even though I'm not a huge gravel aficionado, Conor doing Unbound and Alex and Chloe doing Big Sugar really stood out to me, plus Ollie's Tour Des Stations.
On the idea of getting together and making a difference to improve conditions for cyclist, we had a major issue in my area recently. There is a very popular lake road that runs through a park; cyclist have used this road for decades. Earlier this year, with no warning, the park announced that cyclist would be banned form a roughly 1.5 mile stretch of the road that serves as a major connector to points outside of the city due to documented incidents with cyclists. Long story short, the local cycling community - racers, clubs, commuters, etc. - banded together, worked with the park and local officials to come up with a plan to keep it open. Part of it was educating local cyclists on the "rules" of the park that weren't posted (and getting them posted), part of it was just having conversations. The road remains - and will remain - open.
Due to the ridiculous cost I have no interest in buying a new bike for a good few years im still keeping my LOOK 765 RS rim brake and enjoying my 8th year on it.
I hope the people who got sacked after the closing of the app and GCN+ will find employment soon. And that 2024 will bring no more tragic deaths in the peloton.
Hi guys I’ve got to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you for your channel. Stumbled across by accident and became addicted to the content. After 40 years out of the saddle I bought a bike, lost a stone in weight and put myself in a great place mentally. Live in the New Forest and now discovering every inch of it. Thank you all of you and really looking forward at 62 for more improvements and discoveries into 2024. Happy New Year to all of you and just keep doing what you are doing. All the best Clay
I love road, born and bread for all out speed on tarmac, but I see the likes of gravel, and even cyclocross expanding, and more one day road events becoming more exciting to watch. Love watching the TdF every year, but cycling is at a tipping point of participation at a grass roots level and viewership over other disciplines. I think the world championships this year also spurred this growth on.
Scary fact I’ve been cycling longer than all of you as I started racing in 1987. Cycling has been a big part of my life since the early 70’s and still is. 2023 was a cycling low point for me as my attention started to drift away from riding my bike, any prior year since I started cycling . But GCN is wholly responsible for reinvigorating my interest in cycling again as I’m looking forward to the 2024 season and feel the butterflies in my stomach again. Thank you for stoking the embers of my waning love of cycling with your genuine enthusiasm and passion for the sport. I look forward to your inevitable return…many thanks for now! 😊
Scary fact: I've been riding even longer than you. My first century, a Super Century, 200 km or 24% longer than the standard 100 miles, was in 1965. Tom Ritchey was there and rode with me, getting me through the last 30 miles ir so..
Say good buy to a Gravel Race below $50-$75.00 ... Cross and Gravel will become less packed as the price continues to rise. Us common people will do less and less due to the cost. I'm already looking at just 1 or 2 local Gravel events instead of more. Neds Gravel has been a grass roots ride and now $$$$ and rising. Progress .................?
30 in 30? Back in September, I did my own version of 30 in 30. That meant 30 minutes of running AND 30 km of cycling in 30 days. I completed it successfully and I really felt my fitness level increase. After I survive Rapha 500 challenge in December, I'll do MY version of 30 in 30 in January :)
2023 was the year that I went from “No way would you get me in a bike”, to cycling over 700 miles and climbing over 26,000 feet on Zwift in three months. Can’t wait for nice weather so I can get outside
Richmond Area Bicycle Association, home of 2015 World Championships, raised funds and assembled 560 bikes and helmets for local children in 2023. 500+ bikes for many years.
video idea: calories burned/comparing: ascending, on the flat, descending, combo with grinding, spinning and riding at a coasting speed. >>> what burns the most calories---spinning or grinding? Good for January 2024 when we want to know what we are burning off after eating a lot at christmas!
Hi Guys, happy new year. Never mind june, I'm still on 30 in 30 now, including a 76 minute ride christmas day! I hope all you GCN presenters will set a good example for us mere followers and all do your 30 in 30 for 2024. Have a good one everyone.
Prominence of gravel vs road really depends on where you live. Near me, there are plenty of non-competitive road events, but there are plenty of gravel races that work something like park runs with only a few really entering to win and most happy to have a timed event to measure themselves
I once missed the date for signing up to a sportive, so I asked on a forum if people thought it was bad form to just do the ride without paying. Afterall it's just a ride on a public road. I didn't suggest I would use the facilities, but despite that, I got absolutely roasted.
