    The best way I’ve found to remove the grill is to place the sub down on its rubber feet and put a screw driver or preferably something with a small hook or similar into either the top left or right corner and gently pry the grill outwards alternating between the left and right side. It should fall forward; much easier than trying to pry the grill up and out when the sub is facing up on its back.

      Yeah I was definitely riding the struggle bus there 🤣 Thanks for the tip and that reminds me I have little hook tools in my other toolbox! Hopefully I won't need to take the grill off anytime soon but if I do I'll be doing it your way.

    I had this problem with an EV ZLX12p. I did end up hurting the lock as I removed the connector. But I was still able to just plug cables into that input without the lock, and they worked fine. Plus, most of the time I was just using one input, and I used the other one. Eventually I sold those.

    Sorry to hear you had these issues! Have you had any further problems with the DXS18XLF? Do you think it was user error on the part of the renter or is there a fault in the subs? I was interested in them but not if they are prone to breaking!

    I decided to enter the PA business roughly a month before covid so I feel your pain. Last year was not a good one aside from some good paying outdoor gigs. Now business is slowly picking back up. Question on your rentals, say in this instance where someone destroyed your driver, do you pass along that cost to the person that rented it or did you set a standard deposit beforehand? I know I’m overly cautious but I always and Leary of renting out my top end gear cause I know how dang expensive it is to replace stuff.

      Realistically what should be done is in the rental agreement it should state the customer is responsible for damaged gear. When you do the rental you should take a photo copy of their credit card and photo ID. Keep that with the rental agreement and charge the card for any damage. In the event that the customer disputes the charges you may have to send the rental agreement to the credit card company to show they agreed to pay for any damages. For me damages are fairly rare so I'm a little lenient on the accidental damages. Although some customers I have banned from renting. I typically price my rentals at 5% of MAP but since subwoofers seem to be an issue I think I'm going to make them 7% or 8% of MAP. In the past I have upped rental prices on problem gear to as much as 10% to 15% of MAP. Not that that gear always came back broken but with projectors if HDMI cords are always missing I just build that into my rental price. I'd rather do that than charge a customer for the missing HDMI cord. I like the less hassle route and if the HDMI cord isn't missing it just means I made more money than I normally would have. lol For me it works out in the end but I'm in a small rental market (Fargo, ND).

    I do small sound jobs. I'm retired (72) but still active and in shape. I like working with local bands. I've been using 4 EV ELX20018SP subs because they are lightweight. On top I use a pair of DSR112 per side. The subs can't keep up with the tops. How hard would it be for me to load a pair of your subs in my van? The DXS18XLS kickass.
    Thanks..

      The Yamaha DXS18XLF's are the best subs I've owned to date but they are on the heavy side when it comes to 18" subs. I'm 39 and I'm downsizing to some high end 15" RCF subs. I should eventually do a comparison between them to see if I'm making the right choice. I'm trying to go smaller and lighter but still maintain good sound quality. So the 15's I bought are actually more expensive than my Yamaha's.

      @@TheAngrySoundTech What are you feelings on the 15" version DXS15XLF. I think they are about 20 lbs lighter and still have an output of 136 dB, they just don't go as deep. What about EV EKX18SP, 73 lbs 134 dB. They're not the DXS18XLF but they would me manageable for me and a step up from where I am now.

      Hi just came across this and wondered how you think the RCF 15 inch compares to the DXS18XLF? I currently have the DXS15XLF and am considering adding another one or upgrading to the DXS18XLF albeit at the expense of the extra size and weight. Wondering if it would be wiser to go the 15’s and save my back a little.

      Having to replace drivers because of a rental customer sucks. Everytime someone wants to rent just one sub I always think to myself... Do you really need just one sub or do you need 8 for how hard you're going to run the system? I feel like I should do a video on knowing the limitations of your sound system. It's a speech I used to give to every new DJ I hired.

      Was the lock broken or did the XLR just get stuck and not release? I'm wondering if it's because it's new and the locking mechanism needs to wear down a little. Just seems like a weird issue to me.

    the magnet in your blown driver is clearly split in half - 14:33 - that wasn't the renter's' fault - it cracked from internal stress. based on that and you never getting the replacement from Yamaha i would certainly not buy this sub myself. furthermore i would probably not be buying any speakers from Yamaha period. if they use cheap generic drivers that self-destruct and then they won't even replace it ... it becomes really hard to justify getting this over JBL SRX which have been around for a long time and have a proven track record.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 года назад

      Definitely not split in half. It was a shifted magnet and it's not an issue unique to Yamaha. I've had a shifted magnet on a QSC KW181, DAS Audio Vantec 18A and a DAS Audio Action 12A. It happens when an impact occurs and the glue fails to hold the magnet in place. The magnet slides to the side wall and pinches the voice coil in place. The result is a solidly locked in place driver.

    • @TheAngrySoundTech
      @TheAngrySoundTech  3 года назад +1

      The SRX series is a good alternative. I know quite a few people that use them. My only issue with the SRX series is their use of a 3" voice coil on 18" subs. Pretty much everyone else in the industry uses 4" voice coils.

      I have replaced and reconed many drivers over the years. It's a basic skill in the audio production world. As for the stuck XLR. Nothing was broken. If the XLR jack was faulty I would have removed the amp and sent it in for warranty repair.
