@@lisay3246 I have been in these groups and a bunch of moderators with little to no reptile experience are giving out lots of misinformation. I am not saying that you are not smart on the subject but the atmosphere of those pages is something I do not want to be a part of. I get my information from my own personal research, the hundreds of reptile books I own, and experienced reptile keepers I trust. The way those pages are run are it’s your way or no way which i do not agree with. I was honestly excited when I first saw these groups of turtle lovers on Facebook thinking it was going to be a positive experience but I disliked it so much I left every single group. I see that you may have good intentions but I just think you need to change the way those pages are run, you guys mute people’s opinions and advice if it doesn’t coincide with your own. That is a dictatorship not an educational community.

@@darshnarach8889 possibly, I’m in the UK so not very familiar with US constitution and legality of private individuals speech or barring that aforesaid speech.
It is really upsetting to see so many people gate-keeping information for power, how sad must your personal life be if you spend all your time ruling over a Facebook group with an iron fist like a dictator. Thank you for sharing this information, it’s so important to raise awareness for issues like this and problematic people in the community. I’m from Australia and I have a Murray River Short Neck Turtle who is about a year old named Stuart and I love watching your videos, they help me feel less overwhelmed with turtle keeping as someone who is very new to it.
I have a Zoology degree, law degree, masters degree in law, have kept turtles for 30 years. I have veterinary experience (2 years at local practice) and zoo experience (1 summer) and admin on 3 UK turtle groups.
On one of her groups, I advised an owner from SE Asia with little access to the recommended equipment, so advised equipment that they could access to help improve the turtles habitat. This despite not being ideal, would have improved its care and health.
I was banned for advising equipment that owner could get easily , would help turtle but not ideal and what they recommended.
She runs the group along the lines ‘My way, or the highway’.
No dissent or criticism allowed.
I’m so glad you’re saying something. I joined a bunch of pages when I decided to get back I to turtle owning and was promptly removed from this series of groups because in ONE of them I asked why water conditioners are toxic.

Loved this! I joined a leopard gecko group who sucked me in with their, "this is the only right way," BS. Learned my lesson to gather info from many sources only after I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on my gecko. I LOVE your videos and appreciate your info. My slider and painted turtles appreciate it too. 🙂
The strengths of your channel are the positive attitude and empirical advice. Stay with that. Regarding that group I was getting the same uncomfortable feelings about it, and then I saw your video. Truly scientific discussions allow for polite disagreement and discourse.

IM DEAD 😂 I joined all of her groups when I first came to the nature center as a part timer years ago and was tasked with bettering their diets…. I asked a legitimate question about why she suggested basic lettuces as a staple over greens with a great calcium to phosphorus ratio (because at that point most of my dietary knowledge was based on iguana diets) and I got absolutely attacked saying that I was being rude and disrespectful and I was like but its a legit question? and then I was banned from every group 🤣

Man. I was sharing Chris Leone video about raising hatchling box turtle in the water. People said I was killing turtle. Actually, to turtles. We human are all student, nobody knows the natural or absolute right way to raise them. We can only do what works. The species lives thousands years earlier than human, and we claim we had the knowledge of it? I left those Facebook group and I do support what you did. Thanks Dan.
So glad you covered this topic. I am a new No Amer Ornate Box turtle owner and searched online for care info. I found most FB feedback to be conflicting for the reasons you covered, which is why I found my way to your channel. Although I haven't seen you highlight ornates, the guidance you offer about nutrition, health, behavior and environment is great and relative to a degree. What I take away is exactly what you said,...that we are free to seek out as much info as possible and not get bent if someone disagrees with my turtles preferences 🐢. Best of luck to ya Dan. I follow because I like to see what questions people post so I can see if others go through the same issues I have and I like to see what other advice people give before they get banned 😝
Funny she forgets when she and one of her pigeons posted blatant lies about me and my Tortoise care simply because I walked away from her insanity.. and then banned for disagreeing 😂 Still have those screenshots of those public lies and plenty of witnesses about how many times she and the minion she uses did this without my knowledge. She’s a joke. An embarrassment to the community and real educators.

