    Here's my .02 on a strangely controversial topic regarding engine break in. I typically do three 15 minute cycles spacing them apart with adequate amounts of time to completely cool the motor. During each heat cycle, I move the throttle to different ranges of RPMs and occasionally rev the engine.
    There are other methods and opinions on this topic... this is just the way I do it.

      I do a 3-4 heat cycles from 20 -15 minutes each then the first ride take it easy

    These are one of those dream builds that everyone wishes for once in a life time but hardly only a few get it done due to economy , job, family ,lack of time. But seeing someone else do it step by step with all the heart poured in makes one related to the build and feel proud of the accomplishment in the end. Well done mike !!!

    I think your break in procedure is right on. That's pretty much exactly the way I've always done it, and every motor I've done outlasted everything else. In fact, I've never blown a motor that I've built, and I've done dozens. So do what you do brother, especially if its working for you!

    I have been building 2 smokers for over 25 years I do 3 15 to 20 min heat cycles bump the throttle several times through out the run time and then 1 ride at about 45 mins and no full throttle then let them cool off then run them like striped apes !!!! And yes I do let the motor cool down in between each heat cycle !! Love the content brother !!!! You can diff build some SICK 2 SMOKERS

    I have heard a shop that builds crazy 100+ hp banshees will break them in doing max dyno runs right away after they are warmed up. They say those motors last and they make the most power

    When we break in aircraft engines we warm them up to operating temperature and then run them hard under load

    straight on dyno wide open in every gear for all the brand new bikes. The 2 strokes you dont want to over oil for break in or piston rings don’t seat properly.

    My dad has a 86 and a 87, on thre 87 I’ve broke in a 310 and a 330 kit on it and I always did 1-3 heat cycles then ran about 2 tanks though them just to be extra safe but that second tank all gears all different rpm ranges just making sure the motor is used every way like it would be in the future

    You are doing the break in the right way man. Only a fool will rip on a freshly built motor. Same goes for car engines. Even super car manufacturers have a break in procedure before anyone even gets the car

    I myself in crowded places start my quad and look at the exhaust smoke and coolant reserve tank. Makes me look PRO, but honestly I dunno a shit what i am looking for.

    Just rebuilt the top end on a 2001 Trailblazer 250 (I know you're jealous, lol). I used a NAMURA top end kit. The instructions say to do at least two heat cycles. They recommend driving it for 30 minutes to an hour, but taking it easy, not giving it full throttle, but if you do, very short spurts. Then let it completely cool down, (x2). I just do what the instructions say. That way if something goes wrong, I know it most likely wasn't me.

    The 350 raptor I rebuilt. I let it idle for about 10 min changing the rpms after that took it out to the trails and rode it for 20 minutes or so taking breaks of about 15 minutes. I did that for about 3 hrs then went home and changed the oil. I never ran it hard and made sure to go up and down in the gears. the next weekend I took it out and kind of did the same thing but rode it a little harder. After riding change the oil again. I have put about 15 hours on the motor and I have changed the oil three times. I’m going to change the oil to 20/50 because it’s hot as hell now. It seems to be running good so far.

    I was always very concerned that I would not give the engine enough break in time so I would mix up a tank of belray H1R at 32:1 and run the entire tank through at idle using the heat cycle method which took forever. However I took a brand new crank bearings and top end to Little Sahara once, idled around the pits a little and said screw it and went out and rode balls to the wall all night with no issues (no nikasil) just a ProX310 jug with a fresh Wiseco and .010 overbore

      In my opinion I think it's ok as long as there is a load on the engine and you're not panic reving with no load.

    Good stuff as always. I’ve always done pretty much how you said you do yours. My only difference would be that I ride fairly hard the first time. Not 100% balls out but I’d say a good 80% run for a full tank running a little on the fat side. I’m sure this thing will be just fine with what you said you’re gonna do 👍🏼 looking forward to seeing the graphics all done 👊🏼👊🏼

    I’m about done with a complete rebuild on a 1999 yz 125… my factory Manuel states a lot different then anything I find on the web… it states mix 15-1 and a few start ups… check plugs they will be rich, ride easy 2 times going up in rpm and right off… drain gas replace plug and it’s race ready.

