Some of the jackets look really warm. My kit tends to be cheap but functional. Although I have some Altura stuff (Base layer, jacket, tights) I mainly have the Aldi brand. It is good stuff for the money. In the winder I use the Aldi jacket, but mix and match the rest. In addition to the Altura base, the rest of the bases are Aldi. Shirts are a mix of Aldi and club stuff (CATS MBC). I have a Karimour fleece neck warmer. Tights are either Aldi or Atura. The Aldi skull cap and gloves are also good. A recent addition to the kit is a Sealskin overboot. Because they are for look cleats, having them wear out is not such an issue, as the overboot does not really come into contact with the road. However, for winter MTB stuff on the two pin system I have a set of Specialized winter defrosters. Good boot. But the sealskins are good and warm. Even have flashy lights on the heal. Overall, as long as you have layers you are going to be warm and these combos have worked for winter riding and commutes. Anyway, good video and I will have a look on the Evans site for their stuff. That’s a great review Katie and it’s good to know what brands you recommend. Well done for such a clear recommendation. You have some lovely colours and designs.
Tried Pactimo? I've got their 12hr RT bib shorts for audaxing. They're fleecy lined but not too much so I wear them all year round, the pad is built for long days in the saddle, and they've got reflective thigh grippers. Very impressed with them.
I ride in temps cold here in Minnesota, sometimes below zero Fahrenheit with wind chill 15-30 below, I know you and some won’t wear wool, but for me I love the stuff, only thing that works under extreme sweating in this cold we get, wool holds it warmth when it’s wet better then anything I have tryed, I wear coldpruf base layer plantinum series II 70% poly 30% merino wool, pants I wear adidas tech fleece climawarm, for top half I use poly adidas sleeveless shirt, then a Hanes 50/50 sweatshirt 50 poly 50 cotton, then a Columbia full zip fleece with neck coverage, then I wear a himulaya hardwear down lightweight jacket top layer packable under 1 pound, for boots I don’t like clip in on my winter bikes, I use Irish setter vaprtrek 400grams insulated waterproof on welgro pedals and I still beat the guys with there fancy Shimano boots an all haha, Nice video Katie, your looking fabulous

I also have a Rapha classic winter jacket. Only a couple of drives, but it looks really good. A couple of technical shirt underneath, and I have done as -7 Celsius. Exciting to see how it works -10 - -20 degrees. When it gets colder, I switch inside.
How is the sizing/fit on the Proviz Switch gilet? For comparison, I purchased a Rapha waterproof gilet (in my normal size) off ebay and it was way to small. Thank you. Keep up the good work.
Interesting stuff katie, i agree winter boots are a good investment, i got a pair of Gaerne ones last year, they're great. Dry feet on a wet day is unusual. On the shorts thing, i've found Sportful shorts really comfortable for me, ( i've no idea what they're womens line is like)