I've gotten blocked from a redfoot group by her for showing my outdoor enclosure, which is made of redwood. She said it would poison and kill my tortoises. I followed her comments with info on the aging of the material and the fact it would be healthy. She then told me it would not retain the necessary humidity for them and banned me. Let her try and sue you.... Jokes on her. She'll waste $$ trying to get a legal case together for "slander".lol

I was banned from a Chameleon group because someone posted about impaction an substrate I said I have a bioactive set up for my chameleon and there's never been a problem 4 people said I was abusing my chameleon an just asking for a world of problems... I mentioned what brand substrate I use and was banned for promoting false content... Basically I use the Bio Dudes substrate... I don't know I don't understand some of these know it alls... Ohh an FYI my chameleon is literally thriving in his bioactive enclosure for almost 2 years now...
There’s nothing wrong with caresheets as a starting point or baseline, but many turtle species evolved over millions of years to be specialists, and in the wild feed solely on one item. So you can even split the middle and do fine, but there’s no reason to ban people or sue people over a differing opinion or care techniques

I have created over 250 for my forum. When attaching the caresheets some explanation needs to be added. With that said it is impossible not to post the caresheets when the forum has 20,000+ members.
@@lisay3246but every single person who joins your forums would benefit from healthy debate. People questioning the way things are done is how new ideas, research and progress happens. So each time you delete a post, comment or ban a member because you dont like what they said, you are part of preventing progress.... consider how zoos kept animals 20+ years ago... Verses the progress to more natural environments that mimic their locality and fir their needs and welfare. Creating more natural behaviours.

I was in two of her groups before leaving voluntarily because I was sick of the info graphics as a response to every question a member would ask.
Groups are supposed to be conversational and about sharing info with other keepers (IMO), not just having the same effing slides rammed down your throat for everything.
Additionally, she lost a ton of credibility with me when I realized how many groups she runs. I mean, how can one person legitimately be an ‘expert’ on so many different species? They can’t.

I think I know the person you're referring to. I think her name is Noelle if I remember correctly. She made me a moderator on one site but then scolded me for not agreeing with her blanket generalization that pine wood is not safe for building turtle enclosures. I then left her group and haven't looked back.

I was scared when I couldn't get my turtles to eat veggies. I was like well where would they be getting these in the wild anyway. So I just buy plants and they eat those up along with their pellets.

I get it, it’s because most people will get little hatchling baby turtles, like red-eared sliders, for example, and have no idea how to take care of them because they’ve been misinformed, and either a.) the turtles die prematurely, or b.) the owners just dump them wherever when they get too big to take care of, that is a *huge* problem, that much is true.
I had my African sideneck Kobe going on four years, now. I actually got her from a PetSmart, and honestly I thought she was going to get much bigger than she is now, but so far every time I measured her lately she’s always been about four and a half inches, total, so she maybe grew about an inch or two since I got her.
Yes, turtles *can* be a lot of work to take care of compared to, say, snakes or lizards, every other reptile-specific channel here will tell you that. *However*, that doesn’t mean you have to jump on everybody’s throat just because they did *this one little thing wrong* compared to what actual care guides recommend you should do.
I might have done *this* wrong or *that* wrong with her, but so far she’s still active and kicking, and I think that’s the most important thing.
Love this we should always research everything even the news doesn't tell the 100% truth.
OMG Dan I LOVE this video man!!! I started laughing when you shared that one of your followers was banned from a Box turtle group for saying baby box turtles were semi aquatic because I was banned for the same thing from the “friendly box turtle group” by Rachael McGregor Pittman!!! I even shared a paper from an ecologist and she flagged me for sharing “dangerous misinformation” 😂 when I tried messaging her, she just banned me! When I tried messaging Noelia (another admin) she “tried” to get to the bottom of this but ended up ignoring me there after. These pages are out of control!! Something has to be done!!! Spread the word!! It’s not bashing it’s exposing their dangerous and unjust behavior!!
The thing that gripes me is that one turtle group I joined on Facebook for Painted Turtles tells everyone they can’t use water conditioner because it will kill their turtle or make them sick. So people with 100 gallon tanks are supposed to have 50 buckets of water sitting out for days to get rid of the chlorine in their tap water. That is crazy. Who can do that? Sorry I haven’t had any issues with it. I don’t say anything in that group.
Use 5gallon buckets to save your floor space jk😂

