- Igor Stravinsky, Elegy for solo viola (1944)
Played flawlessly by Miles Hoffman.
(His channel is MilesHoffmanViola)
This short 5-minute work remains to be Stravinsky's only contribution to viola literature.
It has been said that world renowned violist William Primrose once proposed
commissioning a viola concerto from Stravinsky, but Stravinsky was not interested in the
project, so he went to Bartok instead who did agree to the offer. The Elegy was commissioned by Germain Prevost to honor the memory of Alphonse Onnou (1893-1940). Prevost, who was an extremely sentimental man, not only commissioned Stravinsky for this work, but also his friend Darius Milhaud, who wrote three works for viola and piano in memory of Onnou as well. Undoubtedly in the
war torn year of 1944, in which this work was composed, there were many victims
worthy of this somber token of remembrance.
Thank you for 45,000 views!
You know you're in for something substantial when you hear some solo viola music.
This is Bach, three hundred years older. I love it.
300 years more experienced, wiser and ripened
We Violist always get the sweet and mellow solos :) I'm a proud Violist!!
Love violas!
I am cellist, but if I'll play a second instrument (that's in my plans), I would choose with no doubt the Viola
I am doing a project on Igor Stravinsky for my music & art class and after looking up a couple songs of his, I really am hooked
Miles Hoffman has read the headline of this wonderful work. Thank you Miles - from a colleague, who loved to perform this piece several times.
Der reine wunderschöne Wahnsinn. Welch eine Musik.
I miss playing the viola beautiful instrument and hard to keep in tune but that's what makes it beautiful you have to work at it :)
This piece is so devastating. I love how it really challenges tonality without fully departing from it. It is truly tragic.
Thanks for this. It made me fall in love with this piece all over again. Beautifully done!
I've met Miles Hoffman before. He's really nice
I LOVE the viola...although the violin is a beautiful and sweet instrument, a viola touches me much more. it´s just can be rougher, wilder and more melancholic. Love it...
Alphonse Onnou was first violinist who founded the Pro Arte Quartet in Brussels in 1912. The group was famous for championing modern music, and Germain Prevost was the original viola player. The quartet moved to Wisconsin just before Onnou's death in 1940. One assumes that Stravinsky's regard for Onnou played a part in his accepting the commission, but really - did he ever write better for the violin? This is a stunning piece, surely one of his greatest non-orchestral works.
Still can't get over this piece.
This piece is breathtaking.
Esta pieza, que sin quererlo ni beberlo me hace llorar...
Beautifully played -and that is not an easy piece!
thats why i like the viola so much
thanks for upload
this is an amazing piece. someday i will be able to play it. i just have to make it through high school. i slightly preffer concertpiece for the viola but this is still a favorite.
Stravinsky, cada dia me rompes el corazon.
The mugshot photo is epic, so as the track.
amazing....
I'd say: truly magic
intense beauty
Actually, Dave, you're pretty low if you can't appreciate the solo music that Hindemith and Shostakovich, as well as Stravinsky, wrote for viola, or Shostakovich's cello concerto played on viola, as it often is.
+socraticgadfly I play viola & in my eyes, this has always been 1 of the nicest compositions. I'm not bothered by Dave's arrogance. He brings no tears to my eyes :)
1 dislike? Must be a jealous violinist...
Nice
thanks for posting and pls excuse all the idiots, Miles....I love this piece and performed it many times.....
Hey this might be a little late and you may have found it already, but I found the sheet music here for free. Its a website called Scorser. Here's the link, just scroll down the one that says Igor Stravinsky elegie for solo viola. Make sure you click on the green words that say "download free PDF", because if you click on the blue link, it will redirect you to some weird russian game haha have fun!
*_I'M ROLLING MY NAKED EYES AT THESE COMMENTS! THIS SHOULDN'T BE A WAR OF WORDS BETWEEN THE VIOLIN & VIOLA, IT SHOULD BE AN APPRECIATION OF THIS LOVELY MUSIC. BUT FOR THE RECORD, I'M A VIOLIST & I PREFER THE VIOLA, BUT I LIKE THE VIOLIN TOO_*
Wonderful, A piece I didn't know of. The score is available at Schott Music.
I'm playing this piece for solo and ensemble :D
My God.
there is a website called Scorser. Click on the PDF link. It should download right away!
@utopianvirtuoso Thats awesome!
