I’d think the main thing that makes this game distinct isn’t that you have multiple players helping each other out rather than competing, but that it’s a campaign game with multiple books to go through.
He knows how to pronouce it He was just doing a joke for anyone who's read the books or seen the movies. Subtle Tom Vasel... harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Floo_powder
Have played this with my girfriend. Excellent, excellent, excellent introduction to deck-building! This will be great for families and Harry Potter fans.
9:49 Did anyone else just reflex into singing "Like rama lamma lamma ka dinga da dinga dong Remembered forever As shoobop sha wadda wadda yippity boom de boom Chang chang changitty chang shoobop That's the way it should be, whaooohhh, YEAH!!
Ugh, I'll always hate games that use photos movie photos, yeah I'm shallow like that, I care for looks in games, I would rather all those pictures were drawn.
Art is very subjective, but if you check out reviews the general consensus is that the art is inconsistent at best. This is a criticism of many of the legendary games. I think good art can be expensive, and when you have such a successful franchise with recognizable actors to pull from, it's an easy choice from a development standpoint.
Well, I am asking about your subjective opinion, the same way I gave mine when I said I don't like photos taken directly from movies. Specially because I'll be the first person to admit that the reasons I don't like photos is because for some reason I associate it with cheap cash ins. Games like Spartacus, didn't do a great work to change that.
I like the player boards, which several deckbuilders I own also have, but the organization aid that a board provides makes these kind of games more accessible. I especially like the currency tokens. I don't know how many games of Legendary or Apex where in the late stages I'm swamped trying to track combat and influence in massive combos. The coop part is really fun and you find in the later chapters of the game how to tag the best combos with each other's special abilities.
Man, that sci-fi themed shelf to the left of Tom's head is a thing of beauty. Cosmic, Terra Forming Mars, Cry Havoc, and RFTG all enjoying each others company.
I think this would been better if you played year for year instead. A specific deck for each year instead of mixing all the years. But I'll try it in future if I get the chance. Not a huge fan of the art from the movies, prefer art that are drawn.
It's really funny, the people calling out the use of photos instead of drawing when everyone was shouting about the opposite with Legendary Encounters: Firefly. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, eh?
Fair review from a non-HP fan. I've only played up through year 3, but I don't think the randomness is that drastically different from other deck builders. If nothing else, I appreciate that the Dark Arts cards are more dynamic than what the villains do in, say, Legendary. And like Forbidden Desert, you can do a little card counting so you know what's left to expect before it's reshuffled. Length is a bit of an issue, but it's still not too bad.
Wow...the quality of this video is so much better than previous videos. Very clear and high definition compared to other videos. Are they using a new camera or something? Great job guys and the quality!
As much as I hate screen caps (and I'm not really a potter fan), this game blew me away. Games 1-6 are basically a tutorial and (although playing through each one and watching the young wizards get stronger and grow up to be battle tested wizards is pretty cool) game 7 is where its at. It's tough and will give any seasoned gamer a run for their money. The fact that its fully co-op is a huge bonus too. For some reason other companies seem unable to make a fully co-operative deck builder. That is where deck builders shine; in their co-operation to take down the villains and beat the game. Who the hell cares about a final score? The components for this game are really well done too. My only gripe would be that the "book keeping" by game 6-7 ends up being a little much to keep track of, but its nothing compared to something like sentinels of the multiverse. I recommend this to anyone who likes deck builders. This is one of the best out there.
All that to say against it and it gets the seal of approval. Maybe I'm just too caught up on the comments about bad luck ruining everything, it's always something that grinds my gears to know there's nothing I could have done about something, even as a guy who likes Galaxy Trucker.
