When you were talking about the 'Johns' in the Scapegoat it made me think of the Christmas Gavin and Stacey! "Step brother John" 😂

Hi Lauren. The Fair Fight is phenomenal, you're in for a real treat! I too find that there's something about Daphne du Maurier's books that makes you keep thinking about them. It's the reason why I decided to read all her books.

Thank you for a year of Booktube. I love hearing you and getting new ideas from your content. My favourite book of 2019 was the The Last Runaway by Tracey Chevalier. I learnt a lot from it about the Quakers, the Free States and the Underground Rail Road. It is so shocking, I still think about it now. Only 30000 slaves escaped out of more than 3 millions via the Underground Rail Road. I also liked Washington Black which is a different take on the same topic. Keep your videos coming in 2020 and have a smashing new year.

I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver as well. We get several of his programs on TV in Canada and his recipes are so accessible. Great to see a cookbook amongst your favourite reads! I am a collector of random recipes and many, many books!!! Have a great reading year , Lauren!!😀📚🇨🇦

I'm reading Queenie at the moment and really enjoying it. I can see why it would be compared to Bridget Jones' Diary but I think it's fresh and more modern. Loving the writing. It's very sharp and witty.

I bought the whole collection on Daphne Du Maurier last year and didn't know where to start as I have only read Rebbeca in the past. Scapegoat sounds great.

Queenie was SO GOOD. That and The Heart's Invisible Furies were my two favorites of 2019, I'm already rereading Hearts, and I've just loaned out Queenie

An American Marriage almost, almost made my books of the year. The Five is incredible, my non fiction of the year. So pleased you love The Christmas Chronicles so much. I must read more Daphers this year. I haven’t for ages. Shame on me. Five Days of Fog I had completely forgotten about, you’ve reminded me how much I wanted to read it, especially with your (as always) enthusiasm. Hurray for Lowborn. I don’t think I shouted about Queenie enough last year as I read the proof in 2018. No proofs before the year the book comes out ever again. I want to read more John Boyne in 2020 too. Fab choices.

Happy New Year Lauren. Love watching people’s best books of the year videos and yours is no exception! Just a quick note to ask if you have read du Maurier’s ‘The Breaking Point’. It’s a collection of eight (?) short stories. I REALLY struggle with story stories, but there were a few in here that were great, specifically The Blue Lenses (so good!), Rondoland (propaganda/fake news anyone?) and Alibi (these names may not be exactly right but hopefully close enough! 😅). I found a couple of stories fairly ‘meh’, but even if it were only the three mentioned, that’s a really high hit rate for me with short story collections. The writing is what one might euphemistically call “of its time” in places, but if you can deal with that then I’d definitely give The Breaking Point a whirl if you haven’t previously done so. Happy reading for 2020. 🤓📖📚

Yay for this video, Lauren!! I'm glad to see An American Marriage here - I also loved that book. Daphne Du Maurier is incredible, isn't she? I need to read more by her. Ahhh, Lowborn. That book sounds incredible, and I've heard lots of great things. Going on my tbr. I'm also borrowing Queenie off my friend soon! I'm super excited for it. 😊

I'll never be able to thank you enough for the Patreon pick of The Scapegoat. BLOODY LOVED IT!! I will not shut up about it ;) and it is my Number 1 read of 2019. My other Top Reads of 2019 are Circe, The Skylarks War and Mythos (on audio, read by Stephen Fry). Best graphic novel read of the year has to go to Heartstopper Vols 1 and 2 :)

One of my favorite books of all time is Frenchman's Creek cause of you!!! A classic pirate's tale with so much suspense and convincing romance...and ooohhh...the way Daphne writes...😍😍😍
Loved all Du Maurier's book except Jamaica Inn (a little too dark and disturbing for my taste. And the audio book reader made the women sound ridiculous 😆).
I will add The Scapegoat to my reads for 2020!
Please please please read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Such a beautifully told story with such amazing character development!!! Would love to hear your thoughts.

Great list of books 📚🤗 The Hearts Invisible Furies was my favourite book of 2018. I really enjoyed An American Marriage last year. I think The Five and Daisy Jones and the Six were my favourite audiobooks in 2019. I have Queenie and think I will start reading this week. I will download Lowborn on Audible with my next credit and get to that for my commute to work when I return next week! Have you read Skint Estate? I have heard it’s brilliant audiobook.

I've seen you and Simon talk about Five Days of Fog for a bit now, but it hasn't been available in the US. I had my Hubby order 6 books from the UK for me including Five Days of Fog. I have some library loans to read before I can start it --but I am so looking forward to it.

I'd still love to see a plastic reduction video- it's one of my pastimes, I've taken up soft plastic recycling as a hobby. I've bought Jamie's Veg but haven't cooked anything out of it yet. It's too hot in Australia for cooking right now, if it ever calms down I'll have to check it out.

Oh my. I've just read Veg. You're quite right! From My Cauliflower Tikka Masala I was in. And oh Rogan Josh Scotch Eggs! Hello. There are a couple of summer recipes I can look at - My Panzanella Gazpacho looks good and I'm just starting to harvest what looks like a bumper crop of tomatoes. And that big filled cobb loaf will be delicious for a big event I have coming up in a few weeks.

My 10 favorite books of 2019 are the frenchman’s Creek, Rebecca, my cousin Rachel, the parasites and the scapegoat by daphne du maurier. The silence of the girls by pat Barker, purple hibiscus by chimamanda ngozi adichie, affinity by Sarah waters, the song of achilles by Madeline miller and the English animals by Laura Kaye. I know half of this list is daphne du maurier books but I discovered her thanks to your book club and she’s so amazing that I had to bingeread as many books as I could.
