Gene's voice and Roger Mcguinns 12-string Rickenbacker: the best combi, I ever heard. So glad, there is RUclips, so I can hear them over and over again. Gene, R.I.P., Roger play on!
Everytime I discover something new on RUclips new or about Gene Clark it reminds me of what attracted me to it to begin with. I know what attracted my attention to the Byrds and my focus on Gene. Great songwriting and vocals. It's irresistable.
That's a cool stripped down version of the song. I think the studio recording has horns and strings and all that. It's cool to hear the 12-string filling in the gaps.
I think in the Byrds Chris mostly sang the low harmony, he was more or less expected to step it up and take Gene's position after he left the group, and Gene was a natural baritone. Crosby sang the high harmony, or Mcguinn depending on the song, usually Crosby though.
Not sure why you're listening if you don't like Gene Clark. Most of us here think he was an extremely talented songwriter who was sadly overlooked while he was alive. Of course - if you are into the Monkees and that type of stuff - you may not get it.
True, Roger looks a bit frightened. Probably because he knows Gene's written yet another superior song, thus leading to even more guilt over his plan to exclude many great Clark compositions from the Byrds box set.
What? Roger is never afraid. He invented that jingle sound and he is the master of the 12 strings rickenbacker that gene can not play. His eyes are just that Looking at audience. I dont see FEAR but i hear hillman's string bass
I wish they would have stayed together longer. Saw them twice in Hawaii. Once in 1978 and also in 1979. Both at univ of Hawaii. America opened for them in 1978.
Wish the sound was better! But I do like this song! I miss not having this album to listen to anymore! If you have anymore songs to post by Clark, Hillman, McGuinn, do!
Not quite, Rob. The song was written by Gene Clark and is being performed by McGuinn Clark & Hillman. The group known as "The Byrds" was put to bed back in 1973 after the reunion album done by the original 5 members.
I am torn on this. I like when they were doing it on tour in Australia, but I prefer it without Roger singing along with Gene. It was also better when it was faster. There is a suberb live broadcast recording from Australia 1978 (this tour) with a nice version on it. But at least the disco element isn't on here that was on the album. There is a decent live version from LA 1979 that was professional recorded for King Biscuit. I may like that one best.
Yeah, Gene and Roger aren't really together here, in voice or in spirit. Roger was probably pissed off about Gene drinking and drugging his way through the tour.
I couldnt agree more. I like it w Gene on lead vocals alone. Roger I reckon wanted some of the spot light on him too. Lyrics are kinda hokey to begin w but w Gene alone on vocals it makes that easy to overlook. Theres another video w just Gene singing
@TheMichaelJB At the time of YTY, I'd say you're quite right there. Crosby's output seemed to vary to extremes, really... the stuff he wrote that didn't get on that and the next album, though ... pretty good. Eventually, he found his way into something more to his speed, and that went well. Clark, though ... pure genius!
With 3 original members, there shld be more called THE BYRDS than MC Guinn Hillman And Clark, as there has been Byrds versions with only Mc Guinn or Clark as original member....
@psychobollox I would rate the order of Byrds songwriters as Clark, McGuinn, Hillman and then Crosby. I wouldn't want to fail to give Crosby some credit though, as he was a great harmony singer with the Byrds and Renaissance Fair was one of my favorite songs on Yonger Than Yesterday. On the other hand, the Crosby penned Mind Gardens was the worst song. Chris Hillman had clearly passed Crosby as a songwriter by the time of YTY.
I don't know why you posted this as Gene Clark and not McGuinn, Hillman and Clark. You might think he was one of the best song writers but he is not anything special.
Are you familiar with his body of work? Perhaps this particular song doesn't turn you on; but to announce to those of us that love the man and his work is mean spirited. Consider your audience; you are insulting. By the way, this is a really, really good song.
I think he was incredibly special. I have listened to him for many years and have a couple of his LPs : Road Master and White Light. He wrote some lovely melodies and some brilliant songs in my opinion. I'm a fan of course. I think it is great that there is so much of his work around, as he died so young.
I did not say that I disliked him I just don't know why some people put him on a pedestal. He did not have anything special about him. The Byrds are one of my favorite bands.
So you're a Byrds fan? Did you like Here Without You, Feel A Whole Lot Better, The World Turns All Around Her, Set You Free This Time, She Don't Care About Time, Eight Miles High... etc? Gene wrote or was the principal songwriter of all these classics which were responsible for the Byrds being more than merely a cute Bob Dylan covers band in the early days. And that's without going into his chronically underrated solo works which I doubt you've even listened to.
Gene had some solo albums too that are outstanding. Youre either not that familiar w him or you are roger mcguin and jealous bc so many people love gene and think roger is meh
Gene's voice and Roger Mcguinns 12-string Rickenbacker: the best combi, I ever heard. So glad, there is RUclips, so I can hear them over and over again. Gene, R.I.P., Roger play on!
Incredible video of the McGuinn, Clark and Hillman days. So much talent packed into three musicians.
Hey yo. This song rocks. Everybody listen. And learn this is music to hear and learn that music is grand! Love it!
I saw the trio twice in Hawaii in 1978 and then again in 1979. Can't get enough of them.
God i wish there was a good recording of this......Roger a true class act, Gene so sad your gone, chris always the Rock.
Everytime I discover something new on RUclips new or about Gene Clark it reminds me of what attracted me to it to begin with. I know what attracted my attention to the Byrds and my focus on Gene. Great songwriting and vocals. It's irresistable.
Agreed. Gene Clark is one of greatest songweites in those days
That's a cool stripped down version of the song. I think the studio recording has horns and strings and all that. It's cool to hear the 12-string filling in the gaps.
Chris Hillman's harmonies were usually overshadowed in the Byrds by Crosby, but this shows Chris' hi-harmony skills to good effect.
I think in the Byrds Chris mostly sang the low harmony, he was more or less expected to step it up and take Gene's position after he left the group, and Gene was a natural baritone. Crosby sang the high harmony, or Mcguinn depending on the song, usually Crosby though.