I watch every video you put out, I'm new to the turtle scene but have taken care of turtles and tortoises for years as I managed a pet store, the carrot soaks had me LMAO because I think the only ones who would like those are my horses.😂😂😂
Oh oh, I made a second account and then went on to say that cohabing fish was fine with turtles and they also lost it, showing pictures of my catfish and turtles that have been living together for 10+ years and they told me it would never work.. but it's been 10+ years. BANNED.
She banned me for asking questions, I was in no way rude about it either. She blocked me from commenting when I was asking questions on why she says something is 100% not safe, but LOTS of others on RUclips and the other turtle group i’m in say otherwise. ( by the way I found a WAY better group on fbook ) Then after my 24 hr ban of not being able to comment she blocked me. So sad really the way she treats others and blocks for them just asking questions and trying to learn about turtles and turtle care if it’s not her way she gets offended. So I disagreed with a post she had and that’s how I got banned/blocked.
So she’s lying she banned/blocked me because I disagreed with her but as she said in those screenshots you posted I guess I “ deserved it “ lol 🙄

Inforce the posters! That was my duty when I was a moderator. My favorite is the "plastic" backing on cuttlefish bones. 😆🤣😂 95% of most cuttle bone is all natural. There are a small percentage of man made cuttlefish bone that has added ingredients thus having an artificial backing to contain the material. Cuttlefish bone does have a natural hard bone attached to the softer white pulp.

@DanTheTurtleMan I feel like joining those groups to cause chaos. No is going to tell me what to do. I take the advise and do my own research as well. They should be open to critique and making updated on their recommendations if needed. Just hate people that are like that.
On one hand, I'm sad you encountered these terrible people too, on the other hand god I'm glad I'm not the only one so people know how shit these people are. These same people told me that using a Mercury Vapor Bulb would kill my turtle. I did my research! I knew how to install it! They're safe!
I must have gotten lucky, I do allot of these things and haven't gotten banned, I got a post taken down, I posted asking for tips with a sick turtle (I know, bad idea) and they took it down before I could get help, thankfully I took her to a vet instead of listening to them, or else she'd be dead by now.

Got banned from a painted turtle group for 2 reasons. 1. Linking information from outside source. (Kenans video on flipped tortoises) 2. "Harassment"
Here's the story. A girl posted a picture of her painted turtle in her hand not even fully flipped over. (Cant remember why she made the post) Some very pleasant lady (to keep it respectful) started bashing her saying she was torturing her turtle by flipping it to take a picture of the plastron. I tried to explain that it was completely fine to flip a turt or tort for a short period of time and that sometimes its necessary for things such as veterinary procedures and routine examinations and collecting data for field research. Someone didn't like that too much, saying that anyone who does that is cruel and she would never put her turtles through that kind of stress. I finally got bored with the conversation and told the girl she did nothing wrong and linked kenans vid just to prove the point. Little while later the comments were deleted and I was told that I was harassing people and linking outside information. Then it was by by 👋. Pretty hilarious thinking about it now. 🤣
I stopped giving advice.on FB a long.time ago and even ain on one and got.reported to FB when I tried to explain that her reasoning for sexing it as a male was inaccurate. I work for 911 and people truly call police.for crap like that and I tell them to block and move on my PD have real issues to deal with

That profile is admin in multiple turtle groups and didnt notice until pointed out now I no longer subscribe to any of the offending groups because I agree they are definitely spreading misinformation

One of the many reasons I am glad I don't have FB. I have a good group of friends on Insta (you're one of them) that I hit up if I think I am I'm trouble. But as I grow more and more comfortable with my turtle skills and experience, I have needed to reach out less and less. I am sure that will change when I get my first eggs though...lol better go watch and wait for my turtles to die...I use Prime and Reptisafe regularly...

