  • This video addresses some major differences and key points between Bermudagrass and St. Augustinegrass. Key points discussed are drought tolerance, disease resistance, fertilizer requirements, and appearance.

Sorry guys, I forgot to address shade and sun tolerance!!! Bermuda LOVES full sun, St. Augustine is more shade tolerant. That also means that most folks with full sun St. Aug will have to water a lot more compared to full sun Bermuda. Thanks for watching!

I live 10 miles inland in Southern California. So I see a few summer days over 100. A few years ago, it got up to 112 and 117 one week. I have Bermuda for front lawn and my neighbor has St. Augustine. I keep it at about 1" tall. Although I fertilize and weed, mine rarely looks awesome. Most of the time, it looks blah. Conversely, my neighbor's St. Augustine looks stellar year-round. And it looks even better when he fertilizes. His hasn't been de-thatched in 20+ years, so he needs to do that because the thatching is really thick.
I view Bermuda as a invasive weed. I hate it. I'd love to get rid of it ... but you never really get rid of it. So the next house I get, I will grow St. Augustine (presuming there isn't already Bermuda there). I tried Marathon in the back yard, but our summers are just too hot for it. Also, the Bermuda that I thought I killed ended up re-growing and taking over the Marathon. Fuggin' Bermuda!!!

Lived in one house in the Houston area with a St Augustine yard for 12 years. It was a super thick carpet of something between a forest and emerald green. Other than mulch mowing it, we did jack all to it. No fertilizer. Hardly ever watered it. Except maybe when we did the slip-n-slide thing. Or that Fun Fountain clown thing. The only area we ever had die back was under a tire-swing. That yard seemed pretty indestructible with 6 kids plus neighborhood kids thrashing about. I'm at a loss for why you lawn guys seem to describe St Augustine as more or less delicate. Come to think of it. We also more of less didn't have any weed problems. But then again. You had to pry apart the 1/4 inch root shield under the grass blades to get to soil. That probably wasn't conducive to weeds. So maybe the yard flooding that seemed to happen every 3 to 4 years or so had something to do with it. Replenished a lot of nutrients in the soil or something? Honestly, no clue. But that yard defies most of what I hear about St. Augustine.

There’s also something to be said about the age of the lawn. Most younger lawns haven’t developed the resiliency and root system of an older lawn. I think that has a lot to do with it as well!

Is it safe to use Scotts weed and feed on Bermuda grass? I know if there's a heavy amount of things like crab grass etc. and weed grass, it will totally brown it, but does Bermuda grass resist a weed and feed treatment? Or does it just need to stay healthy with fertilizer to keep the weeds out?

I like the idea of having two types of dormant grasses side by side. Backyard looks great! I can see from the video your getting better results with Bermuda over St Augustine. Rule of thumb is not to water more than 1” per week. Watering 15-20 minutes 2-3x a week early in the morning. You can try a couple routes- 1) Mechanical Dethatching/power raking- it’ll tear up the st. aug, and the Bermuda will be recover much thicker. 2) Chemicals- stuff like quinclorac is tough on st. aug, but safer on Bermuda. You can also try waiting until the Bermuda goes into dormancy- and spraying areas with glyphosate.
