So I came down from New Bern a few months back just to look at the boats. What a beautiful place, if you love boats like I do, its a whole new world. I live on my boat up here in New Bern and Im one of the lucky ones for sure. Hey thanks for sharing.

Can anyone tell me why Jarett Bay planks the side of their hulls first then the bottom? So many others plank the bottom fist but that doesn’t mean it’s right. It’s an itch I’ve gotta answer.

In the old days of plank on frame construction, it was generally considered structurally better to have the side planking resting on the bottom planking. So the side planking would get put on first. Now days, with the usage of epoxy adhesives, cold molded planking, and the chine log structure, the strength is essentially identical either way.
We have done them both ways. If memory serves me, we did Builder’s Choice bottom planking first.
I’d like to give a mystical answer for the reasons we do it one way or another, but the truth is, it’s all about scheduling.
We generally start planking the sides first so we can build the tunnel mold and lay up the parts before we get to that stage of the bottom planking.
      Good question. Thank you.