Did that lady run a blog at some point? One of the vet tech at my exotic pet clinic printed out a page about turtle care when I first came in with my RES. She told me that the female author is not to be trusted because there's a lot of things that are incorrect but she highlighted the only part that were factually correct which is basic temperature

I am still deadly afraid to out conditioner in my hatchlinf Reeves turtles water becauss im scared he'll die. Also scared to overfeed live food and to out more than half a tank of water.
Just do it. I use it and never had a problem. I have used it for years for fish and there are specific ones for turtles although they are probably all the same, just have different names on the bottles.
Reptisafe water conditioner is actually the recommend

I've been bullied by her since leaving her forum as a moderator 4 years ago to start my own turtle forum. She hunted me down with her cronies until I blocked them. That wasn't good enough so she found me on email and started bullying me until I blocked her on email. I still have all the emails! She's been using her forum as a podium to bully me, blocking members for mentioning my name that are on my forum, and bullying my Admins. In fact when I bring on new admins and moderators I ask them how serious they are about her forum because most likely they'll be blocked because they're now helping with the forum. Actually the Mods and Admins are part of the family on my forum

I’m glad you made this video, because I agree 100%. I’m a member of a musk turtle group since I received a hatchling eastern musk turtle and I made a post about diet and they all were commenting on how my little dude will fail to thrive due to him not eating enough greens in his diet. Eastern musk turtles are mainly carnivorous, especially since mine is a growing hatchling. If you have an opinion on myturtlestore could you make a video on them? Okay, so now I am freaking out just a bit. I received my first 3 toed box turtle a little over a month ago. Hatch date thought to be sometime around the October-November 2020 timeframe. The breeder told me they were being raised in shallow water. I was doing the same and I happen to ask a question about it's shell in one of those groups. I was told it was not recommended to have them in water (I inch or less) because of shell rot (just to soak once a day). So I stopped. Will it harm my baby? How old can they be raised in water?
If the humidity isn't high enough or you notice the growth on the shell isn't smooth or it's flaring upwards at the ends, then that isn't good and you may want to use a shallow water setup. If the growth is smooth implying proper humidity and whatnot, then you're just fine without water! The shallow water just ensures that there's enough humidity and hydration for the box turtle and leads to more smooth growth usually.

Fun fact the posters from the FB page were used in my local group in Malaysia, the admin translated it to our language. Everything's the same except for the nationalities in the group. I'm so confused now...
Tannins are safe, I feed Hikari with 0 issues and know many who do as well! Sorry for any confusion, this is why I wanted to make the video
@@noeliaperez5290 I strongly disagree. If garlic was toxic many companies would not use it and likely would already have a lawsuit on their hands. I know many people who feed Hikari to some of the rarest and most sensitive species of chelonian in the world and they thrive on it.

This person was in my group but when I searched their name they didnt show up. Another admin had to block them. How were they in my group and set it up to where I couldnt see them?
People join groups then immediately block administrators and moderators. Wonder why someone would go through all that trouble if they had innocent intentions?

Bruh this video is 2 years old and they are still giving out those misinformation. I’m still new to terrapins but at least have kept some for a few months now. Not a single one of them needs lettuce 😂 yes they do munch on some plants for fun but come on.. they even remove my comments cause they don’t recommend crabs in the terp’s diet. Like, How come they eat lettuce more than crabs,etc in salt marshes 😭😂(I’ve left)
I think this person equates himself/herself to an internet celebrity and requires validation from the group members. Let me say this: there is only a small handful of people in the hobby who know/care anything about this person and his/her knowledge, and I am not one of them. I just like turtles and videos about them.

I really hope you are talking about Lisa Y. I have had so many tiffs over my comments on her fb groups.
I have been banned from at least 2 of her group's becouse i believe in and practice as close to natural life raising of my pet turtles as apposed to synthetic no enrichment lifestyle.

Lisa that is what i hopped in the beginning but not even close to the experience i had. I had comments shut off and removed when i spoke of impulse buying of turtles had them blocked over making statements about natural raising and have had many attacks on your sites if i make any statement that may appose anything that is in your posters. It has turned into a bash site where people are bullied and pushed to do or change things. Like it or not that is exactly my experience with your sites and im fairly sure i have left them all by now.