I wear a pair of Endura windchill bib tights without the pad over either bib shorts or a pair of 3/4 bibs if it’s even colder. I also swear by Sealskinz socks and then overshoes.
I've recently started using Spatz overshoes...they are amazing, warm and totally water proof especially when used over winter shoes on really cold/wet days.
Great video and great reviews do you wear any socks ? Just joking :-) You didn't mention anything about socks. I know that you are vegan but lots of people it's not so if someone is looking for very good winter socks check out the New Champ Socks they are new small brand based in UK. They have only few designs at the moment but very good price/quality. I wouldn't pay £20 for Pongo or something similar just because they are made in "Italy". Going back to clothing in winter time I can recommend the thermal jacket from altura cost me only £38 but it's great in temp between -5 to +10 I can wear it just with the baselayer when is windy I just use the gilet from Pearson cycling it's not cheap but it's worth the money 👍
I have recently experimented waterproofing a jacket and bib tights with a mixture of silicone and white spirit. The jacket looks like it's been used as a tissue 🤣 but the tights look fine. Just waiting for the smell to go and I will test them out. If it doesn't work then I'm going to get something decent that is already waterproof. Any suggestions on what i should get?
I wear endura pro SL jersey with a merino wool base layer, this is fine for me down to zero. I also recommend bibs with no pad over your summer bibs, gives an extra layer round your torso. Aldi waterproof socks are a bargin if you ride in the rain with overshoes.
Thanks Max. Got to be honest had this last weekend off but I will be back on it this weekend :) Zwift in the week and out on the weekend. Hope you’re having a good week :)
Little late to this party, but anyways.... I have a question. Do you wear cycling jacket on top of long sleeve winter jersey or without. Reason I am asking is I recently ordered Rapha winter jacket, and by all measurements it should fit me well. The problem is...I can maybe squeeze base layer under it, definitely not base layer plus winter jersey. Shoould I size up at least one if not two numbers? I am afraid then the sleeves will be too long. Maybe I have weird body type. Thanks
Depends, generally in winter I wear a thick base layer (Like a fleece one ) and then just the winter jacket. Too many thick layers I don't personally like as it feels so bulky.
Dang you have lots of stuff to wear. Looks like most is pretty new or at least well cared for. I'm not too keen on booties over the shoes so cold feet tend to limit my rides at some point. May have to consider boots but usually when it gets that cold where I live, snow and ice on the roads keep me inside. Wind proofness is something lacking in too many thermal cycling tops based on my experience.
Why don’t you try some Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires, I used them all last winter on snow and ice and never had one slip. They are a bit noisy as they are studded tires, but they got me up and down steep hills on sheet ice safely.
I live near Toronto, Canada. Can you descibe what Rapha is ? I see they have locations in the USA , looks like a Starbucks that sells bike clothing and organizes bike rides ?
More of a high end bike clothing store that also sells coffee and organises rides. Most Rapha shops have a club associated with them, so the customers can ride with the club.
Hi Katie - it's many years since I cycled in the winter but am considering it... I was a bit confused on how many layers in total you wore on the day when it was below 5 C (i think I counted 3 - base adidas, jersey, jacket). The other thing I've struggled with is padding in winter gloves isn't as good as summer mitts - after having carpal tunnel surgery I need a lot of padding. Many thanks for your help.
Heeey, yeah so on the -5 day (which I didn’t realise it was that cold until we were out) I wore base layer, the Le Col too and then the insulated gilet. I was pretty warm apart from my hands but I did cut the fingers off my gloves so I could use a camera haha. My own fault really. If you look at my Festive 500 vids it was the first day called ‘audax’ it something similar. Hope that helps. X
Katie, I have to give it to you....A few years back, you had a little extra weight, now look at you, you have a perfect figure. All of that clothes fit you incredibly well.
For Winter Gear Cycling I'm Going to Have to Travel to the Great White North (AKA Britain) Nothing Near the Selection Available Here in Southern Cal. But then again I'd be Mad to go out for a Spin in anything less than 15C and Just Wouldn't Even Ever Consider Going Out in the Rain!
@@KatieKookaburra , you were in my neck of the woods in your California Virgin Ride when you reached Malibu. So you know the beastly weather we Angelenos have to tolerate. Even in the Rapha Store in Santa Monica nothing available close to being Winter appropriate, So it's a tough call to spend any serious cash for something you might only wear once a year,
For great winter gear and especially jackets and bib fights look at Galibier Velo Mistral, great value and superb gear - galibier.cc/product/mistral2bibs/
Hi Katie I’ve just discovered your channel , which I am enjoying very much I’ve just watched the one on cold weather gear I don’t understand where you’re coming from with the dislike of merino wool because of your veganism It’s sheep’s wool sheep need to be sheared for their own comfort if nothing else no cruelty involved Maybe I’m missing something Anyway no problem with how you feel about it My daughter is vegan by the way All the best Alan
My best cycling accessory - arm warmers - I have a penchant for Polaris ones (I've got three pairs). They can feel like you're wearing a whole other layer, and can be whipped off whilst riding. www.polaris-bikewear.co.uk/Polaris-Thermal-Cycling-Arm-Warmers-p/pol01-1014-p.htm give them a whirl.
You're being misguided in your viewpoint that you can't wear wool because you're vegan. Shearing sheep of their fleece is a kindness and a necessity; if the heavy locks aren't removed, they become matted with dirt and plant material and weigh the sheep down, causing stress and strain on their legs and impeding their ability to walk, graze, and care for their young. And if you buy from ethical brands, the wool is taken from flocks that are lovingly cared for and raised as members of the shepherd's family. Also, all of those synthetic materials are created from fossil fuels and do far more damage to the environment and the ecosystem that supports animal life. Educate yourself about wool, please. It's naturally anti-microbial, anti-flammable, warm and insulating even when wet, and is recyclable/compostable. When you're finished with your synthetic jersey, it goes in a landfill and stays there for millennia.
Merino wool is also one of the most epic products of late. I have a vest and have worn it for seven years riding in all weathers. Keeps you warm in winter cool in summer doesn’t smell dries quickly doesn’t hold moisture like cotton. Soooo good. And as you said sheep shearing is natural. They get the odd nick when it’s done (I’ve had a go at it myself it’s a skill) but it doesn’t hand them whatsoever.
Heeeey Josie, hope you had a good festive season. Yup I talked about it in My Next Big Challenge vid which is All Points North. But have a few more things planned which I will do a video about soon. What about you? Anything specific planned for 2019? X
Katie Kookaburra oh yeah I remember the video now, that sounds awesome! :) I’ve entered the ballot for Ride London so will find out if I get in soon, 100 km is the furthest I’ve ridden so if I get in I’ll have some training to do! X
Apparently vegans won't use wool because of the way that the sheep are treated. She's using all kinds of synthetics that are made from oil. Perhaps vegans should work to get marino wool from ethical sources instead of relying on synthetics which is bad for the whole planet.
Absolutely agree Owen that materials and clothing are so bad for the environment, I think I read clothing is the second biggest waste that is dumped in landfill. But, that is why I am INCREDIBLY choosy over items I buy and wear. I want them to last until they are literally falling apart. But, it's more important to deal with the way animals are treated first and foremost which would then have the positive ripple effect on the planet and the environment. It's not about being perfect, it's about doing the best you possibly can. For me, that means using, wearing and eating items that haven't come from animals.
@@KatieKookaburra Not taking sides here but sheep have to have their wool taken from them or they would get to hot in summer or hot weather so it would be a waste to not use it.
prices change over time and between countries.... prices in a video will date it and give the wrong info even after a couple of months... you can click her links or google for prices...
Not picking on you. But Merino sheep don't shed their wool like some other sheep, I wont mention them because you are Vegan. If you don't shear the Merino and most other sheep they will over heat, from having too much wool and also when they falls over from too much weigh from the wool, the poor thing cant get up and end up having a cruel death. So its OK to have Merino base lays! But we all have our choice in life.