Listened to this album til I wore it out. What a trio! Wish they had stayed together longer
Thanks for posting this! I had never seen anything from this era before. It's Great!
True, Roger looks a bit frightened. Probably because he knows Gene's written yet another superior song, thus leading to even more guilt over his plan to exclude many great Clark compositions from the Byrds box set.
Roger was always jealous of Gene
@George Duffy ok didn't you write that months ago?
What? Roger is never afraid. He invented that jingle sound and he is the master of the 12 strings rickenbacker that gene can not play. His eyes are just that Looking at audience. I dont see FEAR but i hear hillman's string bass
Gene Clark was some musical genius ♥️
I wish they would have stayed together longer. Saw them twice in Hawaii. Once in 1978 and also in 1979. Both at univ of Hawaii. America opened for them in 1978.
Gene broughts lots of soul to the Byrds.
This song is from the first album by McGuinn, Clark & Hillman, which incidentally has that same name, released in 1979.
1 sad man don't Like This??? What a shame !!!
FANTASTIC
hey gary i n ever heard this its a great
song........babsie x
Looks like George Grantham....drummer for Poco on drums. I believe he played drums for them when they went to Australia!!!
I totally agree......
If I'm not mistaken, this is McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman
I am torn on this. I like when they were doing it on tour in Australia, but I prefer it without Roger singing along with Gene. It was also better when it was faster. I agree, a little faster sounds better.
Yeah, I love a lot of their duo stuff, but he doesn’t help here
Yeah, Gene and Roger aren't really together here, in voice or in spirit. Roger was probably pissed off about Gene drinking and drugging his way through the tour.
@@ronfowlermusic mcguin had his own issues. He acted like a cop
I couldnt agree more. I like it w Gene on lead vocals alone. Roger I reckon wanted some of the spot light on him too. Lyrics are kinda hokey to begin w but w Gene alone on vocals it makes that easy to overlook. Theres another video w just Gene singing
Gene is really hammered!!!!!
@TheMichaelJB

Somewhere around 1978 to 1979.
Gene Clark....AND The Byrds, right?
How in the world is this not THE BYRDS! Of course it is The Byrds.
@Tom57ish
No, George Grantham of Poco.
With 3 original members, there shld be more called THE BYRDS than MC Guinn Hillman And Clark, as there has been Byrds versions with only Mc Guinn or Clark as original member....
This rules
Where was this filmed/taped? what year?

It's not Mike Clarke on drums. He was playing with Firefall then, and he was blond and stockier than this drummer.
could someone send this to Coldplay's singer....
Noooo cant stand chris martin/coldplay
lovely and of course hillman continues on today
@rockon1898
yep.
played it well, too...
where is this from? Australian tour 1978?
To bad croz wasnt there.😢
@boonzo
LoL
you could be right though. the best writers in the Byrds were Crosby and Clark.
Im not aware crosby wrote anything
This song is good w just Gene singing. Roger and Chris detract from it w their added vocals. Guess they didnt want Gene to have all the spot light
And the drummer is not half bad good vocalist too. Poco's George Grantham.
George Grantham on drums?
Yes! A very good drummer and high harmony singer.
Yep George He is also a great singer
great musicians but poor song!
+Rolando Aponte I beg to differ. Great musicians great song.
How unfortunate for you.
Its a good song when its just Gene singing. Roger, not so good here
I don't know why you posted this as Gene Clark and not McGuinn, Hillman and Clark. You might think he was one of the best song writers but he is not anything special.

Who are you? Roger Mcguin? Lol
Gene wrote some really great stuff. His album No Other is one of my all time favorite albums
I did not say that I disliked him I just don't know why some people put him on a pedestal. He did not have anything special about him. The Byrds are one of my favorite bands.
