10
Where can I get this on DVD?
A little less fear, and more joy. I know, I sound like a Hollywood producer. More trust.
This looks like Michael Hume the original celebrant from the original production.
Wasn't Alan Titus the original Celebrant?
On the recording, but on stage it was Michael Hume.
Titus was the original Celebrant on stage as well, but Hume was the understudy.
Thank you for the correction. Hume did the role in Los Angeles but not the original.

Why does Leonard look like a televangelist in this video clip?

Too human? Too feminine? You figure it out. Love you for giving me a choice!

Overacting. Remember, I'm a master liar. And you don't know how much delay was introduced by technology - spiritual or terrestrial