So after two many years away from the hobby I returned....... A year and a half on an Ebike. Then dipped my toes back in the water of road with an entry level Trek Domane Al2 Claris groupset, mechanical brakes alloy wheels. Quickly added a redshift stem and seat post for comfort. After a few months decided with the release of the 105 12 speed mechanical to upgrade the wheels, tyres and groupset and aero drops Almost finished it now making the most of Xmass day. Will soon see if spending more really does improve my experience on the bike... Speed+Comfort
I got a Domane AL3 this year, and it’s a very comfortable bike. I put on my favorite saddle and pedals, and I haven’t yet found a need to upgrade anything on the bike. When the time comes, I’ll probably go with 105 mechanical just to get hydraulic brakes.
@@TheMachoGabacho My first 100mile ride included a very steep descent and very long descent and I was pulling so hard on the brakes. After years of working outdoors my hands are not as strong as I'd like them to be. Hence my desire for hydraulic as the strength needed is less. Also going into winter I bought a Zwift with the electronic 12 speed. Really noticed the benefit of 12 speed over Shimano 8 as I found it easier to get a good cadence with less difference between cogs.
@robertdrappo802 I've had an AL3 for 5yrs, only upgraded tires (BIG difference) and clipless pedals, plus wax the chain for efficiency gains. But by far the biggest improvement comes from improving the rider on the bike by training!! Looking at new wheels for this year as the next step. Carbon frame bikes have been overpriced for last 3 yrs
@@adamolig3865 I agree completely.... I've almost finished the upgrades today. Just a few more small bits to tidy up then will see what it's like.. What I will say is now I've completely had the bike apart and put back together I have a much better understanding and confidence regarding maintenance going forward.
Hancocks Bikes For Kids, in Charlotte, NC, donated 801 bicycles to local children this year. It began 30 years ago and is named after John Hancock, a local radio personality on 1110 WBT. It has grown exponentially throughout the years. Great show! Happy New Year!
I would never pay even one red cent to participate in a gravel event'. There is cx, road, and mtb. A bike race on dirt roads is still a road race, figure it out. The insurance underwriters call the shots currently. Favorite moment is, obviously, La Vuelta. Go Bills!
My Park Tool toilet roll holder has front forks. Much cooler and easier to align. And if someone puts the roll in the "wrong" way round, I can just spin it round to be right!
I think people are crazy for counting out Roglic for the 24 TDF. He’s coming off the best season of his career and is looking super strong. He and Jonas were neck and neck at the Vuelta.
I have still not found the massive clearance price drops you mentioned. Here and there 10% off the suggested retail price of a 2022 model and that‘s it.
@@zachrichardson7099 I‘m more after a gravel bike. Maybe Giant was a bit off my radar. The local dealer is in a town that was hard to reach because of roadwork until recently. I will check what they have.
The GCN Show is always a perennial Hack in my books. Congratulations to the GCN team on a stellar 2023 and I'm looking forward to an even better 2024! (Now, about that race coverage for Canada....)
Lloyd, just shake off those injuries. I broke both shoulder blades in a bike accident in 2022 and got back to the bike. Then I broke a vertebra (not bike related) in September 2023, and I am already back on the trainer!
Thanks for a great year gcn, but will we see a world of cycling style show on RUclips or a podcast maybe? And whats happening with the gcn plus documentaries
It's always a pleasure to watch the GCN Show, and Dan and Si are a class act, up there with Morecambe and Wise. By the way, the Canadian winter ain't what it used to be; it's PLUS 5 deg C in Ottawa this afternoon, and we've had a rare green Xmas. And, as sure as Hell, I'm not complaining, eh.

The problem with dev cycling infra in the UK in 2024 is that the local authorities have had a significant cut to their income and have to pay more for the things that they have to deliver anyway. So if local highways have been repaired recently then that is something, otherwise the funding and the delivery of infrastructure is going to have to be creative - it could have been the GCN Bristol Corridor!!??
The loo roll holder could do with being mounted the other way up to make it easier to change rolls. Looks like a Campag q/r, I believe Father Christmas uses Campagnolo...