Seriously, I'd never expect USAOpoly to get help for a deckbuilder from Forrest-Pruzan, who tends to make pretty cruddy kids games. Granted, FPC also worked with USAOpoly to make Wonky which I found quite enjoyable for a card driven Dexterity game.
I guess it’s just a nitpick, but the “TM”s on every card after all of the Harry Potter terms (Quidditch, Dumbledore, Sorting Hat, etc.) is just awful. Really breaks the immersion. Is it really necessary?
What other games are similar to this one? This or gloomhaven JotL? (I’m a noob so maybe its apples and oranges?) Just want some suggestions. This one seem to be not as deep as gloom?
I just started playing this game last week and I’m OBSESSED. But I have some questions that aren’t clear in the rules. Do you reset your health at the beginning of each game? And when you’re stunned and it says to remove half the cards in your hand, does that mean get rid of half of your hogwarts deck cards? Or get rid of half of your 5 card hand?
It means getting rid of half of the cards in your hand at that moment. The only time when there will be a distinction between the Hogwarts deck cards and your starting cards is when an effect ask you to check your top card for its cost since you're starting cards have none.
@@philtess3126 thank you so much! We actually ended up figuring it out since we couldn’t stop playing 😂 but thank u so much for replying. This game is amazing we played it all the way through about 4 times.
@@KirbyBinks yea the concept is really addicting. I still wish there was more characters to play as or at least an upgrade to the base 10 card deck though. I also realized that most of the games are decided if you can get the petrificus spell, cards that take out death tokens or if you get crab and goyle as the first enemy. Otherwise, some games are meant to be loses. I also would have like something to rotate the cards in the shop (the worst is having all cards in the shop being 5 and up costs).
Not sure if I follow. Is the game designed to play books 1 through 7 in one sitting? Or is it more like Pandemic Legacy where you get the same group to play the game 7 (in this case) times? Or is it just "pick a book and play it"?
The books get harder as you go, so the game is designed to be played in sequence over a few sessions. However, the first few books aren't very hard, and it's easy enough to switch between books that you could pick and play at your leisure.
Second lukewarm review of a GenCon hotness game(the first being Seafall). I think what we can all gleam from this is...avoid the GenCon hype. What I am gathering is that there really is a 'feeding frenzy' mentality at GenCon based on perceived hotness that doesn't always end well. Caveat emptor.
To me this really seems like an intro to deck-building, which with the HP ip makes a lot of sense. Nothing too major so as to serve as a gateway, but not a total snore to gamers.
Maybe FFG spoiled me with their Star Wars games, but photo stills on the cards just looks terrible. The game may be good but it looks so cheap with the photos. Star Trek games commit the same sin.
My wife and I found that this game lacked meaningful decisions: the game mostly plays itself, and you do everything your cards tell you to do, every turn. Even drafting cards usually boiled down to taking the best card you could afford and avoiding junk. Bottom lone: cute but boring.
I like deck builders, and a co-op one sounds interesting, but I find Harry Potter pretty ho-hum and the characters don't mean squat to me, so this one's a pass.
Deck building is my favorite game playing but I am not a fan of Harry Potter. Did play other night at LGS and really enjoyed but would like suggestion for other really good deck building games and coop. Thanks
Tom Vasel is like our Sorting Hat for good board games. 20 points to Vaseldor!
I think he'd be a Vaselclaw actually. Seems to suit him more.
I would like drawings instead of actors' photos so much more...
Absolutely. What a pity!
Not me I love when they do the photos. I love flying frog productions especially for that reason. Everyone does drawings!
Find what you want, print it out, cut it to size, and glue it on.
I’d think the main thing that makes this game distinct isn’t that you have multiple players helping each other out rather than competing, but that it’s a campaign game with multiple books to go through.
Me: "It's not D A GON ALLEY! pfft..."
2 seconds later...
Tom: "I will pronounce things wrong and I don't care."
Me: .... you win I guess.