This piece reminds me of WWII
Over Igor Stravinsky, in 2013, I am at odds with my wife over the nature and purpose of music. To her this is anxiety to me, a contemplation. Thoughtful.
@TheJunglist1210 i was just kidding; I somewhat agree. I mean, everyone still has their own taste, and this might not appeal to some. eh, who knows. to each their own, i suppose.
Really? Didn't know C was a 4th below G. Pretty sure it's a 5th. It's okay though, not like the circle of 5ths is like common musical knowledge or anything. I honestly don't understand why so many violinists hate the Viola, I play both and I love them both. They both have their charms. It's not like the violin could do what the viola does in orchestras, or vice versa. We need them both.
@blookloo1129 You can find music for this piece at Shar's online website. For about $10 you will get both the viola part and a violin transcription.
😍😍😍
I'm grateful for this. It's a very fine performance. But who's the performer?
David Schoenbaum
Зрелый Стравинский решил находится вне "своего" времени, но там, где ему нравится. И это ему удалось.
@killercheese101 yep you do, but its not nearly the same XD i played the viola for a while and though the deep voice it owns is..... well sexy to put it bluntly, the violin still gives me goosebumps lol. Still much love to violist everywhere :p
this is amazing
if you like this you might like
gabriel williams - dancing with the schizophrenic
And I also play both violin and viola so you have no way to try to put me down for being "larger".
Let's see here... For those with an ear and basic knowledge of music theory, those 'out of tune' notes are in tune, they're simply not in the key signature. Second, the song was written with a rather large amount of dissonant intervals. Last but not least, I know all of this better than you do... and I'm a violist.
I have been looking for the sheet music for this piece for almost a year!!! Has anyone found it yet? And where?!
right now there's 8 violinists...
The pic at 2:40 expresses exactly how I feel! Somethin like: I don't give a fuck or 'attaccatastacippa'... =D
einsam und weinen
anyone know where to get this sheet music?
Cannot stand the shrill violin, but i've always liked the viola.
LOL i love your coment!
Who plays this recording?
Hah, I love it. Whenever a composer wants to write a depressing piece what key do they immediately resort to? C minor, the bloodiest and deepest red of all keys. There is no way around it, there are so many elegies written in c minor, even ones not written for the viola!
@DanielOsorioCuesta can I have a copy?
They are spreading...
wasnt Stravinsky a violist?
AND THE IMAGE OF THE PLAYER, WHERE IS? PHOTOS OF THE COMPOSER SAY NOTHING, EVEN THAT, FROM THE BOSTON POLICE.
I didn't even know who Heifetz was and I never wanted to play the violin.
a
i have the viola part....
so... is in ares too
who wants write me!!!
Lowliest? Naw. That's the ukulele.
Jahnell Williams en.scorser.com/I/Sheet+music/229505.html
To describe the viola as the "lowliest of string instruments" truly shows your lack of knowledge of the instrument and of string instruments in general. The viola is a wonderful instrument, capable of playing pieces designed for both cello and violin. To say that it must "hurt deeply" to be "larger" makes no sense, clearly you were bullied throughout your childhood, most likely for playing the violin (a travesty that that still happens though it is) and you use this to get back at bullies.
Counterpoint? This is not counterpoint.
The 20 who disliked are snot-nosed violinists🤦🏽♀️🤣 jk
HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAH of course!
0:57 wft!!!!!! rachmaninoff in the jail?!!!!!!!!!!
Composers are degenerate scoundrels. Bach did time.
hhaahhahhahhahahahahahahahhaha..............thats true!!..hhahaaahhahhaha.....it must be a very jealous violinist....hhahahhhahahha...... nice commentary :) LARGA VIDA A LA VIOLA!!!!
Dave Smith, you are such a sad person.
Is Dave Smith like the viola hitler or something? Or is he just joking? No violist hates violins that much I'm sure.
I just tune my violin down a fourth if I want a C string. Then, to sound like a violist, I play all my 3rd and 4th finger notes out of tune. 2:50 - 3:45 for those with an ear, enjoy the "flawless" violist. I do pity you violists, it must hurt deeply to have been a "larger" child (such as the "stocky" and "big-boned" friends of my youth) and been forced on to the viola when all you really wanted was to be like Heifitz, not relegated to the lowliest of all string instruments.
Poor viola. An elegy and a couple of other creepy pieces no one listens to. Maybe composers avoid(ed) it because they can't play in tune (e.g. 3:08 - and other parts.) Still, an interesting listen.
sorry,, i say stravisnky... epic fail..
