Could've been explained a little more clearly in the beginning. Yes, you follow the bearing, but in order to do so you need to make sure the "N" on the dial is aligned with the magnetic needle or "red in the shed" as you're walking.

If you're completely lost surely you'd have to find your position on a map first? Wouldn't triangulation be the very first thing worth learning?

Great instructions, I just took the 135 degrees bearing in my bedroom:) I didn't know first turn the dial so the black arrow on the end of the UST Compass points to 135 degrees, and second, rotate my body while holding the compass straight out in front of me until the red arrow is lined up with the "N" for North. Third, once lined up North take a look at the black arrow again, and that's 135 degree bearing:) NICE!

Hi, I have a question, maybe look stupid but I broke my compass because of freezing, pretty cold in winter, so my question is how do you know if it's good for winter or not, maybe I buy a cheap one, but I really donty want to happen again, I always have 2 or 3 now just in case but I just want to make sure it wont freeze, I was thinking try to put it in the freezer for a day or 2 to see, but you may have a better solution, thank you.

We haven't had any complains about our compasses freezing during the winter. Check the freezing point of the liquid inside the compass, ours is made out of mineral oil. I hope this helps!

UST Brands Thank you, I put my 2 others in the freezer and after outside (- 24 c. ) and one crack, after 2 hours liquid was leaking, it was not any oil but some water with a weird smell, so I won't buy any compass from internet, better pay more and be sure than buying cheap and not working when needed, so thanks again for your reply.

Danny Garden: You could get a "dry" compass such as the Cammenga 3H.....they don't have any liquid in them so you will never get bubbles or leaks (which are usually caused by changes in temperature and / or atmospheric pressure).

Is a good video and it talks about adjusting for declination. But basically with a compass in your hand turn your dial so N lines up on the red arrow this is magnetic north. You can turn your body if you want with the compass in that direction after and you are now pointing magnetic north in front of you. Adjust for declination by now turning the North (which was aligned with the red arrow) to the right or left how many degrees you are told to by the map legend. You can now follow the directions from these two videos. These compasses that allow you to adjust for declination allow you to turn the North away from the 'shed' The shed is where you want your red arrow to be since it indicates true magnetic north, while after setting declination the N on the dial indicates the N on the map. NOTE some compasses that are cheaper do not allow you to adjust for declination and it looks like this compass he is using doesnt.