    I have been rebuilding 2 bangers for a little over 30 years now.
    One thing I never have people talking about
    Is altitude it make a big difference in tuning the bike.
    I'm looking forward to messing around with Lectron carbies and would love to see you put one on your quad

    I'm a 5 heat cycle guy. I don't tell anyone they're wrong because it's my bike and I'm careful. Especially with 2-stroke forged aluminum pistons which I drilled oil holes with the cold seize factor. My IT 250 is running strong on a 27 hour topend. I also ran one tank 24 to one with those heat cycles then I changed back to 32:1.

    I usually do 2 heat cycles, then ride for one tank or 2 hours with varying load, no lugging no running it out, after that rip it. I usually leave the pre mix at 32:1 and leave the jetting alone

    Never done a 2-stroke, but on 4-strokes the first heat cycle is to bring it up to temp. Making sure fluids are topped up and moving, using the cheapest oil that meets specs, all parts well lubed with lucas engine break in. Also never letting it idle more than 10 seconds, and never over 50% throttle. Then a second the next day in the same manner. The third i will ride taking it easy, while never going past 75% throttle. Then i change the oil. The oil will now be factory to that model. Then run a full tank as if i would normally ride but at only 90%. Then another oil change and let it rip.

    I run cyclones on my banshee at the dunes. Don’t dig yourself into holes and you’ll do fine.
    I’d run richer than 40:1 at the dunes, they’re hard on things, especially 2 strokes 🤘🏼

    LTR Brake pistons will fit in the front only as the rear is to long compared to OEM. I know this because I tried. 😑

    Check the Silver Lake rules Mike, you need a spark arrester and 94db max before they will let on the dunes.

    3-6 heat cycles of 15/20 minutes of various rpm. Then easy on that first tank of gas constantly pulling the plugs. I never go past mid throttle so I get a good reading on how it cruises and the mid range. Once you have that the rest is gravy

    Those Sedonas will do just fine there... You'd be surprised how well knobbys do in the sand as well!

    I’ve broke mine in a few different ways and Ive never been able to tell a difference. All of them seemed to work fine. When I brought home a brand new Yfz450 in 2005, I decided I’d make up my own 7 day procedure of riding it easy for a week-1/4 throttle max 2days,1/2 throttle max 2days,3/4 throttle max for 2 days, and on day 7 I let it rip. It makes more sense in my mind riding it around easy for breaking it in instead of putting a fan on it and sitting in one place, doesn’t seem natural. I actually asked the dealership about performing heat cycles at home and they kinda laughed and said nobody ever does that. I wondered why is breaking in a rebuilt engine any different than one that’s fresh out the crate with zero ride time? I imagine 99.9% of people who bring home brand new machines from the dealership don’t perform heat cycles and just go ride. A rebuilt engine I’d think could be more laxed with already “broken in” and used other internals. Idk man.

      In the 1950 the tolerance were not as good as today so the break in was important to mate the part in the trans and all the gear in the engine and oil pump
      Today you only need to seat the ring and its done in the first 30min of running after that the cylinder crosshatch is gone

    I run 3-5x 20 minute heat cycles then I let it sit at idle with a blower fan at the motor for about 6+ hours. Then I change the oil and ride easy for the first tank. I change the oil again before riding hard.

    That’s funny about the shock from the tether. Except when it happened to me. Are follies are much more comical the more common the problem. In all fairness, the wires off the tether kill are NOT labeled, just 2 black wires as we know 💨💨😎💨💨

    Raced for many years in CA. My job was to ride em not fix em, but a couple 10 to 15 minute heat cycles is what every builder I knew did... they always stressed complete cool down between cycles. I would launch that 250R 100+ feet all day...

    First tank on my trx I use a conventional 2 stoke oil. Never wide open. Then I switch to maxima 927. Synthetic oil can cause glazing of cylinder on break in. Then 927 and 110octane.