I would argue that Legendary: Firefly would have been better off with photos
Didn't play that one, bad art work?

I am with you. Original art would have been wayyyyyyyyyyyy cooler!
I like the player boards, which several deckbuilders I own also have, but the organization aid that a board provides makes these kind of games more accessible. I especially like the currency tokens. "I'm not a harry potter phonetic. so there is a good chance I'l pronounce some harry potter stuff wrong." Bizness as usual. :)
I saw what you did there...
It's really funny, the people calling out the use of photos instead of drawing when everyone was shouting about the opposite with Legendary Encounters: Firefly. Damned if you do, damned if you don't, eh?
Bad artwork is a negative. But if you asked the people hating on Firefly if they would rather photos, the vast majority would say no.
I don't know about that. I'd take photos any day of the week over that God-awful art.

Got it in the mail today! Can't wait for my BGG (Board Game Group) to get to this one! Loved the Lego HP Board Game!

i liked the bit in the movie when luke beat darth vader
10:13 I don't 'Glifoly!' is a real spell

Personally, love the epic feeling length of the game as you go through the books. But I'm a bit of a fanatic so take that with a grain of salt.
New camera? This video is super clear. Love it.
I know this is speculation, but which would be better, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle or Harry Potter: Legendary (like Marvel Legendary)?
harry potter legendary. ..which they will never make so you're stuck
"I am not a Harry Potter phonetic, so I might pronounce some things wrong." :D Clever!
If you look at Hemione.... she has a cat... LOL
She shouldn't have it before the third box though. ;)
I guess it’s just a nitpick, but the “TM”s on every card after all of the Harry Potter terms (Quidditch, Dumbledore, Sorting Hat, etc.) is just awful. Really breaks the immersion. Is it really necessary?
Yeah, that sucks but it must be a legal requirement (tho it still sucks).
What other games are similar to this one?
This or gloomhaven JotL? (I’m a noob so maybe its apples and oranges?)
Just want some suggestions. This one seem to be not as deep as gloom?
Looks like a neat family game... The art though... looks very very meh
"Liftus Boxus!"
Agreed about the dislike of photos vs drawings. Just comes off as cheap and unpolished.

And yeah, nothing carries from game to game, including your health. The game can already be a bitch at times, you need the full health lol

"I am not a Harry Potter phonetic"
Ok...that has to have been on purpose!
How is it with 2 players? I'd love to play with my wife but if its a crappy 2 player conversion I don't want to waste wife-game-capital on it.
My wife and I play it all the time and it works wonderfully as a two-player game.
Not sure if I follow. Is the game designed to play books 1 through 7 in one sitting? Or is it more like Pandemic Legacy where you get the same group to play the game 7 (in this case) times? Or is it just "pick a book and play it"?

The spells are all Latin or Latin adjacent. 😉
Mine had many severely bent and damaged cards. I am not the only one.
you could cosplay as the 4th doctor with that hat

looks fun. i really want to get this one.
Is the cooperative or competitive better?
I've played both, but I think I would prefer the cooperative game.
Thanks!
Shuttus the Doorus!
I really liked the game, but the art work or lack of is tough on the eyes!
Can you play as a villain?
unfortunately, no
Just started playing today. Game is super fun! Currently on game 2

"You don't have to play Voldemort" you make it sound like that's a good thing.
Memoir 44 players: Hold my beer
Harry Potter: check.
Invites a good comparison to Ascension: check.
Co-op: check.
Shut up and take my money.
Unsubbed for helping Slytherin.
Just kidding.
"Dee-a-gone" alley 😆
It's "die-a-gon" like diagonal ....because it's a diagonal alley.
Maybe FFG spoiled me with their Star Wars games, but photo stills on the cards just looks terrible.
The game may be good but it looks so cheap with the photos.
Star Trek games commit the same sin.
be hilarious if box 4 introduced perma-death
Soooo basically this is a co-op star Realms
Using Photos also reminds the players that the game is based more after the mediocre movies instead of the fantastic novels.
My wife and I found that this game lacked meaningful decisions: the game mostly plays itself, and you do everything your cards tell you to do, every turn. Even drafting cards usually boiled down to taking the best card you could afford and avoiding junk. Bottom lone: cute but boring.
Reminds me of Arkham Horror the card game and a little of Dominion.
XD Dice
just bring back the harry potter tcg already
looks how bad those cards are curling
Liftus Boxus 🤣💀
Description of this video :)
like harry potter but dont like deck builders. shame :/
Thanks
You take pride in mispronouncing Harry Potter things?
A little
This is a LEGACY??
No!
They really should have stayed with the books storyline and not the Movies, Those movies were the worst thing to happen to Harry Potter.
Apart from the photos, how they did they stray from the books storyline in this game?
legendary ripoff. Not that it's legendary, I mean its a ripoff of the marvel card game legendary
Ugh these "board games" that are just cards. bleh
still waiting for a good harry potter game.. this is not one of them
You contradict yourself so much. “It’s a good game but it sucks” that’s what I got from this video