Thank you Katie that helps a lot. Roll on the warmer weather.
Katie, do you have any videos for female saddles and how to avoid female numbness? X
I am in the process of making one just about that :) Should be up next week xx

What happened to your Liv top?
Normal cycling shoes + PRO overshoes. Job done.
Katie, I have to give it to you....A few years back, you had a little extra weight, now look at you, you have a perfect figure. All of that clothes fit you incredibly well.
Ahhh thank you, Rob!! :)
Nice image to depict the video. Looks like a genuine magazine advertisement. Did you shoot it yourself?
Thanks so much, yep I did it myself :)
Brilliant video, thanks x
HNY KK how do you keep the stuff so clean ? Just normal non bio powder ?
Yes I use a cruelty free one from Aldi, or Ecover I find pretty gentle too. But this is a one-off it's all clean at the same time haha.
Thanks. Very useful video. You mention layering up. Is your baselayer worn under everything? It didn't look like it on the video.
I do wear the base layer under the jerseys and jackets.
You have a spare room? haha
@@KatieKookaburra , you were in my neck of the woods in your California Virgin Ride when you reached Malibu. So you know the beastly weather we Angelenos have to tolerate. Even in the Rapha Store in Santa Monica nothing available close to being Winter appropriate, So it's a tough call to spend any serious cash for something you might only wear once a year,
Are Cycling shorts worn directly?
yep
I love your videos
MTB cleats?
Looking good my friend
Why thank you Paul :)
For great winter gear and especially jackets and bib fights look at Galibier Velo Mistral, great value and superb gear - galibier.cc/product/mistral2bibs/
What about pants?
I'm a terrible person....I watched this video JUST to see KK in Lycra...
idiot
@@fraancetate8759 Happy New Year. I'm sending you lots of virtual love and hugs xx
@@anthonyshillingford848 She looks pretty indeed and there is nothing too terrible in that.
La Passione or Adidas are my goto brands
Hi Katie
I’ve just discovered your channel ,
which I am enjoying very much
I’ve just watched the one on cold weather gear
I don’t understand where you’re coming from with the dislike of merino wool because of your veganism
It’s sheep’s wool sheep need to be sheared for their own comfort if nothing else no cruelty involved
Maybe I’m missing something
Anyway no problem with how you feel about it
My daughter is vegan by the way
All the best
Alan
She couldn't find a sheep to sponsor the video
Merino wool is also one of the most epic products of late. I have a vest and have worn it for seven years riding in all weathers. Keeps you warm in winter cool in summer doesn’t smell dries quickly doesn’t hold moisture like cotton. Soooo good. And as you said sheep shearing is natural. They get the odd nick when it’s done (I’ve had a go at it myself it’s a skill) but it doesn’t hand them whatsoever.
What is winter? -20C or little bit gold like -5C? -30C is still okey if you are just wearing right things!
What is your next cycling goal/event if you have one? X
I’ve entered the ballot for Ride London so will find out if I get in soon, 100 km is the furthest I’ve ridden so if I get in I’ll have some training to do! X
Hi. Why can’t you wear Marino wool.
Sheep will tangle themselves in bushes and barbed wire in order to tear the fleece from their bodies.
What’s the problem with wearing Marino wool if you’re vegan ? The animal isn’t being killed for its wool.
Santini C3 chamois FTW.
And bibs?
Watch until the end :)
Thanks - and here's my go-to garment: ruclips.net/video/HDRbgjLm8qM/видео.html
Seal skinz do really good gloves … or maybe they aint and endura do good bib shorts.
But size up, I wear a 9 (large), need an XL in Seal Skinz for finger length.
A large in the Endura gloves fit great.
And for the legs????...
Why are cycling clothes black?
I wish I could afford such redundancy in my cycling wardrobe.
Some prices would have been helpful.
prices change over time and between countries.... prices in a video will date it and give the wrong info even after a couple of months... you can click her links or google for prices...

Nice
Not picking on you. But Merino sheep don't shed their wool like some other sheep, I wont mention them because you are Vegan. If you don't shear the Merino and most other sheep they will over heat, from having too much wool and also when they falls over from too much weigh from the wool,
the poor thing cant get up and end up having a cruel death. So its OK to have Merino base lays! But we all have our choice in life.