    So many right ways to do it man. I do a tank of fuel mixed a bit heavy with some heat cycles and common sense. Minimal wot Check torque on cyl and head. After that it’s game on. Run the piss out of it.
    4 strokes I pretty much warm them up and run the shit out of them.

    Like you said I race desert so it’s 100miles races and I raced balls to the wall without Breaking it in and its running strong after another 120 mile race and some practice in between , 4stroke though yfz450r.

    I was always told with a two-cycle that you want to get them running and idling.. but the first time you like really got them out you want to get them high in the RPMs n under a load .actually get that motor warm like warm warm..

    I do pretty much the same thing, I do 3 heat cycles for 15 minutes each but on the first one I let it sit at idle then the second one I'll start reving it then on the third one i putt it around then after that I run it hard

      Yep gotta remove a arms swing arm and chain clean and lube after every trip or you will regret it. It's also hard on plastics

    My engine guy told me, start it and ride it hard. The exhaust gases will help seat the rings faster. But this was always in my twin sled engines, the new plasma coated cylinders in the new skidoo's are balls to the walls out of the box. But I am a firm believer in whatever works for you, go with it

    As a Precision machinist of 15 years. I Do a fair amount of heat treating as well as flame straightening and bending. I would not run a rebuild without heat cycles. In my opinion a engine that is cycled first will last longer potentially. Might as well give it every chance to thrive.

    I think engne break in is important. I just bought a new 2024 ktm 300 and i tried to baby it the first few rides. I probably should have done more heat cycles but i was too excited to not ride it. The only thing my manual says is to keep it under 70% throttle for the first 3 hours

    Best way to break in is under a little load. Also heat cycles, just drive easy and calm. Sometimes little more rpm's. It sounds scary, but sometimes even pretty high rpm's. Don't stay in low rpm for the hole time. After 1 or 2 gastanks you are good.

    If it’s a new machine I just follow the manufacturer’s instructions but a fresh rebuild I always run 3-4 easy tanks though it with it warmed up properly each time and I’ve had them last 200+ hours

    Dude I've said it many times, that R is bad ass, and it sounds sweet, it's your build break it in how you see fit, you have built enough engines and you know what your doing don't listen to the haters. I usually run a tank of fuel on a easy ride, then let it rip, (2 cycles). Anyway the R is bad ass bro I love it. 👍👍

    I do 3 -5 heat cycle( cold start to completely warmed up rev it only half throttle . After that I only go half throttle on the first tank of gas. Come second tank I kinda ride it like I stole it! Have fun ripping it.

      Plus where I live we got miles of Forestry Dirty Roads. Old logging trails. I go cruise those until I go through my tank of gas.

    I usually do a few 10 minute heat cycles on my builds then 1st ride i will stay off the rev limiter for an hour or so after that i don’t go crazy but ride it a little harder after that change the oil and ride the hell out of her! Ive had good luck over the years w my builds especially w racing these things but i usually do a new piston every 20hrs seeing has i run H/C pistons!
    New quad is running good getting 4 holeshots and 4 wins and even a couple record overalls for me 😁

    I usually ride it for heat cycles, staying under half throttle. Always heard the rings seat better having the engine under load. I honestly don't think it matters much as long everything is put together properly.

    Jake the garden snake has a great break in video. He shows how the factories do it when bikes come off the assembly line and they break in the engine at full throttle. I am just like you tho, it is scary doing hard break ins.

    I agree with your look on brake in I've just always went with a tank of gas and I always went little rich then mix gas haul ass ........... FYI it's a 2stroke people you don't hold it wide open forever or your going to blow it up again an again

      Two strokes actually like to be held up high in the rpms, so they don't get clogged up with oil. 👍

    i dont see how this is considered controversial when everybody does this . crank it up play around with it getting it hot letting it cool and repeating . i see nothing wrong with making sure your build it right . these people that say go out the box like you said get rebuilt after every race . ive seen and know people that do that on 2 stroke dirtbikes . me personally i dont have the money to rebuild my bike after every race and i think its a waist of money . thats people that are sponsored lol must be nice . and as far as best oil everybody knows klutz is the best lol