Is anyone sad that, in the US, we now have to pay for not only a Max subscription at minimum $9.99 per month but also the B/R sports add-on for another $9.99 per month just to watch cycling which GCN+ so excellently and creatively brought us before being shut down? (Currently, the B/R add-on is free "for a limited time." I doubt it will be free in February of 2024)
Hope for more coverage of some ultra distance racing by GCN, especially that UK is a booming place for those, the Pan Celtic Race, Trans Alba Race, Badger Divide, GBDURO, or even a more elaborate piece about the culture of audaxing?
thanks guys, was hoping you would put a boxing day video up, yeah i have converted from pro road to gravel, i dont know what it is with going from road to gravel, i have met so many ex pro's in the gravel scene, exspecially 40+ age group, maybe cuase race conditions are more relaxed than pro racing, so more fun, yes you gotta send conner bk out there or olli & hank or all 3 to outbound,

Happy New Year to all the GCN folks, and the worldwide audience members. Some pretty exciting races this year again and we are looking forward to what is coming up. Not sure what will happen with the Classics if Pogi and Wout are concentrating on other things--total MvdP dominance for the cobbles and MSR? In terms of the industry, I continue to be astonished at how many boutique producers of very expensive kit are out there. Really, how big is the market for $300 jerseys? Some of those companies (and there has to be at least a dozen of them) surely can't keep going forever. Oh, and GCN+ RIP--we loved you!
I did the 30-in-30 last year and kept it up through May, when I injured my foot on a 4-hour snowshoe and had to be off my feet for several days. It was a great motivator and taught me how to do proper recovery rides when I had to put in those 30 minutes no matter what. Hoping for 30 in 366 for leap year 2024!
What I see: One or more bicycle manufacturers go under. Chinese manufacturers will enter the market with world-class products. Shimano gets bailed out after a series of lawsuits bankrupts them.
Thanks for everything GCN team. Loved your content for years, before GCN+ and I am sure younwill continue to entertain. GCN+ was an amazing, amazing thing. I hope we will see more cool things in 2024.
I'm sure you can still find a way to get audience votes on hack/bodge in the future e.g. sharing submissions via RUclips or Instagram posts and asking people to react/comment accordingly. Segment won't quite be the same without the audience percentages sometimes surprising the presenters.
Granted things have been tough to keep up with since the demise of the app (RIP, you guys knocked that one out of the park), but have I missed the annual hot/not kit show this year? Did it not actually happen? I'm rudderless in the world of profesional cycling since about mid-December :(
Thanks mates for a great 2023. My favourite cycling moment for 2023 was a full 5 months recovery from 800 metre daily climbs in Girona on a 9 day cycling vacation at age 77.
Gravel is / was an event by the people for the people, until UCI got involved. Now it’s a regulated less cool event. Money interests do it again. It’s becoming like CX when it’s very exciting before the big 3 turn up. Don’t get me wrong I like to see MVDP, WVA and TP but am equally impressed with the regular World Cup riders when there is close competition.
Could we not see a 2024 resurrection of a NEW GCN app with all the usual great content (minus the live racing)? Surely such a great little platform should not be left to languish, particularly when there are so many of the GCN films etc being missed by the faithful. I for one would be happy to pay a modest subscription fee to help support it. It would also mean the hack and bodge uploads etc could all still be in one place... Am I being too optimisitic, or just suffering from too many Christmas "shandys" I love my racing, but think the app could stand on its own without it....
Maybe Conor should go back and finish Unbound next year. It sounds like GMBN's Rich Payne. Is going back to the States to finish the 24 hour xc race. That nearly killed him. As was carted off to hospital in an ambulance.
You two are the best, thanks for all your hard work in 2023. But olly is my favourite, he has a heart of a lion. Happy new year from David in Northern Thailand.
I would love more GCN coverage of the Lifetime Grand Prix in the US the best gravel & MTB races of the year it’s the only thing I care about European cycling is dead to me
A lot of us are bloody tired of "game-changing innovations" that UCI approves, pros use, and makers are forced to push at consumers. We want bikes that have been through reasonable QA and can be spec'd as we want. Such bikes would sell like bug spray in the jungle.
@Dan turn this "consideration" into an action plan. You have access to all the top-shelf cycling gear, indoor training gear included, so toss the excuses out the window and get 'er DONE!!
At the highest level of the sport, nobody is buying their own bikes. At the mid and lower levels, nobody needs the highest end bikes anyway. Any World Tour pro could show up at any of my local races with my $500 steel road bike and destroy everyone. Don't let the industry dictate what and how you ride.
What were your favourite cycling moments of 2023?🔥🗓️
My favourite moments were watching all the GCN+ presenters on my app whenever I wanted with top racing, great commentary and plenty of other stuff. 😢

I'll like to see the Documentaries again in 2024, please
#captioncompetition: Ummm errrr uh Dan has the best sweater and is my second favorite presenter.
I'm sure you can still find a way to get audience votes on hack/bodge in the future e.g. sharing submissions via RUclips or Instagram posts and asking people to react/comment accordingly.
Segment won't quite be the same without the audience percentages sometimes surprising the presenters.
Always good to see you two- Happy Boxing Day.
Fyi- you mention Sepp Kuss in the opening but show us Remco in Red. 🤔
I am pretty sure that was Remco winning at La Vuelta when you were talking about Sepp Kuss in the intro 🤣
Granted things have been tough to keep up with since the demise of the app (RIP, you guys knocked that one out of the park), but have I missed the annual hot/not kit show this year? Did it not actually happen? I'm rudderless in the world of profesional cycling since about mid-December :(
Which Lloyd hurt their leg this time around?
Thanks mates for a great 2023. My favourite cycling moment for 2023 was a full 5 months recovery from 800 metre daily climbs in Girona on a 9 day cycling vacation at age 77.
Of course "corridor" is a French word - it means "corri of gold". 🙂
Because 2024 is a leap year, and the first Tuesday is 02 January and the last Tuesday is 31 December, there will be 53 GCN Shows in 2024!
Si.......use the horizontal drop outs with set screws and your all set.....they are awesome old school tech!@!
❤Great year of content, thank you GCN!
Dan Lloyd says the “story of the year is Sepp Kuss and his Vuelta win”…Evenepoel is shown in the red jersey. 😂
I paid £4250 for a Specialized expert rrp £7250. The savings are real!!
Nothing wrong with horizontal dropouts, especially if they have limit screws as you can see in the photo of the toilet paper holder
Down w/ hoz dropout H8er, how else can on convert a frame to a fixed drivetrain w/out a singleator abomination?
Great show as usual and a happy new year to all. Warner Brothers will not get a penny of my money until they bring back GCN+.
Love the TRIke 👌🏽
Are Si's arms really strong enough to counteract the gravitational on his ankles?
Maybe Conor should go back and finish Unbound next year. It sounds like GMBN's Rich Payne. Is going back to the States to finish the 24 hour xc race. That nearly killed him. As was carted off to hospital in an ambulance.
2024 i will be very keen to watch how Peter Sagan will be doing in mountain biking. Very interested to see his path to the Olympics
If he makes the Top 20 he'll have done well.......
Bike prices have reached absurd levels. Its time for a correction.
Will there not be a Christmas sweater this year and will the old one make af return? Would love to own one of those 🤩
So for 2024 is the shows new name Gravel Cycling Network ? Makes me wonder what next ? Pothole racing ? 😂
Does Morris Dancing count as exercise for the 30 in 30? That is normally the only exercise I get on a Thursday.
It looks like it can be pretty vigorous, so let's allow it!
Imagine yelling at cars "can you hear me" while they are blasting top 40 in their sealed metal box. The car-blind double standard strikes again
Happy New Year and thanks for everything! PS F*** the media landscape
I dont think Jonas will winn the Tour this year without Wout on his team
Sorry, but 70.3 is a triathlon. Definitely a bodge! 😁
I'm currently on day 3681 of 30! :-)
You two are the best, thanks for all your hard work in 2023.
But olly is my favourite, he has a heart of a lion.
Happy new year from David in Northern Thailand.
I would love more GCN coverage of the Lifetime Grand Prix in the US the best gravel & MTB races of the year it’s the only thing I care about European cycling is dead to me
Need a Dan Lloyd ftp test before and after 30 for 30
You showed Remco when you referred to Sepp.
The cycle trade is slowly pricing us out of the sport I feel the cycles have reached a plato in tech
